Review #1, by TheGoldenKneazle The Refusal

27th April 2011:
Hi there,

Oh my gosh, this has got to be one of the most powerful pieces I've read since ... ever. The whole plot of this first chapter really grips a hold of you, and the torture Celeste goes through is described so powerfully you just have to read on :O
It was a really poweful moment at the start, when she refuses to kill the muggle boy, but we end up suffering along with Celeste when Lucius disowns her, and when she calls out for her friends, because she is so desperate and it really pierces you - I just wanted to save her so bad.

The pairs in the descriptions worked really well in emphasising everything, bringing it all together (stay and wait; wait for it to happen, wait to die; nothing happening, nothing going) because it showed how everything was cause and effect with her... so what will be the long-term effects of what Celeste has set off?

Celeste's character was pretty much thrown in at the deep end, because we only have time to work out that she is being extremely brave in not killing the boy before she is put under torture. It hits you so powerfully when she wants to die, because she gave everything for that boy, but she didn't even know him, and he was probably killed anyway :'(

This was such a powerful piece, and I'd love to see where you take it - 10/10!

Author's Response: Oh my gosh, this has got to be one of the most amazing reviews I have ever received. *Squee*!!! I was really going for powerful, and attention grabbing and I'm glad to know that I achieved that. I know I love reading pieces like this with the drama, and where your heart really goes out to the character and you're hanging on every line, and it's also really enjoyable to write.

It's a little hard to piece together the rest of her character though, because she did truly believe that she was better than mudbloods and blood-traitors, so she's very complex and a little hard to get down in words. (This comes out more in the next chapter)

Just a little sneak peak (for your amazing review), the boy actually wasn't killed, but when I was writing it I contemplated adding in an older brother that was there and was going to be forced to watch his younger bother be murdered. This would have added to it because he would have understood what Celeste was giving up by not killing his brother, and he would have been torn between seeing her tortured or her giving in and killing his brother. I feel like it might have made it even more powerful, but it would have just complicated the plot so I left him out.

Thanks so much for the review, I'm going to go work on the second chapter now! =]
