Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters. If I did It would be and absolute miracle. And I do not own the song or any part of it. One of my friends may say that I sing like her. (Thanks Tay!) But, I do not own any of her songs. :(
Miss Independent
It was Petunia’s wedding day. It was being held at Vernon’s home. Her mother and soon to be mother-in-law were bustling around her as she got ready in Vernon’s parents room. Her maid of honor, Jane Fredrick, was busy getting the bridesmaids, and flower girls ready when her father knocked on the door. The Inflatable Gazebo in the backyard had tipped over in to all of the food; all women who would not be walking in with Petunia were needed in the kitchen and backyard. They both left. Finally left alone, she studied herself in the mirror. Then she thought of what she would think of herself is she could see her self 2 years ago.
Miss independent
Miss self-sufficient
Miss keep your distance
Miss unafraid
Miss out of my way
Miss don't let a man interfere, no
2 years ago she had been 17. Foolish, straight out of high school. For almost a year and a half before that she had been anti-boy. Before that she had had a crush on the best friend of the boy Lily liked. Then while shopping for her 7th year in that silly wizard shopping center, Dragon Avenue or something like that she had met Sirius Black. The one that was always mentioned with Lily’s crush, James Potter, in her diary numerous times. The two boys had accompanied them on the trip and Petunia, naively, thought that Sirius had been flirting with her. But Lily’s diary entry that night told her otherwise.
Dear Diary,
Petunia can be such a pest! Today in Diagon Alley guess who showed up? None other than James and Sirius. They wanted to accompany us on the trip. I told them they were welcome but made it look like it was just because mum told me to. Inside however, I felt like screaming with joy! Finally James and I talking! Sirius would have gone off and left us alone but Petunia either had to stay with me or go back with mum. She stayed with me and requested that Sirius stay ‘to keep her entertained while Lily made goo-goo eyes at James.’ Gracious! You’d think she was 6 and not 15! I’m didn’t say that. I’m quoting Sirius. Petunia though that I went with her to the loo, but really I went back and apologized for her. James said that it was alright but Sirius snorted and said the above quote. Maybe I can get him alone at Hogwarts. (James not Sirius)
Ever since that day she had been totally against any chance of a relationship.
Miss on her own
Miss almost grown
Miss never let a man help her off her throne
So, by keeping her heart protected
She'll never, ever feel rejected
Little miss apprehensive
Said ooh, she fell in love
She started going to college in London. She kept to the books, and in her free time thought up ways to be totally evil to people that she hated. Most of the were witches or wizards Lily talked about. Or Lily herself.
When she arrived she was a dream beauty queen and a prize for any man on campus. But they all were soon rejected. Barely any of them gave up though. One of those was Vernon Dursley.
When her parents came to see how she was getting along, and one of her friends told them that she hadn’t had a single date the entire year. They then set her up and told her that they were going to meet her at a Chinese Restraunt but it wasn’t them who met her at the door. It was Vernon. He enhanced her with his charm and the way he acted. Straight and to the point.
One month later she finally admitted to herself that all boys weren’t like Sirius Black. Vernon was the one for her.
What is this feeling taking over?
Thinking no one could open the door
Surprise, it's time, to feel what's real
What happened to miss independent's no longer need to be defensive?
Goodbye, old you, when love, is true (when love, is true)
Vernon immediately became the luckiest man on campus. Petunia loved it. Seeing the other boys stare with intense dislike at Vernon as he walked to or from her in the study room, the local coffee shop or just around campus, was wonderful. Just because he’s dating me. She often thought with relish.
But she could also feel her freedom slowly dripping away. Her grades began to drop; she often stared at her phone, willing it to ring and for it to Vernon. And what hurt her the most had been that she and Jane no longer got together on Friday nights and watched movies together. (She also began to date one of Vernon’s best friends.)
It took some time for her to see
How beautiful love could truly be
No more talk of why can't that be me
I'm so glad I've finally seen
She had been ecstatic when Vernon proposed the nest year and began to plan the simple, small wedding at her home she had dreamed about since she was little. Then Vernon changed her mind. He wanted it at his home. She could have forced a compromise for a hall, but she quickly agreed. He wanted to invite a lot of people, so she agreed to share the happiest moment of her life with all of Vernon’s potential bosses. The only thing that matched her dream was that she was wearing her mothers dress. She had gone through a lot of grief just to achieve THAT!
Now she looked at her self in the mirror and thought. I’m so much happier now than I was 2 years ago. I am at peace with myself for being naive, and I’m extra glad for my being pretty. Instead of wishing it on some girl who wanted romance.
While she was day-dreaming the door opened and closed. Petunia turned, it was Lily.
“Lily, I’m glad you could come. Are you still going to be one of my bridesmaids?” She asked politely.
“Wouldn’t miss it!” Her sister hadn’t either sensed the stiff coldness in her voice or decided to ignore it.
“James and I saw the invitation when we got back from the honeymoon and apparated to the front door!”
When she the look of alarm on Petunia’s face Lily laughed.
“Don’t worry sis, we honestly didn’t! We drove my car.”
Petunia nodded with seeable relief.
Lily walked over to the window and surveyed the pandemonium outside.
“So why isn’t this the wedding you dreamed of in Grade school? You know being married on the front steps of the house, only about 25 guests each. Everyone would have Peanut Butter Sandwiches in your room afterwards? Not that I’m not happy you changed that part.” She said with a smile.
“Oh, I decided the whole thing wasn’t practical. Vernon and I wanted to invite so much more people than expected and the house wasn’t big enough for that many people, and a lot of the people are allergic to peanuts.” Petunia quickly lied. She wasn’t about to let her older sister know that she still wanted that wedding, peanut butter and all, but was to afraid to say anything to Vernon.
“You’re right. The whole thing was always just a six years olds dream anyway.” Lily said with a reassuring smile.
Petunia’s nostrils flared. So, I’m still six years old! She thought furiously at the reminder of that horrible day.
“Petunia, everyone else is ready and Vernon is already in his place are you ready?” Jane poked her head in.
“Yes I am. Do you want to show Lily her spot?” Petunia said nodding at her older sister. Jane nodded and they left together.
Petunia took one last look at her self in the mirror. “What happened to me?” She softly whispered. “When did I give up on myself?”
