Review #2, by TumTum Chapter 3.

19th September 2014:
Hi I'm sorry I got as far as the line "she's too nice for this school" and felt like I had to say something before reading on!

My initial impression of Sophia is that she is cripplingly shy and lacking in confidence when it comes to her peers. I can definitely relate to that lack in confidence and feeling awkward around people but I find her communication skills to be appalling. I think if I were speaking to someone who completely refused to make eye contact at all then I'd be rather offended. It's a common courtesy - how are you supposed to communicate or observe someone if you won't even look at them!

I've known people to do cruel, selfish and unkind things as a result of their shyness and insecurity. It's an excuse that only gets you so far; a lot of people suffer from it and, like many things, behaving confidently takes practise.
From that point of view, Neville's decision to make her head girl makes sense, but going so far as to imply that she is without fault in the situation is annoying.

Also, while I think that her meekness means that she makes for a compassionate head, I'm irritated that she's doing her fifth years' jobs for them. It should be her job to make sure that they do theirs and she is neglecting that duty.

0 communication skills is something that the new heads share - apparently Fred lacked them so much that he failed to see all those frowns that the prefects were making in their meeting on the train. It was poor form of him to not consult his fellow head at all before launching into the duties and even worse not to look her way at all to see what she thought. But I don't blame him for getting her name wrong. Especially when nobody corrected him? (I get why Sophia didn't but why didn't anyone else speak up, at least 1/4 of them were related to him...). Apparently neither of them has made the effort to meet the other half way? Meekness and overconfidence aren't excuses. By rights, they should have expected insubordination of some kind from their prefects...

Also there is a difference between niceness and goodness, one is not an indicator of the other. Sophia seems genuinely kind but like she feels the need to put on a nice front or people won't like her. It comes across a bit dishonest, especially when she seems to think the worst of the majority of her peers?

Finally I find it bizarre that Neville lets her call him Nev... it seems disrespectful... but I suppose he has a different style to Dumbledore, just as Sophia has a different style to Harry (who addresses Mr and Mrs Weasley as... Mr and Mrs Weasley...) That said, isn't he at all concerned about favouritism? Or fulfilling the appropriate role when at school?

Sorry about this ranty review. It's silly really because there is nothing wrong with a flawed heroine, especially in a story about personal growth but I was disappointed in Neville. A headmaster should be able to look at all their pupils objectively and not be blind to their flaws.

Tl;dr I like the idea of two heads who have opposite personalities but who may balance each other out. The head role position is filled with possibilities for a good story but it would be a mistake to say that feeling sorry for someone means that you should like them or assuming that because you are shy... other people should make all the effort.

If I've got the wrong idea, feel free to say so!

Author's Response: Thank you for your review. I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to point out things that as an author I should have seen, but didn't.

You're right, and in a shoddy defence of myself, I'm writing this story as a shy person myself who overcame shyness with the help of friendship and I'm really sorry that the characters are a little off but I just suppose I really didn't like people who treated me differently because I found it hard to look into people's eyes and when no one talked to me because I didn't talk to them. I understand that Sophia is in the wrong too (as I probably was, but when it's personal sometimes you just don't see it). And in later chapters you'll see why Neville is so lax with her. He does have a little favouritism, but at the same time he asked around the students before he made the choices for head students and things like that and maybe that isn't enough but he tried, you know?

I can try to go back over it and tweak them so it's a little nicer to read.

I read a lot of hpff. A lot. But this is the first story that made me want to make an account on the website. I love this story!! And I love Emily/ Sophie/ Sophia. I like how it's not just a "I'm a wallflower a Wotter needs to save me!!" story. I think Sophia sells herself short but she has so much strength. And I can't wait for this story to progress. If you leave this story too lon unupdated, I'll probably make an account just to hound you everyday for an update. Anyway awesome beginning!! Can't wait for more. :)

Author's Response: Thank you so much! Your review means a lot to me!!:) I've already got a lot of chapters written, over 12,000 words worth so you have nothing to worry about!
You are officially one of my favourite people:)

3rd June 2013:
I really like this story and love the idea of it. I think she'll be a great head girl. Please say she does have one friend!! Maybe one of the guys in Hufflepuff or a slytherin or ravenclaw- hopefully not one of the wotters. Anyway loved it want more and have faved it.10/10

Author's Response: Thank you lots and lots!!:) Of course she has friends, its just a personality thing that prevents her from recognising that!:) Elise, the first year, will play a big role, and a girl in Sophia's year will too!
