My name: Karen Malfoy. How I hated that surname, how I wished I were still Karen Navie. But no, the Malfoys had adopted me, ten years from then.

From the age of five, I had lived among all those rich people, participating in many important social events. But I still kept my simple, humble self inside, because I couldn’t even stand the thought of becoming a snobby, spoiled little daddy’s-girl.

Shortly before I turned ten, Narcissa Malfoy (my adoptive mother) gave birth to a healthy baby boy. They decided to name him Draco… Draco John Malfoy. Quite a beautiful name, I must say. And even then, at such a young age, I felt like it would be my duty to teach and protect that small incomer.

Lucius Malfoy (clearly, my adoptive father) used to be caring towards both his wife and me. In his own distant way, but still caring. That was until Narcissa found out she was pregnant… I overheard a fight they were having once, and that shocked me to my very skull.

“I know that baby is not mine! Narcissa, I know it, whose is it? Tell me, whose is it?” His voice was threatening and aggressive. I could sense that the woman was bloody scared too, replying in a shaky voice:

“Don’t be silly, Lucius, of course it’s yours!”

“That’s not possible. It’s been two months since nothing happens between us, woman, you know it! Whose is it?” After that, I heard a loud sound… Something unexpected, something that certainly didn’t fit Lucius… Didn’t fit the life I had been living until then… I heard a sound of a hand being smashed against skin.

I could already feel my eyes tearing up. That was simply impossible, yet so sad… So unfair. I hurried to my bedroom, laying on the four-poster bed.

“Oh… my dear God.” I whispered, letting a tear trail down my pale face. That was when I was sure that I would have to take care of that child… Because, apparently, no one else would.

Five years later, the fifteen year-old version of myself was lying on the bed, trying but failing miserably to sleep. I didn’t know why, though I was quite sure there was a reason… Which became quite clear in a few moments.

A loud noise came from my brother’s room… There was yelling… Screaming, whimpering… And the unbearably known sound of something hard connecting with skin.

“Oh dear, I can’t believe he’s doing that to his own son…” Were the whispers I managed through shaky lips. I got the urge to go there and stick up for that boy, protect him… He had done nothing, why were they being so cruel? Why, God?

I waited until the door of that horrible couple was closed, slipping on my robe, and sticking my wand in its pocket. I hadn’t noticed just then, but I was trembling slightly.

I opened the bedroom’s door carefully, silent as a cat, avoiding to make even the least perceptible sound. Walking over to Draco’s door, I pushed down the silver doorknob, going slowly in.

“Draco?” The boy was sitting on his bed, crying desperately, and blood stains were visible through his pyjamas. As I closed the door behind myself, he looked over to me, relaxing a little when he saw whom it was.

No mountain’s too high for you to climb
All you have to do is have some climbing faith, oh yeah
No river’s too wide, for you to make it across
All you have to do is believe it when you pray

“Wh-what do y-you want with m-me?” He managed, while I carefully wrapped my arms around his shaky body. He seemed surprised, but turned his head to the side to make it rest on my chest. The tears leaked down his face, moistening my skin and a small part of my nightgown.

And then you will see, the morning will come
And everyday will be bright as the sun
All of your fears cast them on me
I just want you to see...

I started caressing his hair, while he cried. His voice was weak when he asked through the tears:

“Wh-why did Daddy d-do that, Karen? What did I d-do?” I sighed deeply, and replied in my best soothing voice:

“You did nothing, my dear. He’s just cruel… Very cruel.” I had a guess on why Lucius had beaten the poor boy, but telling him was not such a good idea right then. Draco pulled himself closer to me, whispering some words through fast, heavy breath:

“Then w-why did he d-do that? Doesn’t parents’ l-love last f-forever?” How innocent, how pure were that child’s words. Unfortunately, the truth was too harsh. What would I tell him? Wouldn’t it be too tactless to say the truth? Or would it be worse to tell a lie?

I'll be your cloud up in the sky
I'll be your shoulder when you cry
I'll hear your voices when you call me
I am your angel
And when all hope is gone, I’m here
No matter how far you are, I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
I am your angel
I'm your angel

We stayed there in absolute silence for a minute; the only sound hearable was his heavy breath. Draco was slowly relaxing in my arms, though his question was still floating in the air, like a ghost. Doesn’t parents’ love last forever? I was still working on an answer to that.

I saw your teardrops, and I heard you cry
All you need is time, seek me and you shall find
You have everything and you're still lonely
It don't have to be this way, let me show you a better day

“Honey, I… I don’t know. I really don’t know. I’m sorry.” He nodded silently, head still resting on my chest. I grinned slightly, running my fingers through the boy’s hair. He didn’t deserve that kind of treatment… No one did.

And then you will see, the morning will come
And all of your days will be bright as the sun
So all of your fears, just cast them on me
How can i make you see...

I'll be your cloud up in the sky
I'll be your shoulder when you cry
I'll hear your voices when you call me
I am your angel
And when all hope is gone, I’m here
No matter how far you are, I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
I am your angel
I'm your angel

That was when the door opened violently, as Draco turned his back to me and we both stared in shock. It was Lucius Malfoy who stepped in, eyes burning with rage.

And when it's time to face the storm
I'll be right by your side
Grace will keep up safe and warm
And i know we will survive

And when it seems as if your end is drawing near
Don't you dare give up the fight
Just put your trust beyond the sky...

“What the bloody hell are you doing here, girl?” He looked straight at me, and I looked back at him, wishing not to show half of the fright I felt inside. I was still holding the child in my arms, but when Lucius was about to raise his wand, I let go of Draco and whispered quickly:

“Don’t move.” I caught my wand from my pocket, and said:

“I’ve brought mine too, Mr. Malfoy.” He laughed cruelly at my comment, replying in evil amusement:

“And I wonder what a fifteen year-old girl like you can do.” He caught my arm violently, squeezing it with such strength I felt my arm go numb in a few seconds. I was still staring at him straight in the eye, but my voice had notably weakened when I answered quietly:

“Inform the proper authorities. They can get you out of the Ministry in a heartbeat.” He laughed again, but this time it was shorter and less amused:

“If you do…” He placed his wand on my free arm, tracing a short line repetitively, running his wand back and forth over it. “Cortium!” For my shock, a slit opened along the line he was tracing… I couldn’t help but let out a short, low scream of pain. “If you do, it will be much worse… Believe me.” He let go of my arm, exiting the bedroom and slamming the door behind himself.

I could only imagine the hell my life was about to become, as I myself burst into tears.

I'll be your cloud up in the sky
I'll be your shoulder when you cry
I'll hear your voices when you call me
I am your angel
And when all hope is gone, I’m here
No matter how far you are, I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
I am your angel
I'm your angel

I'll be your cloud up in the sky
I'll be your shoulder when you cry
I'll hear your voices when you call me
I am your angel
And when all hope is gone, I’m here
No matter how far you are, I’m near
It makes no difference who you are
I am your angel
I'm your angel
