You walked back into the common room, dazed. Sirius had asked you to the dance. As friends, of course, but still. Lily noticed your lovesick smile.
^So what did Sirius want?^ she asked.
^He asked me to the dance, as-^
^I knew you still liked him!^
^Weíre going as friends.^
^What? It does! You still like him, he obviously still likes you, yet you wonít date!^
^Ok.^ You walked up to your dorm and lay down on your bed.
You sighed. This was such a mess.
^Kara?^ lilyís voice came from above you. You sat up and she sat next to you.
^Iím sorry. Itís none of my business who you donít date. Can you forgive me?^
^Of course, Lil. I guess youíre right, but Iíd rather just let things take their course. You know?^ She nodded.
^Yeah.^ You hugged and headed down to dinner together.
The Marauders were there, talking with their heads bent low.
^Hey guys!^ Lily said loudly. They all jumped, startled, and knocked heads. You both giggled as they rubbed their newly bruised skulls.
^What are you plotting now?^ You asked as you sat down. ^I mean, other than how to get some Advil for those headaches.^ They glared.
^Nothing.^ Sirius replied very unconvincingly.
^Ok then.^ You knew it as something good, and you couldnít wait to find out.
^Hey, Lily?^ James began.
^Can I talk to you after dinner?^ She nodded, her mouth full.
^Ok. Great.^ He looked nervous, almost like- he was going to ask her to the dance! You realized. You whispered your suspicions to Remus who just nodded confirmation.
Since you now wanted dinner to be over so badly, it took forever. But finally the meal concluded and James and Lily made their way outside, away from the crowds going up to bed.
You waited in your dorm for what seemed like forever, until Lily came up.
^What did James want, Lil?^
^He asked me to the dance!^ Really? What a surprise.
^And you saidÖ^
^Yes!^You smiled. She looked very pleased. ^And then-^ Thereís more? ^he kissed me!^ No Way.
^MmmHmm.^ She sighed happily and sat down on your bed.
^Did you kiss him back?^ She looked at you like you were stupid.
^Of course I kissed him back!^
^So thatís why you were gone so long!^ She blushed. You laughed and she joined in, and she told you and Nat all the details as you got ready for bed.
The weeks before the dance went quickly, until there were only two weeks left. There was a Hogsmeade trip today so people could get their outfits and anything else they would need.
Since Lily was going with James and Nat with Remus and Peter with Allison, you and Sirius hung out together. You laughed the morning away in Zonkoís and Honeydukeís and the Three Broomsticks until the couples met you there at 1. Then you, Nat, lily, and Allison went to get your dresses, leaving the guys to drink and talk about you.
Allison was a nice girl. She had mousy brown hair and blue eyes, and her heavily freckled face was almost always turned upwards in a smile.
^So how are things going with you and Peter?^ you asked as you browsed through the endless racks of dresses.
^Great! I really like him. Heís so sweet.^
^Iím glad. Heís normally too shy to talk to girls, but he really seems to like you.^ She smiled bigger.
^Really? Wow.^ There was a short pause. ^So how are you and Sirius doing?^ you dropped the dress you were holding.
^You know, Sirius Black? The guy whoís best friends with James Potter-^
^I know who he is!^ you cut her off. ^Iím not dating Sirius.^
^Really? Iím sorry. I just assumed- I mean youíre going to the dance together, and you always hang out and you look good togetherÖ^ she trailed off. ^Sorry.^
^Itís alright.^ you smiled at her. No one had thought you were dating Sirius for a long time now. Or, if they did, no one asked.
^So do you know what you want to do when you get out of school?^ you asked the 16 year old Hufflepuff.
^Iíd like to be a medi-witch, I think. Helping people is always something Iíve liked.^ She continued talking about class requirements and how rewarding a job it would be for her. You smiled and nodded and continued the hunt for a dress.
Nat and Lily had already picked theirs out and were impatient. You ignored their coaxing to hurry up and browsed slowly. Allison found one next, and you still looked.
Finally, you saw it. The perfect dress. It was gorgeous, and it felt great when you tried it on. You bought it and let your friends usher you on to the shoe department.
After an exhausting afternoon of shopping, you headed back to the castle. Your cheeks were flushed from the crisp October air and your constant laughter. You were talking to James about the previous dayís Quidditch practice when a blonde girl sat next to Sirius.
^Hey, Black. You have a date for the dance yet?^ she said in a sultry voice.
^Yeah.^ She pouted her heavily glossed lips at Sirius, and then swaggered away.
^Sirius, if thereís someone you want to go with-^ he cut you off.
^I told you, thereís not. Especially not her. Too much lip gloss.^
^That never stopped you before!^ James teased. You heard a noise under the table that sounded distinctly like a kick, and then James yelled,
^Ow!^ Sirius glared and then turned back to you.
^Anyway, Iím perfectly happy going with you.^
^Alrighty then!^ you turned back to your meal.
James and Lily spent every waking second in each otherís company. All of you had interrupted one of their make out sessions more than once. Things were moving fast between them, you figured they were making up for lost time. They were both completely smitten, and on the few occasions they werenít together they wanted to talk about the other.
You had tolerated this for the last three weeks, hoping that eventually your friend would see how annoying it was for you to alternate between not having her around and having her around only to have her gush about her boyfriend every second. She didnít notice.
There were two weeks until the dance, and you didnít think you could take one more in depth description of Lilyís day: James did this and James said that, do you know where James took me today? She sat with James during classes, and you with Nat or Peter. It was Thursday, and youíd been so busy with Quidditch that you hadnít done any of the homework youíd received this week. You settled down to begin this pile of assignments, and had barely finished your first task when Lily came in. She sat down next to you, and, of course, began to give you the play by play of her latest make-out session with the amazing Mr. Potter. You tried to tune her out, and it must have worked, because you were writing when Lily waved a hand in front of your face.
^Kara? Are you listening to me?^ That was it.
^Am I listening to you? Am I listening to you? Iíve been listening to you for 3 weeks! 3 weeks!^ She tried to interrupt. ^No! You listen to me! I have tried to tolerate you not being around, EVER, and when you are around talking about James. Iím glad youíre finally dating, but you spend every waking moment with the guy, and then you talk about him in your sleep! So now Iím tired, I have no best friend around, and Iíve got homework up to my ears! My ears that are tired of listening!^ Lily looked surprised, then angry.
^Well, Kara, Iím sorry you canít be happy for me just because I have a boyfriend and you donít.^ That was so far off. Couldnít she see that you missed her? ^But I wonít sit around and let you tell me what a bad friend I am. Wouldnít a good friend be happy for me?^ You opened your mouth in shock, and then closed it. She thought you were jealous? Maybe a little, but only because the time James got used to be your time. But pulling the I-have-one-you-donít-so-youíre-jealous? I donít think so.
^If you feel that way, then you donít have to sit here and listen to this. Just do what youíve been doing, and leave!^ She glared at you, and then got up and left the common room.
You collapsed onto the couch and cried.
How much time can two people possibly spend together? For the love of cheese! Youíd seen James like twice in the past three weeks. And one of those times was when he was making out with Lily- on your bed! Honestly.
You were happy for Prongs, but was he really going to fall over and die if he separated from his girlfriend for like an hour? You hadnít pulled one prank together since he asked Lily out. Yeah, Remus and Peter were good, but Prongsie- a marauding genius. Not anymore, you thought bitterly. But hey, you were happy for him- the guy only chased her for 6 years.
And eventually theyíd stop spending all their time together. You could wait. You walked into the common room and saw Kara on the couch. You heart broke when you saw she was crying.
^Kara? Whatís wrong?^ you sat next to her. She leaned into your chest. You put your arms around her, and to your surprise she hugged you back.
^I had a fight with Lily.^ she sobbed. You stroked her hair.
^Why?^ she sniffed.
^Well, for the past few weeks she hasnít been around, and when she is she only wants to talk about her latest kiss, but I listened anyway because Iím happy for her. But then tonight I was trying to work, and she got mad at me for not listening, and I kind of- over reacted.^ She leaned back in to you.
^itís okay. Youíre right about Lily. James has been the same way. Sheíll come around.^
^I hope so,^ she mumbled into your chest. ^She was really mad. And she said I was jealous that she had a boyfriend and I donít.^
^No!^ she cried indignantly.
^Sorry. Just making sure.^
^Itís ok.^ She sighed and got up. Her eyes were puffy and her hair was messy from leaning on you. Nat walked into the common room.
^Kara, what happened?^
^I had a fight with Lily.^
^Why?^ Kara relayed the story to her friend.
^Wow. I donít believe you said that to her! I mean, Iíve been wanting to for days, but still, that was a little mean, Kara.^
^I know. I feel badly, but I just- snapped.^ Nat nodded in understanding.
^Iím sure sheíll see your point.^
But Lily didnít see the point.
