Review #1, by Dirigible_Plums The Christmas Gift for Newtown (Ben's Crush)

29th July 2016:
Hello!

I know this is extremely late, but I have FINALLY arrived to review this entry for my AU Challenge. I am so sorry for the long wait, but you might be relieved to know that I plan to release the results on my tumblr (elixirsoflife) soon :)

This was a very thought-provoking one shot. What happened at Newtown was absolutely awful and was a huge blow to everyone. Of course all shootings are terrible, but the fact that these were just children took that despair to new heights. Hermione's inner turmoil is completely understandable and relatable throughout, especially when you find out that her own daughter's friend was a victim. For that, I don't blame her for wanting to change the past.

Actually, I am bit divided on the fact that she and McGonagall actually did it. As we saw in the books, Hermione is adamant that those who meddle with time are doomed and that though we want to stop all bad things from happening, it's just not feasible. So how readily McGonagall and Hermione do decide to change a huge part of history seemed a little strange to me.

Despite this, it is completely understandable that they did and I am glad they succeeded. Gun control in America is a particularly controversial subject. Personally, I agree with the way this one shot changed it because then we can avoid tragedies such as the Newtown shooting.

Ultimately, this was both a thoughtful and heartbreaking one shot/entry. If only Time Spinners did actually exist!

Thank you for entering this into my challenge!

Plums xo

Author's Response: Oh, wow, I'd forgotten about this, thank you for reviewing though!
My mom wrote it last Christmas. Considering she's a mom and actively involved in Girl Scouts, she really wanted to relate Hermione as a mother, to the tragedy. She's also always wanted McGonagall to be a more involved character in the books and I honestly think, since she's a professor, this would also impact her deeply.
I think they both still lived up to the essence of the rules of time turners. It was a really big topic, but I think that's why they were so ready to change it.
I'm glad you thought it was thought provoking and heartbreaking though, that's really what happened wasn't it?
I'm not active on tumbler, but I'll look it up every once in a while.
Thanks!

Review #2, by TreacleTart The Christmas Gift for Newtown (Ben's Crush)

22nd January 2016:
Hey Heather & Heather's Mom!

I'm here to review this story for the Gryffindor Red vs. Gold review battle! Go Team red!

This was a really unique concept to have Hermione and Professor McGonagall return to a different time to fix the gun tragedy of today. The thing that was nice was that you also presented a rational reason for them to do this and made it seem quite plausible.

Newton was such a tragic event particularly because of how young the children were. Don't get me wrong, it's awful when anyone is murdered, but this was just especially awful. I can absolutely imagine thousands of people wishing for a time spinner (which I'm assuming is different from a time turner) to go back and fix it.

It was nice to see the interaction between Hermione, Ben, and Professor McGonagall, but at the same time, I wish there was a bit more. The conversation was very short and I was really surprised that Ben didn't question any of it. I mean if someone suddenly showed up claiming to be from the future, most people would be skeptical at least. That's really my only CC though.

All in all, I thought this was a thought provoking piece and I hope that some day someone will figure out how to rid us of this problem.

Great work!

~Kaitlin

Author's Response: Hi, this is Heather, I tried to give mom time to respond herself, but she's been busy.
I'm so glad you liked it, and yes, the time spinner was different because I remembered the turners were destroyed. Plus it would give us the option to return to the present where the turners did not.

I'm so glad you liked the interaction with Ben Franklin. I think it was so short and unquestioned because mom wanted to highlight just the interaction between them and Mr. Franklin and how urgent it was. He may have had a few drinks already and would have been less skeptical because of it. At least, that's my thought.

I'm so glad you liked it though, it's so hard to do a believable AU and I think my mom was very spot on here.

Thanks so much!

Review #5, by The Basilisk The Christmas Gift for Newtown (Ben's Crush)

20th December 2015:
Hiss, Hiss. Guess who? The Basilisk, with a review.

Wow, I loved thisss. It was so sweet and touching, and the idea behind it, just beautiful. I loved the concept of Hermione and Minerva travelling back in time and preventing the Connecticut shootings by convincing Ben Franklin to help. Such a noble cause, no doubt these two women would work towards.

Hermione's characterisation was great and so was Minerva's. I loved reading about little Rose too. You tore at my cold snake-y heart with the lovely tackling of subject through your story. The descriptions, dialogue, and overall narrative made for a nice read. We will never forget, indeed.

Great job.

Hiss Hiss,
The Basilisk

Author's Response: Well bless your cold snakey heart for such a nice review! Historical facts all lined up like a solar eclipse, apparently it was time for that story to manifest. I hope it reaches others here in the USA and elsewhere to vote and keep voting to affect change.
Thanks again!

Review #6, by Avanell 2 The Christmas Gift for Newtown (Ben's Crush)

19th December 2015:
Wonderfully done...oh, excellent and important story! Enjoyed their visit back in time, and of course the REASON for it. And right on the target reasoning (no pun intended with "target"). Loved it!!!

Author's Response: Thank you so much. There was such a connection to Girl Scouting with that event, it seemed proper to connect with both Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Perhaps another story about Rose's Brownie meeting at McGonigall's school will be in order, in the future :) The girl name was not a factual one, out of respect, of course. The real families declined many offers of a Girl Scout memorial, they couldn't handle a huge event at the time (The CT GSC formed a campership fund in their honor, we lost nearly an entire Daisy GS troop). So many historical facts fell into place, Mrs Haywood was a very important figure in the history of feminism and in publishing :) I would bet that Mr Franklin really DID know of her and admire her work :) We will definitely get to Ben Franklin's House the next time we're visiting near Trafalgar again. Never enough time in London :( :) Thanks again.
