Lily didn't know where she was going but she just needed some fresh air to clear her mind and try and figure out the mysterious letter. 'It's got to be some childish, yet well elaborated, prank,' she thought. 'Hogwarts? What kind of name is that for a magic school anyway?' She watched the sidewalk as she walked, with her hands in her pockets. 'What if Mum and Dad are witches, or wizards or warlocks or whatever, and they never told me? What if Petunia is a witch? She IS constantly gumpy, just like a witch would be.' Lily continued asking herself questions until she heard the sound of someone's hysterical laughter.
Lily looked around but didn't see anyone. She wasn't even familiar with the neighborhood she had wandered into. The houses were rather big but it looked like a pleasant street. She went back to reading the letter over for the 20th time. Lily then heard more laughter from behind her and quickly turned around. Nobody was there. "That's odd." she said aloud.
"Isn't it though?" said a voice from behind her. She jumped and quickly whirled around. The person's face was so close to her's that she quickly moved back and tripped, falling to the pavement.
"Sorry Miss, didn't mean to scare you. No wait, yes I did." said the boy. Lily gave him the dirtiest look she could muster as he started laughing again. She then heard laughter coming from behind a nearby bush. She watched as another boy emerged from behind it laughing just as much as the boy standing over her. She stood up and dusted herself off, giving each boy hateful looks. Lily took a good look at the two boys. The one who had scared her had black, very untidy hair, and round glasses. The other boy who had been hiding behind the bush had the same color hair only neater. He was a bit taller than the messy-haired boy.
“Hey, you dropped this,” said the taller boy, picking up her letter from the ground. He tried reading it while she tried snatching it from his hands. “Ooh, something about magic, James,” said the boy winking at the messy-haired boy. He held just it above his head as she tried jumping to get it. Eventually she gave up.
"How dare you?" Lily said angrily, her hands balled into fists.
"Oh, it wasn't hard." said the messy-haired boy. The boys started laughing a bit more.
“That is my private letter. You have no business reading it,” she said.
“Alright, alright, don’t get your knickers in a twist,” said the taller boy as he let go of the letter. It floated down onto the sidewalk and Lily quickly picked it up and put it in her pocket.
"Hey, you guys. That wasn't a nice thing to do to such a pretty young lady." Lily turned to look at who said that. Across the street , crossing over to where the three of them were standing, was a sandy-haired boy, a little shorter than the two other, immature boys.
"Remus! How's it going?" said the messy-haired boy. Remus seemed to ignore him, walking passed the two boys and up to Lily.
"You'll have to forgive my friends. It's not their fault. They've been unfortunate enough to loose their minds at a young age and haven't been lucky enough to recover them." Remus said. Lily couldn't help but giggle. "I'm Remus by the way, Remus Lupin. This is James Potter and Sirius Black," he said nodding to each friend. James and Sirius took deep, dramatic bows. ‘What odd names,’ she thought.
"And who might you be?" asked Sirius.
"I might be Lily Evans." she said, not really wanting to talk to him. "Now, if you'll excuse me, with the exception of Remus, you're not worth my time. Good day." she said with her nose in the air.
"Meeeeow." said James teasingly. Lily huffed, turned on her heel and started walking away.
"Anyways, did you guys get your letters?"
"Yeah, an owl delivered mine this morning. 2:00 in the morning to be exact! Ruddy owl woke me up on the best night's sleep I've had in ages."
Lily froze at hearing this. Only a few feet away, she turned to face the three boys.
"Same here mate. I think McGonagal sent them out to us personally, just to annoy us.She always had it in for my family" said Sirius with a laugh. Lily walked over to them a little more cautiously than she would have before. The three boys looked at her as she approached.
"Is there something we can help you with?" James asked sarcastically. Lily ignored his tone.
"Y-you got a letter from an owl as well?" she asked shakily.
"Maybe." said Sirius grinning. Remus rolled his eyes.
"Why?" Remus asked.
"You mean, you don't find that strange?"
"Not really. This is about the time we were supposed to be expecting... wait a minute," said Remus, eyeing her thoughtfully.
"You're a muggle, aren't you?" said James, grinning at her. Sirius smacked James in the back of the head.
"You idiot. If she was a muggle, how would she know what a muggle is? To know that you're a muggle means you'd have to know what a muggle is and she clearly doesn't know what a muggle is so she's obviously a muggle," said Sirius. Remus, James and Lily stared at him blankly. The sounds of crickets chirping could be heard. Sirius just folded his arms and smiled in a self pleased way. 'Ok...' Remus mouthed.
"You got a letter too, right?" Remus asked Lily. She nodded and pulled it out of her pockets. Remus took it from her hand a glanced at the envolope. "Thought so." said Remus. James read over his shoulder. He took it upon himself to explain.
"Alright, here's the deal: You're a witch, you know, you have magical abilities. You've been accepted into Hogwarts. There you will learn all the fundamentals of being a good witch and how to deal with your powers with every day life. But, before you go to Hogwarts you need to pick up your supplies, such as a wand, robes, spell books and perhaps a pet and such at Diagon Alley. Any questions?" James finished, smiling in a satisfied way. Lily's eyes were wide.
"Er, well I can only think of one question right now. What is a diagon alley?"
