Review #1, by nott theodore The Orphanage

Hi there!

This was a really enjoyable and original story to read! I love minor characters and it's always fascinating to think of Voldemort as Tom Riddle, the lonely child brought up in an orphanage, so I thought this was an interesting take on the story. I've certainly never seen anything written from Mrs Cole's point of view before now, and I really enjoyed it.

I think your characterisation of Mrs Cole was really good - you used the few things that we know about her from canon, but expanded on them and made her your own. I really liked the way that she simply denied the possibility of a child talking to animals and all the other things that Tom was doing - she was almost like the Dursleys in that way, and it's a great reminder that as a Muggle, she'd have no understanding (even less than Petunia) about Tom's world.

The way that she worried and thought about all the things Tom had done was quite chilling. I've never thought before how worrying it must have been for those who worked in the orphanage to know that Tom was somehow connected to events that made the children unhappy, but that they had no power to stop it, or even find out what it was.

A great one-shot, and I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks!

Sian :)

Review #2, by Pretense Of Perfection The Orphanage

Hello there!

This is a super interesting story, and I really like how you used an obscure character. I'd never really thought about Tom's muggle caretakers in the orphanage much, but this made me sit and think, that's for sure!

I really liked the ending, about how Mrs. Cole felt wrong for wishing that someone would come and take Tom away. Her compassion and kind nature really show through, as she only wants this because she wants what is best for the children as a whole.

I would've maybe liked to see more about the non-canon things Tom did in the orphanage, as I'm sure he probably did creepy and bizarre things all the time, but given the word limit, I think you did the story incredible justice just as it is. Reading this from Tom's POV would be super interesting as well, have you ever thought of maybe doing a companion story to this? I'd definitely read it.

I like how Mrs. Cole notices all these little nuances that Tom gives off, like his unsettling smile, and not crying like normal children do. She's definitely in denial in the beginning, but I think as the story progresses she realizes that maybe he really is doing these things, even if it's only in the back of her mind and she won't allow those thoughts to really come forth.

I didn't notice any spelling or grammar errors, so great job there. Keep up the good work!!

Seeing as I love love minor characters I just had to read this. This is a character I never read before about. Also I love the fact it also is abot Tom Riddle she sort of raised him so itís great to see what she thinks about him. If she knew what he had became it wouldnít be very suprising she thinks somethings off about him. You used your 500 words wisely. Great job!

Author's Response: Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is a very good one-shot! I don't think anyone's ever taken Mrs. Cole's view before and you've done it very well. I think you've got her personality just right, as someone who is generally caring and good-doing, but something about Tom unsettles her. Not surprising, as he grows up to be Voldemort.

It's also good how you've set it just before Dumbledore arrives. It's a bit short, but it works this way, as a train of thought, as JK often does. It has a sort of dark feel to it that makes you sorry for Mrs. Cole and puts a chill in your spine when you think of Tom. Great work, well done.

Author's Response: Thank you for the very good review, I really appreciate everything you said. I would have loved to have made it longer actually, maybe even expanded the idea, but like you said it works at this length, if you noticed, its exactly 500 words, for a challenge:)

Like all your stories I enjoyed it! I like how you made Tom sound, as if he already was a menace and you made the women sound just like I would have pictured her.

10/10

Author's Response: Thanks Hanny.
