Review #2, by Strings Learning What They Are

20th October 2011:
I like having Americans in Hogwarts. That British accent could get a bit old, you know? ;) But, I was wondering, don't Americans have their own school? That could be very fun, hearing about that kind of school. Or maybe there is one and you're sending them to Hogwarts on purpose, maybe they had a British parent and they got saved a place?

I would love to hear little stories about the "before" period. Before finding out they were wizards. Like a chapter or even flashbacks. It's most of their lives, and it feels to me that before you tell us about a big change, we have to feel the silence that comes before it. Otherwise, how would we FEEL it's a huge change? We would know, because you told us in a few lines. But this is what literature for - feeling things rather than knowing. (For example - ‘That Weird Girl’ - it's heartbreaking. Or could be if given the right background, see what I mean?) Also I'm very interested to know what happened to their parents? (I know fitting it all into the first chapter is impossible, and shouldn't happen, I'm just pointing out things that made me curious)

The way they treated their letters, finding out they were wizards... I don't know how I feel about it. It's usually a HUGE deal. Remember Harry? Or even Lily and Snape (who knew he was a wizard)?

I assume you did mentioned they were excited - maybe it's just not enough. I'm not saying you should bore yourself to death writing the same thing in different words, just give more real life examples, scenes from their lives.

It flows nicely - I like that one can tell that the main characters are kids. Which is very important! Many let their kid characters act like 16 year olds. It's fun how it's so straight forward.
Also, word count cannot be any measure to story quality.

I did like it, and I'm curious about the next chapters :) (well I guess you can tell that from all of my questions...)
Keep it up! I love how you're so enthusiastic about it all. That is the most important thing. (by the way, the 510 is NOT my rating, I just left it as it was)

Author's Response: Yay! I like this analysis of it! There will be a reason for them going to Hogwarts instead of an American school (I just can't reveal it ;) though it might be something like you said). I guess this is just the introductory chapter, and more of their background will be revealed soonish.
I do sorta agree with the way they received and reacted to their letters. It might just be the shock of it that was exciting or the fact that they are American (I guess we can have that big of a fascination with magic that we would willingly jump right in.)
I've gotten a lot of comments about how my writing tends to be kinda straightforward, I like that though, the bluntness of it can be fun. :D
Anyway, thank you so much for the review, it's given me a lot of good stuff to think about! And I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll do my best to keep it updated steadily. Thanks! :D
