You open your eyes slowly, yawning. You’d fallen asleep in the armchair.
Great yellow eyes with huge black pupils stare back at you.
With one last terrified croak, the oversized amphibian leaps off your chest and into the arms of a gawky-looking boy.
“Sorry ‘bout Trevor,” the boy mutters. “I can never keep track of him…” He scratches a spot between the toad’s eyes. Trevor’s lids descend upon his yellow orbs of eyes, content. “I’m Neville, by the way. Neville Longbottom.”
You offer your hand to him, as Harry had done last night. Neville takes it with a shy smile. He moves it up and down as you try not to stare. So that’s what Harry had been meaning to do!
“Nice to meet you…”
“Shadow,” you say, holding back a yawn. Classes are going to start soon, and you’re still half asleep. “That’s what everyone calls me.”
“Nice to meet you, Shadow.” Neville checks his watch. “I’d better be off. I’m still getting lost in this castle, even after seven years…”
Neville seems nice enough…
‘He’ll only hurt me, just like everyone else outside of Blade.’
I’m not part of the Guild anymore…
‘I always will be. They taught me everything I know—How to fight, how to kill…’
Leave me alone…
You blink a few times, hard.
You watch as Neville leaves the common room. The smile eventually disappears. Seven years, and Neville still doesn’t know his way around? Shit. This only means you’re going to have a harder time…
Several classes later, you sit in Defense Against the Dark Arts. It’s a miracle you’ve been able to find the classroom, all the others you’ve had to stop random people in the hallway. The biggest problem is you schedule. For some reason, it has everything but the professors’ names, so you’ve been listening closely to write them down.
Okay, maybe you’re not listening that closely.
You’re doodling on a piece of parchment when the professor walks in.
“Professor Lupin? I have a question about the summer assignment…” someone says.
As in Remus Lupin?
You look up slowly.
You close your eyes as a painful memories resurface.
“Shadow, baby, this is going to be your sitter. That okay?” Your mum kissed the top of your head affectionately. “Daddy and I have to go somewhere, so Remus’ll be watching you.”
“I don’t needa sitter, Mummy. I c’n take care-a myself!” You exclaimed, glaring at the amber-eyed newcomer.
“Oh, It’ll be fun, Shadow! You’ll have a friend with you all the time. Doesn’t that sound nice?”
“I guess.” You admitted stubbornly. “Promise it’ll be fun?”
“An’ Daddy won’t make him go away like everybody else?”
“Of course, darling.”
You motioned for your mum to get closer to you. “But what if he doesn’t like me?” You whispered in her ear. “Will he go ‘way if he doesn’t like me?”
“I’m sure he likes you, honey. Now go on…Time for bed.” She pulled you into a tight embrace and planted little kisses on your forehead. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Mum.”
That would be the last time you saw her.
-One Year Later-
“Whatcha gonna do when you’re…” You wrinkled your nose, trying to think of a big number. “Thirty…thirty…thirty-five?” There. That should be a big enough number.
He shrugs. “A teacher, maybe.”
“You’re not gonna get alotta money.”
“I’m not really concerned about that, but how would you know? You’re only six.” He said with a chuckle.
“Daddy told me.”
Remus fell silent.
“Wanna know what else he told me?”
You took his silence as a yes.
“He said that he doesn’t want you ta watch me anymore. But I want you ta stay, Rem. ‘Cos Daddy’s never around, and I get lonely. An’ Mum’s not here anymore…S’not fun when you gotta sit an’ be quiet alla the time.” You pouted, thinking of all the times you’d had Silencing Charms put on you by your father and his friends. “You come you’re not talking anymore?” You pushed two small hands through his sandy hair, fluffing it up. His hair was fun to play with. You braided it sometimes, much to his annoyance, but you could never manage to braid your own. “You feeling okay?”
“That’s notta word, Rem. If you wanna be a teacher, you gotta say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.”
“Fine, Shadow. Yes.”
“Yes, I’m feeling okay.”
“Good.” You scooched closer and rested your head on his arm. “Tell me a story?”
You raised an eyebrow as best as you could. “What?”
“Yes, I’ll tell you a story.”
“Shadow?” Remus approaches you after class.
He looks just like how you remember, only…older. It seems strange to you that Remus can age. From your viewpoint as a child, he’d always seemed like a friend and playmate…It was like he’d never change. Like you’d never change. But you had…You both had. And now…Now he was just another adult.
You ignore him, averting your eyes.
“Shadow, please. I really need to talk to you,” he says softly.
Funny, it almost seems like he’s begging. Remus sounds a bit like your last target. He never used to do that...And you’re not going to show him any mercy.
Turning your back to him, you get up slowly and walk out…
Just like he did to you.
Okay, so I lied. This chapter wasn't that dark...Future chapters should (and will) be. I know there hasn't been much you/Harry action yet, but there will be, I promise! (But I did make this one longer...I had to do a lot of editing, I was giving things away in this chapter that weren't coming up until later.) Thanks for being so patient with me!
