Chapter 22: End of Term
“What’s wrong with her?” Madam Pomfrey hurried over to Lily as we burst through the doors. Carisma and I were too exhausted to talk after lugging Lily up three flights of stairs. Its times like these that I hate the fact that Hogwarts is so massive. Carisma and I ended up gesturing wildly as Madam Pomfrey tried hard to decipher what we were trying to say.
“Come on, let’s just bring her to bed first,” Madam Pomfrey sighed as we placed a very pallid Lily on to the bed.
“Is she okay?” Someone shouted as the doors flew open. James Potter came rushing to Lily’s side. Carisma and I retreated slightly, exchanging glances as we gaped at James who examined Lily worriedly.
My eyes stung badly and my throat felt hoarse and dry. I was parched and my head was throbbing agonizingly. I got up unsteadily and leaned against the headboard. It was dark outside, the moon shone brightly against the velvety black sky. I felt unbelievably weak and drained as I licked my lips. I turned around, surprised to see someone napping in the visitor’s chair, looking extremely uncomfortable.
“Hello?” I croaked, still unable to speak properly. My eyes widened in shock when I saw who it was, “Potter?”
James yawned and ruffled his hair automatically, “Lily? Are you feeling better?”
“What are you doing here?” I gawked at him, still in shock. I would have expected either Carisma or Jen, but never…Potter, “Where’s Carisma and Jen?”
“I sent them back after they began nodding off to sleep during the middle of the night,” James got up and stretched.
“I see,” I nodded and winced. I can’t believe this. Even a simple nod made the headache a thousand times worst.
“How are you feeling, Ms. Evans?” asked Madam Pomfrey as she approached us.
“Not too good,” I replied honestly.
Madam Pomfrey shook her head, “Oh dear…hopefully, this will make you head feel better…we can’t have you missing your first exam tomorrow morning,” Madam Pomfrey clicked her tongue disapprovingly.
Instinctively, I spat out the medicine she had just spooned in to my mouth, “What? It’s tomorrow?” I couldn’t believe that I had completely forgotten about my exams. Well, how could I possibly remember when the sound of what seemed like ten thousand jackhammers resonated in my head.
“Lily?” Carisma and Jen appeared at the foot of my bed.
“How are you?” Carisma smiled sympathetically.
“Not too good,” I breathed as I forced a smile, “But now I feel worst, I forgot that we had exams tomorrow!” I moaned.
“You, Lily Evans, not remembering an exam? This is absolutely unheard of!” Carisma cried out exaggeratedly as Jen laughed.
“Stop it, Carisma,” Jen smiled, “Don’t listen to her, here, I brought over some books so you could at least study a bit,” Jen lifted the pile of heavy textbooks in to my arms.
“Thanks,” I beamed.
“What are you doing?” James stood up suddenly, making Carisma and Jen jump.
“Studying…” I trailed off.
“How? You’re sick! You’re supposed to be resting!” James cried incredulously as he made a grab of the books. I tried to keep it out of his reach but I just didn’t have the strength to. In the end, I ended up surrendering as I handed over the books.
“I’m going to sleep…” I yawned as James carefully covered me with my blanket. I didn’t even have enough energy to tell him off.
“Effects of the medicine…she’ll be fine, I suggest you lot get back to your common room and begin studying,” Madam Pomfrey insisted, “I will take good care of her, Mr. Potter,” Madam Pomfrey added after receiving an apprehensive look from James.
“Do you think she’ll make it?” I looked up from my book. I was doing some last minute studying in the morning as I waited for Carisma.
“I don’t know, she probably will, Lily never misses an exam, she could break all her limbs and still force herself to take the exam,” Carisma shook her head as I pursed my lips.
“That’s true though,”
I twirled my quill nervously between my fingers and began fidgeting with the hem of my skirt. Where was Lily? She’s going to be late! The exam is starting in five minutes. I glanced over at Carisma, who was staring at the entrance tensely. Professor McGonagall stood up and began reading out the instructions.
“Sorry, Professor!” Lily hurried in, panting slightly. Her face was pasty and sallow; her usually vivacious green eyes were now dull as she sped to her seat. Carisma and I let out a huge sigh of relief as Lily weakly beamed at us.
“QUILLS DOWN!” In less than a second, all the test papers had been levitated straight to Professor McGonagall’s desk.
“How’d you think you did?” Carisma asked as we pushed through the throng of students to leave the classroom.
“Horrible,” I replied.
“I don’t know, I probably failed it, I couldn’t concentrate on anything,” Lily said feebly.
“Lily? Are you sure you’re all right?” I scrutinized her carefully.
“I just…need to sleep,”
“Here, let’s bring her up to the dormitory, “ Carisma and I heaved Lily towards the Gryffindor common room.
As Lily slept peacefully in her bed, Carisma and I crept outside where students were all sprawled outside enjoying a few moments of freedom before going back in for their next exam.
“Jen!” Someone wrapped their arms around me and twirled me around. I squealed in fright, thinking that I would fly out of their arms. I didn’t.
Sirius let me down, grinning maniacally. I raised an eyebrow, “What’s wrong? Why are you smiling…like that?”
Sirius pouted, “I thought you’d be happy to see me,”
I laughed, “I am, I am, I’m sorry, I’m a bit stressed at the moment…”
“Worried about the exams?” asked Sirius as he played with my necklace.
I nodded, “Aren’t you?”
“No,” Sirius leaned back, looking haughtily delicious.
I rolled my eyes, “Are you always this sure of yourself?”
“Yep,” Sirius leaned in and kissed me before lacing his fingers through mine, “Let’s go,”
“Coming, Carisma?” Carisma looked up abruptly. She had been deep in thought, “Yeah,”
“Good morning!” Carisma sang out happily as she flung open the curtains.
“What are you so happy about?” I propped myself up on my pillow.
“Results come out today and we leave next week!” Carisma squealed cheerfully.
“OH MY GOD!” A shrill scream exploded from the corner of the room.
Fachitna was peering over her bed timidly, “A spider…” She stuttered.
Carisma rolled her eyes, “Fachitna, you call yourself a witch? Either kill it, levitate it out the window or leave it alone!”
Fachitna narrowed her eyes and glowered at Carisma who shot back a look as deadly as the one Fachitna had sent out. Time to play the mediator as Lily was out cold, “Okay…let’s get along now shall we?”
Fachitna got out of her bed and wrinkled her nose at me, “Don’t you try to play the part of ‘the perfect angel who can get anyone and anything she wants’! It’s disgusting, just to let you know, watching you flaunt off your relationship with Sirius. Trust me, darling, all of us know that in approximately two weeks, he’ll be single again, ready for his next…”
Fachitna never got to finish her sentence as I instinctively hexed her without thinking.
“JEN!” Carisma gasped as she clasped her hands over her mouth. I had somehow transfigured Fachitna in to a wild boar.
“WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?” Odyssa and Lorelei shrieked in alarm as they hugged each other and pressed themselves against the wall, unwilling to get any closer to the hideous snorting animal.
“What is going on?” Lily got up and looked over at us, her eyes widened immediately as her gaze dropped on to the boar, “Who did that?”
Carisma pointed to me as I shrugged innocently, “She wasn’t being very nice…I had to teach her a lesson,”
“Ooh…I’m going to kill Black for this,” Lily muttered furiously as she fumbled around for her wand. In less than a second, Fachitna had been transformed back to normal.
“You…just watch your back,” Fachitna threatened.
Carisma snorted, “I’d watch yours if I were you, Fachitna,”
During breakfast, Carisma ‘accidentally’ blurted out the whole wild boar incident making sure her piercing voice got around to all corners of the Great Hall. By the end of the story, snickers could be heard from all four tables, the most were from the Slytherin, who were just delighted to see a Gryffindor in such despair.
“Black, I hold you responsible for this,” Lily motioned.
“What? Why me?” Sirius held up his hands innocently.
“Your evil and immoral influence has apparently rubbed off on Jen,” Lily shook her head.
“YES! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!” Sirius punched his fist in to the air before retreating as Lily shot him a lethal look, “I was just kidding! I was just kidding!”
“Did you really do that?” Sirius whispered in my air when everybody else was deep in conversation.
I nodded sheepishly, “I didn’t mean to, she was talking about us and about---”
Sirius wrapped his arms around me and gave me a sizzling kiss in front of everybody, shocking me, “I am so proud of you,” I burst out laughing.
Later that day, we received our exam results. I had surprisingly done pretty well on the exams, receiving a variety of O’s and E’s on various subjects except for two A’s.
Lily had gotten special permission to sit Professor McGonagall’s exam again as she had been incredibly ill that day. Lily’s special permission had riled up a couple of students who had failed their exams.
“Are you glad to be leaving?” I queried as I threw my books and clothes in to my trunk.
“Of course,” James grinned, “What’s wrong? You don’t have to go back to your mother’s house now, you’re coming with me!”
“I guess I just didn’t realize how much I was going to miss her…” I sighed as I slammed the cover of my trunk down and locked it.
James nodded, “I know how you feel…”
“How’s it coming with Lily, anyways? Any improvements?”
“No…but at least she hasn’t yelled at me once in three weeks,” James piped up delightedly.
“Wow…major improvement,” I smirked as James glared at me.
“Come on, let’s go! We’re going to be late for the train,” James and I looked back the empty dormitory for one last time, realizing that the next time we return would be the last time as well.
As the train came to a halt and the whistles blew. Sirius gazed at me miserably, “I’ll miss you,”
“I’ll miss you too…thank you for the best year ever,” I beamed as we shared a tender and affectionate kiss.
Hand in hand, we walked out on to the platform. Lily, Carisma and I hugged each other goodbye before leaving. I strolled over to Sirius who was waiting patiently on the side, “I love you…” I smiled, feeling unnaturally elated that I finally had someone to say it to.
“Me too,” Sirius grinned as he embraced me snugly.
I turned around to see Pegasus waiting for me, he wore an horrid expression of annoyance as he looked at us in disgust.
“I have to go,” I mumbled as I tore away from Sirius and hurried towards Pegasus, who was staring daggers at Sirius.
As I sat in the car on the way back home, I looked out my window and a smile appeared on my face. This has definitely been the greatest year of my life…
