This chapter was a little bit hard for me to read, for reasons that are a compliment to you. :-) The snobbery of Beth's parents remind me of my dad. (I talk to him about as frequently as Beth does her parents. I know that if I told him my new boyfriend was a carpenter/handyman -- leaving out the detail of "while he goes to law school" -- my dad would totally freak out! See?)

Anyway, you did a great job of making the whole scene and the characters believable and relatable even though they are witches and wizards on opposite sides of a blood feud.

The little details that you are so good at add to this. I loved Beth knocking over the copy of Nature's Nobility (I would do this!) and Beth's mother serving tea without giving her ex a cup (though my mom is waaay too nice to do that!).

Author's Response: I'm glad that you enjoyed this chapter, even though it was a bit hard for you to read. My own parents are still happily (as far as I'm aware) married, and so a lot of what Beth's dealing with is based on conjecture and observation, but nothing personal. I am glad you can relate to it, even if that relating is not necessarily positive. Parents are pretty good at freaking out! I really am glad that you thought it was well-done, though, and I promise that there shouldn't be too many more chapters in the future dealing with Beth's parents in this sort of manner. :)

I think one of my favorite parts of this chapter is the detail-work! I remember quite clearly where I was when I wrote this; this was done in a Florida hotel bed last summer, when I was heading back from a Harry Potter convention, and I just remember that all the description and whatnot came very naturally, and ended up extending the chapter! Beth knocking over the book's one of my favorites, too. ;)
