This is the first thing I've ever written. It's not much, but it was fun. I hope to get better at it and write some more.
It had been James’s greatest desire. Ever since his 7th year at Hogwarts when he and his best mate Sirius had discovered a strange, magical mirror tucked away in the corner of a classroom behind a huge drop cloth, he knew what would make him the happiest man on earth. For in that mirror he saw the day he would be by Lily’s side, cradling their child, the life they made together. The past nine months had been difficult for James. Fellow classmates and friends fell at the hands of Lord Voldemort and nothing he or the Order could do seemed to have any effect at all on curbing the destruction all around them. He worried for Lily and the child she carried, but tried not to let on. He wanted so badly for her to enjoy this time in her life. James was awestruck at how she handled herself for the past nine months. Somehow, it made him love her even more. He remembered how even in her first trimester when all she wanted to do was rest, she pushed on. “I’m no good to the order while lying in bed, James,” she would say as he would plead with her to get some sleep. With all her success in potion making, even she couldn’t control her morning sickness. “We’ve got a little James Jr. in here for sure,” she had said laughing while James rubbed her little protruding belly.
There was a knock on the door as it creaked open slightly. Sirius poked his head through the door and motioned for James. James put down Lily’s hand and whispered to her that he would be right back.
“How is everything going in here?” Sirius asked with a mixture of concern and curiosity.
“Madam Reyes suspects it should happen soon, probably within the next ½ hour.” James replied sounding slightly anxious but with the maturity of a soon-to-be father.
“You go back to Lily and I’ll give everyone the update. Moony just got here a little while ago.”
“Oh that’s great,” James said with a smile. “I didn’t think he was going to be able to come.” James glanced outside at the heavens and saw the moon fade behind a cloud.
“He wouldn’t miss this for the world, James.” Sirius said. “Somehow we all managed to get here, but I’m beginning to wish Wormtail would have waited until after the baby came. I swear he’s going to wear out the floor pacing back and forth. You should see him James, He looks like he’s going throw up he’s so nervous.”
The two best mates laughed and Sirius turned to leave.
“Wait a minute.” James called to Sirius with a sudden seriousness returning to his voice. “I wanted to thank you again for agreeing to be the baby’s godfather. It means the world to me,” he paused choking back tears, “to me and to Lily.” Sirius gave James a hug of support and left the room.
James returned to Lily’s side and squeezed her hand lovingly. Her beautiful green eyes met his and a tear trickled down her cheek. They had waited a long time for this moment. They had wanted to wait until their work for the Order was complete, a time when the Order wouldn’t be needed anymore, but they couldn’t wait forever. It had been 12 years since he first noticed her in Charms class at Hogwarts. “Charming indeed,” James remembered saying to Sirius on the first day back to school in their 5th year. In the two months of the summer holiday, Lily had blossomed into quite a beautiful woman. It wasn’t that she wasn’t pretty before, but now James couldn’t take his eyes off her. It would be another two years of James making a fool of himself until she finally agreed to go out with him.
Lily barely pushed at all and there he was. A son. Ten fingers and ten toes, pink and crying. James admired the grace and poise in which Lily became the mother to his child, but of course, everything Lily did she did with grace and poise. How did he get to be the luckiest man on earth, he though to himself? He had everything he ever wanted right in that little room while all around him lay death and destruction.
James and Lily spent the next ten minutes getting to know their new son. He had a full head of dark hair like his father, but shared his mother’s almond shaped green eyes. James kissed Lily on the forehead.
“You should probably go tell everybody.” Lily said as she handed the bundle to James. He had actually forgotten that there was a room full of people on the other side of the door.
“Be right back.” He said to Lily with a smile as he cradled his child. James walked across the wooden floor and took a deep breath as he opened the door. He looked into the faces of his friends. There was Sirius, Remus, and Peter. His friends. They were always there for him. He looked to his left and saw Molly and Arthur Weasley holding their new baby Ron. James could hear their other five children playing in adjacent room. He saw Moody, just out of St. Mungo’s. James wasn’t sure he’d ever seen him again after the attack that had left him so close to death. It was going to get some getting used his new appearance, James thought to himself. He looked to his right and saw Christine, Hagrid and Grayson. All of his friends were there. Just then as he was about to speak the front door opened and James smiled. Even Professor Dumbledore had come. With all the troubles and danger in the world outside that door, James thought, all these people came here to share this moment with me. His heart swelled.
“May I introduce you all to Harry James Potter.”
