You have a very nice start here; there is a lot of potential for this story and it's characters. Just be sure to give your characters and your writing the time it deserves. I think these characters have the potential to develop beautifully, but take your time doing so. But, as an opening chapter, this does exactly what it should. It sets the scene and introduces the characters well! Keep writing!
