I honestly feel like this isnt really a oneshot. I feel like this is simply a summary or maybe prologue of a larger story. It'd make a really good one at that, if not a bit cliche. Your writing is very solid, but it's a choppy and doesn't really flow. I would recommend lengthening what you're trying to say and adding more descriptions in. The descriptions you do have however, I liked. You "showed, not told" very well.
