OMG!!! You're evil!! I did not see that coming at all. This was such a well written chapter and I thought he was just building up to telling her he would be a spy and she'd worry about how dangerous that would be and then this! Their first kiss...and their last. Sob!

Seriously, you did an awesome job of ratcheting up the tension. I could really feel all Beth's emotions in this chapter.

I liked these bits:

" It was a dizzying feeling – it wasn’t parental affection, it wasn’t friendship. Was there a name for this?"

"I don’t want to be the person I am when you’re not here –“ LOVED that one! It's so true!

"But all she could make sense of was Severus’s voice, already fading in her memory, already starting to grow less familiar." Also so true... and so heartbreaking! I want to say, "Beth, you have to practice hearing it at least every half hour and still it slips away..."

So, I hate you right now. ;-) But I will be back! They will get back together, won't they?

Author's Response: Ah, I'm sorry! ♥ Although I'm actually quite glad that I was able to surprise you like that, as odd as that sounds -- I obviously knew where things were going, and for some reason I was quite paranoid that other readers would suspect. :P

The emotions were a huge part of what was carrying this chapter, and hearing that you think I did a good job really makes me feel pretty awesome. That line you quoted, too, Beth's line about not wanting to be the person she is when Severus isn't around -- that's one of my favorites! In a heartbreaking way, but that's really how I like my romance. And thus I read and write it like that!

You are probably well within your rights to hate me. :3 But thank you for reviewing all the same! I make no promises as to their future... but I also won't deny that things work out for them.
