This makes complete sense... in Phoenix, which was released after this... we learn the full prophesy. No one but Harry and Dumbledore know it. So this story is spot-on.

This is a typical Fudge disaster of an investigation. He suspects only the people who would never do it.

Snape, though hating Harry because he looks too much like James, is still not the kind who would suddenly do this.

Anyway, very good portrayal of Cornelius Fudge.
