House Cup 2015 - Hufflepuff!

Hey Cassie!
I absolutely adored this story. I loved the repetition of each sentence with a new spin on it, as though portraying two thoughts while describing the one person. I felt reading that if you had wanted to, you could have personified Victoire as having Bipolar disorder or even multiple personality disorder, simply through the way you began with such notions of dark feelings and self-loathing, before switching at the end to happy, joyous feelings of belonging and gratefulness.

This was a really interesting read and I definitely enjoyed every second of it. I love that you ended on a happy note and I adored the imagery you conjured with such beautiful and emotive language. Absolutely brilliant work. Thanks so much for contributing this to the archives as it was a joy to read.

Keep it up!

Author's Response: Hi Ellie!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this story! I got inspiration for this really randomly one day, and as soon as I sat down to write it, I got it all down in one sitting, and it was something that just seemed to click. I think as the oldest Next Gen kid, Victoire would have quite a lot of pressure on her, because all of her younger cousins would look to her to see what Hogwarts is like and what growing up is like and all that. So it would be pretty easy for her to feel overwhelmed and see herself negatively. But, in the end, she is able to find her strengths and what makes her unique and use that to see herself in a much more positive light.
Thank you so much for the lovely review!

WOW! What a WONDERFUL inspirational story! Very powerful. I wish I had your writing style too, it was quite lovely. I am totally jealous, I can't write near as good. It really gives someone a sense of power. :)

I have rated this a 9/10.

Review #3, by TidalDragon Victory

6th July 2014:

So this was a different story from anything I've read on the archives before. While it was a very character-driven piece, it also carried such a unique tone for a story that explored contrasts. Rather than seeming to focus on the contrast itself and the duality of an individual (which is often thought-provoking, but more somber) it struck a firmly celebratory note rather than a challenging one. I think that was very well done.

The structure was also artfully managed. While you used literal contrasts during the story, you also drew a sharp line for contrasts straight though the middle of the piece which I think was critical to allowing you to hit that celebratory tone I mentioned earlier.

You also gave the piece an incredible symmetry with your use of the word victory and the dimensions and comparisons associated with it. I always enjoy symmetry in stories, but even more so in one-shots where it's incredibly apparent.

Honestly, I'd love to see this vision for this character put into reality in a longer fic. If you can capture in a longer format that focuses on Victoire the contrasts and struggles, but simultaneous positivity you achieved here I think it would be exceptional - you could just fit a plot around the character.

Very well done! Thanks for sharing!

I'm so thrilled that you enjoyed this, and that you found it to be a unique story! It was a really new style and structure for me to write, and I wasn't sure how people would respond to it, so I'm really glad that you enjoyed it!
I definitely want to write Victoire again at some point, and would definitely come back to this story for inspiration. Thank you so much for reading and leaving such a wonderful review!

Hi there Cassie!
That was so sweet, I really loved it. Vic is a character that everyone seems to have a different take on, and I thought what you did with her was amazing. The structure was really clever - I liked how it almost starts flowing backwards, as if she is looking back on her life and seeing that things weren't quite as bad as she had thought when they happened. Thank you for sharing this!

Author's Response: Hi Chazzie!
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this. It was an experiment for me, as it was my first time writing Victoire and writing in this style. I didn't think that I would structure like I did until I got about half of the way through, and once I settled on the idea the rest of the story flowed really naturally. I'm so happy you enjoyed my take on Victoire, and thank you so much for leaving a review!

Hi! This is a really lovely oneshot! I love second person because it naturally lends itself to interesting narrative styles, and this, this was just beautiful. Your imagery is so easy to see and feel, and the words just flow so well. I love that the entire thing is told in memories too, it's perfect for the visual, flowy sentences.

I love the way you juxtapose the two sides to Victoire. It's cool that you chose her to write about her in particular, as Victory has two sides as well. But I love the message that comes across through her memories. You can either focus on the bad, or the good; things happen, but ultimately it is your choice whether to have a positive or negative outlook on life and that's what this says to me. Victoire has had some hardships, but at the end of the day she still has a smile on her face.

I am so glad I got to read this!! It's beautifully done, a great read. :)

Author's Response: Hello!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review! I just started writing in second person pretty recently, so I wanted to give it another go with this story. Victoire is a character I'd been wanting to write, and when I suddenly got the inspiration for this, I sat down and wrote it all at once.
I wanted to work through memories that would be really important to making Victoire turn out to be the woman she is. I tried to use experiences that would really affect her as a person, and show how complicated and how human she is.
I'm so happy you liked the message of the story! Having hope is so important in life, and I wanted that to come across in this, so I'm glad you could see that! Thank you again for the lovely review!

Review #6, by Gabriella Hunter Victory

9th June 2014:

Hey, there! I told you that I'd be here to read this in no time at all and here I am! I am seriously blown away by how lovely this is, I didn't expect this from you and it was such a nice surprise that I could barely keep track of my feels. I think the narration and style is so unique for this one-shot, I can get the scope of Victoire's life through this so well and I adore what you did.

Each paragraph is like a piece of her life and the changes that you show happening here and there are so poignant. The heartbreak of a first love, the insecurity of being a teenager and then finally, to becoming a woman.

Gah, it was beautiful writing! What inspired this? I've never seen a Victoire portrayed in this way and I LOVE it. I honestly do. I hope you continue making more one-shots or stories like this because I felt like I understood and loved her by the end. Brilliant!

Much love,

P.S.: "Transparent" shall be up by tomorrow at the latest and "Abandon" is up there waiting and there's always Audrey and Albus to get you caught up! Update soon!

Author's Response: Hello!
I'm so thrilled that you enjoyed this one-shot! I'm not sure where the inspiration came from, but it just hit me all of the sudden and I literally sat down and wrote this entire thing in one go. Victoire is a character that I haven't explored very much, and I've been wanting to write her, so this was a fun opportunity to do so! I know she's going to make an appearance in ASOS at some point when Darcy meets her, but I wanted to get more in depth with her character first. The style was also really new for me, but something that I really enjoyed playing with. I love exploring metaphors and imagery, so I did a lot of that here, too. I hadn't thought about writing more one-shots like this one, but now that you've given me the idea I'll definitely think about it! Thank you so much for the lovely review!
