|Review:||Secret Santa says:|
Hello there! I am your supremely secret santa from Slytherin (so much slimy alliteration) and here with your first gift! I'm going to try and stay anonymous if possible, though I doubt that will possibly last long. :P
So I've read all and reviewed some of the other chapters of this story and this chapter really does not disappoint. I don't think it was filler- you did a good job of building on these characters' relationships and dynamics which is really important and I felt like I really got to know Ellie better with her morning routine and everything. She really is so organized, it scares me a little. :P But I loved hearing about her routine and how it affects her day, such as the fact that she isn't very close with her dormmates, and how cool her PJs seem. :P
Ellie's quirkiness and slight social-awkwardness came through really well here without being over the top. I loved how she doesn't like others to know about her bathroom routines - perfectly understandable, and I'm glad you addressed bathroom situations at Hogwarts since all we know from canon is how the prefects have a swimming pool to bathe in and Myrtle haunts a toilet. So this helped make your image of Hogwarts even more realistic. :) And I giggled during the conversation with Scorpius and how Ellie was wondering about how to properly pat him on the arm in a comforting way, and how gestures which feel natural to most people feel strange to her. To be fair I guess she has been dealing with a lot of ghosts who can't be touched or interacted with physically throughout her life! :P I also liked the little detail about how she likes to read about the important moments in people's lives in the paper, it showed her more thoughtful and perceptive side.
Rose and Scorpius seem very sweet as well, and clearly have a good thing going on. I thought it was funny how they seemed so close at breakfast, but then Scorpius is so coy and shy about getting relationship advice from Ellie. And I giggled when Ellie was seeing the big picture, like where they were going to go on a post-retirement adventure. Her voice is so funny but so effortless and natural, and I really enjoy reading her sassiness and humour. It's brilliantly done. :)
I hate plants and dirt too!! Haha Ellie really brought to life my feelings about plants here - necessary, but I'd rather not be around them, though I suspect poisonous and carnivorous plants are less boring and more dangerous than the average plant that I seem to encounter. This line: Even the Egyptians knew that one couldn’t grow crops in gold. That’s why they’d worshipped dung beetle, as gross as insects combined with organic waste was. Made me laugh a lot, and showed how Ellie's wandering mind can be quite snarky and witty.
This was an awesome chapter and I'm looking forward to the next one- if you have it up before the queue closure I might even be able to review it as Secret Santa instead of beneath my normal hpff identity, hehe. :P Expect some more gifts in the days to come, and keep an eye on your MTA page! :)
Author's Response: Hello Secret Santa! You're doing a far better job than me of being secretive, that's for sure! And I love the alliteration - fantabulously fantastic!
I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was a difficult one to write because I had to split it in half, and I hate doing that to chapters. Ellie is scarily organised, that is true, and I'm glad that you enjoyed this little insight into the way she works. And her PJs are awesome - more on them next chapter!
The bathrooms at Hogwarts bug me immensely! Like, we know they have toilets that they can use during the day, but I assume that they have bathrooms in their dormitories. I can't imagine the students traipsing through the halls in their towels or whatever! And what if you need to pee at night? You can't hold it in until morning when curfew is lifted, for sure!
Yes, the fact that Ellie deals with people who aren't corporeal is part of the reason why she isn't good with physical contact, but I don't think anyone at her home is particularly touchy-feely, but I suspect that Ellie over-analyses the situation!
I ship Rose and Scorpius harder than the main pairing in this story - as does Ellie. They are so adorable together, I just can't even with them. Writing them together puts me in the greatest mood!
Everything I touch dies, so I avoid plants for their protection. Although, if I ever got the chance to play with dangerous and carnivorous plants, I wouldn't hesitate to get in there - maybe it gets old after you've been at Hogwarts for that long?
Thanks so much for this fantabulous present Oh Great Secret Santa!
