Review #1, by Santa Claus We Made A Vow

20th December 2014:
Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas, Sarah! Now let's see here, let's see... Ah! OH. Oh no... Erm... It looks like you've been put on the Naughty List this year... so, er... I'm afraid all I have for you is this lump of coa-

So sorry. Hold on just one second, please... and... yep! Whoops! I was looking at the wrong Sarah! That's my bad. You are on the Nice List this year after all! In that case, I come bearing the gift of a review! Ho ho ho!

Let's get started, shall we?

Ah, this was so intense! My heart breaks for Lily! Obviously, this story was very reminiscent of the actual music video for the song (great song/video to be inspired by, by the way), but I loved the small changes you made to the story line and how you gave it a much more personal voice by keeping it only in Lily's perspective. You also gave a purpose to all of the things we see her destroy in the music video. Like the pile of clothes, which I had assumed were just her being angry and exacting her revenge by burning his favorite suits or something, but then you turned that into her burning the ones that had traces of the other woman on them. It's those small details that really allow the story to shine and hit hard.

This line was so heartbreakingly poignant: Maybe if she's perfect he'll love her again. - It's terrible to feel this way and think this way, but I think a lot of women can really relate to the sentiment, as sad as that may be.

I love how so many of the little things she does and uses and destroys are somehow related to their marriage. Like the wine, for example, that was an anniversary gift, rather than simply bought at the store in desperation to dull her mind. It says that she's not just going crazy and destroying things, but she's meticulously picking out the stuff that was supposed to mean something to them as a couple and purposefully destroying those - to make a statement, no doubt, even if she believes he'll never notice.

And then it circles back around to her need to look - to be - perfect. Angry and hurt and devastated as she is, and regardless of the fact that she knows what he's been up to, still all she wants in the world is for him to love her and stay with her and see her the way he used to. To remember why it was her he chose years ago, and not this other woman. There's something so heavy and sad and vulnerable about that thought. It's like... I want her to be strong enough to be able to walk away, or to fight harder for what she deserves, rather than to drop it the moment he denies her accusations, but at the same time I understand how hard it can be to walk away from someone that you feel you've wrapped so much of yourself into.

"Oh, you know, the same as usual. I just played in the garden." - LOL! This line. So great. The perfect bit of dark humor to balance out the rest of the story.

And then those ending lines! Omg. - Her smile fades as he's no longer looking at her. She thinks she sees a spot of red on the neck of his robes. - Gah! Those lines are just so perfectly indicative of their entire relationship and everything that's wrong with it!

Anyway, this was a really great one-shot, Sarah. Seriously well done. I sincerely enjoyed it. :)

Merry Christmas,
Santa Claus

I read this back when it was James and Lily and I'm sort of sad you changed it because this is really well written and I despise Jily so this is like, my thing y'know.

Bear with me, I don't know how to review anymore because I haven't left a proper one in like, forever. So... yeah.

Her hands are pressed to her chest, as if to hold her breaking, fragmented heart in. -- DO YOU KNOW HOW ACCURATE THIS IS? I love what you did with that, that was a great moment and I was all like "dayummm"

But really, this story was really nice. I love this song and of course the music video this was inspired from and everything... was really really well written. I remember reading other story like waaay back and now this, it's really amazing and you've improved so much which is great Sarah! ♥

Really well written, had fun reading it!

Author's Response: Hey Hon!

You hate Jily?! I think you're the first person I've ever seen say that!

I felt that it wasn't as believable as Lily/James. I mean, it fit, but at the same time, it just didn't. I couldn't see her being so weak, and I couldn't see him being so awful. I think having this be Lily II not only gives me lots of room to play with her past and characterization, but it also adds a lot of room for growth. I'm glad you liked the story, thanks so much for the review!

Ugh. I feel the need to smack Lily and James around. They're both clearly living in a broken relationship but are not addressing their issues. I guess I should say that I've always imagined their relationship turning into something that's kind of superficial but I always saw the superficiality as an exterior play, not something they do to each other.

Lily's need to be perfect for James may be the same thing that drove him away. There's not a lot of history between James and Lily in this story so that's mainly a projection of my own world view. I can see where you tried to make Lily a bit of a tragic figure who is in a tough spot but she mostly seems like she's not able to face her problems head on. I was glad that you alluded to her trying to talk to James - but there's really a point where people have to do the difficult thing and live with difficult consequences. Lily's driving need to not show any sign of having an issue is almost pathological. It's a very interesting direction to take her in - especially based on the little exposure she has in the books.

James' likely infidielity and aloof treatment of Lily is equally frustrating for me. In general, people who step out of a relationship instead of discussing what is making them unhappy irk me. If he's unhappy to the point of cheating but is still faking a happy relationship, he really needs to sit down and discuss what is making him unhappy.

You present a very interesting narrative - I like the complex view you give into marriage.

Author's Response: Hey Rose.

I know that you didn't really like this story. You're actually a huge part of the reason why i made it Lily II instead of Lily I. That being said, I'm glad you gave me your honest opinion and I appreciate the review. Thanks so much hon!

Hello. :)

Your writing is absolutely flawless. I have no doubt that I'll go about the rest of the week recalling every single word. It's all emotionally riveting and it will haunt me. Thanks, I guess. :)

I like how everything is revealed slowly and implicitly. You plant these little hints in our minds with your words and they grow into complete understanding and cause emotional torment.

10/10! :D

Review #6, by Veritaserum27 We Made A Vow

18th August 2014:
Hi Sweetie!

Here for the review swap!

Gosh, this one was a hard one to read (you probably know why), but I kind of felt like ah! Not Lily and James! It's almost like finding out that your parents marriage was a sham, ya know?

I really liked the short sentences at the beginning (and a bit at the end, too). It almost defined the way that her thoughts were coming in little bursts. She almost seemed clearer when he wasn't around. This line nearly killed me:

Maybe if she's perfect he'll love her again.

It just set the scene for how far into depression Lily has gotten. She's grasping at anything to hold her to reality. It seems so sad that she stays home all day, while he goes off to work. It just makes her life seem smaller. I also teared up at this line:

She backed off. She was never one for fights.

Oh. So not Lily. Lily was a fighter and he just took everything from her. It seems that she is so deep into this that she doesn't even remember herself. Ugh, Sarah! You broke my Lily!

This was really, really beautiful writing and I'm so glad that you posted it because I was just about to PM you and hound you to post something! Haha!

Thanks for doing a swap!

Author's Response: Hi!

You're too cute. You didn't have to read it if you didn't want to!! ♥

I actually didn't decide who I was writing about until I got to the very end. When I was re-reading I did kind of get stuck at how Lily was a fighter, but I felt like for where she was in this particular story it didn't feel right for her to fight. Not yet. Obviously they overcome that point in their relationship and have Harry and are that happy perfect couple, but, I don't know. It felt right to write about Lily and break her a little. She's always so strong and brave and almost kind of perfect. I had to kick that one in the gut.

I'm so glad you liked it! I know I know! I've been so slow! I intend to post some more things tonight and tomorrow, hopefully, so keep an eye out!! (I'll be posting statuses though)

Of course, thanks to you, too!

Review #7, by Infinityx We Made A Vow

18th August 2014:
SARAH I AM LITERALLY IN TEARS EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T FINISHED READING THIS AND I DON'T KNOW WHO IT IS. This is heartbreaking and perfect. I'm at the part where she looks at the clothes in the hamper. Poor, poor thing. And everything's so clear. He hasn't even tried to hide it from her. I don't know why she's still with him.

Impeccably perfect. That's just. This is tearing me apart bit by bit from the inside. On the outside, she's like a doll. All smiles and love. But she's breaking inside and it's something that's so believable, and so beautifully written. I don't even know what to say, Sarah. You're supposed to be the writer who makes everyone happy, not break our hearts.

Oh wow, she's burned his clothes. Go mystery woman! Has she finally had enough? Is she going to leave? I sure hope so.

Red hair...marauders. Oh no. No no no. Is this who I think it is? Sarah, I will hate you if my suspicions are confirmed.

She needs to look perfect. Oh no. I need a moment to gather myself before I go any further. I can completely empathize with her right now because I've seen a lot of people this way, but this is just overwhelming and jknkdfnm. Your writing is just so powerful, and (sorry, not sorry) perfect. Ok, onwards.

She is so strong, it's inspiring, but heartbreaking at the same time. I can't believe she's going back to being the perfect, adoring wife.

OMG I WAS RIGHT EVEN THOUGH I HOPED I WASN'T AND THIS IS JUST. SARAH. HOW COULD YOU. LILY?! AND JAMES? NO. JUST NO. I don't hate you but just. What. You can't. I'm bawling my eyes out.

"I just played in the garden." I cannot even begin to explain how brilliant every single line of this story is. And the ending sentence. Just perfect. You've reduced me to a mess, Sarah. Your writing was just beautiful in this. Flawless. I always love your writing but this is just a whole new level.

I need to recover now. Thank you for breaking my heart.

It's going in my favourites even though you did.

Author's Response: Hey Erin!

I'm so glad that this story moved you to tears. I was so inspired by the music video and the song and I worked really hard to get it to work in story form. Especially in the HPVerse. That being said, I think it came out really well. I love your angst at the idea of it being Lily and James. I have changed it now, though! After a few comments on the believability of it, I felt it was smarter to make it Lily II. It also sets us up for some interesting chapters in her Anthology!

Anyway, thanks so much for the review! I'm so glad you liked the story!

xoxo Sarah ♥
