Oh dear, Tobias is working late. AGAIN. Story of his life. 'I don't think anyone stands on ceremony around here as much as you do, Tobias.' Oh Toby. He's so proper.
Dinner with Gabe's parents. HMM. This is new. As Tobias says. Oh, I love that Gabe's letting Toby know about the leaked memo and stuff, even though he himself doesn't care a JOT. It seems kind of new, for Gabe to be doing something like that. I guess that's partly because it's Toby, and Gabe and Toby have never been the closest of the four. NAWWW. He's changing.
Okay, the Doyles. Finally. Little bit excited for this bit, given that we've never seen them before. BEYOND intrigued right now, and if this scene leaves me with even MORE questions I'll be setting the ninjas on YOU.
My word, Doyle senior is utterly vile. A less strong-willed woman than Jen would utterly collapse if faced with an evening with him! She's doing well to hold her own. Ah, and Gabe's motives become clear. Clever, very clever. Although I'm not sure if I like the idea of him having to suck up to his father, effectively. It's a brave move. And an interesting one, because he doesn't have to do this at all. He clearly hates his father, and doesn't have to work for him, but he is anyway. And he wants to do Good Things. God I love him now.
And finally, we see why he is how he is. And I LOVE that Jen is the first one to see that side of him, and I can't quite believe that she wasn't meant to be with Gabe originally because they are so, so perfect for each other, and I just love their storyline. And Gabe's guilt at hiding all this from his friends ... oh, bless him. The ending of this chapter is utterly beautiful. One of my favourite chapters so far EVER from you, I think, because FINALLY, after so long, we get to see what Gabe's been hiding. Ninjas not required. BIG LOVE.
Author's Response: Toby is such a fusspot, bless him. And he shall forever be. Then again, working late saved his life in the war! That excuses everything. It IS new for Gabe to be making a gesture like this, for something that doesn't affect him, and for Tobias. Would you believe that this is the VERY FIRST TIME Toby and Gabe have had a scene together with nobody else present? I was surprised myself when I realised this! Least close of the four indeed.
Yess, dinner. Don't worry, no ninjas are necessary, though there will be more explanations and details forthcoming anyway! And yes, Doyle senior is deeply, deeply unpleasant. Jen holds her own, as is expected, with poise, class, and courtesy. But certainly there will be - fallout? Exploration? Consequences? To Gabe wanting to use his father. It won't just be taken point blank.
This is why this is one of my own favourite chapters. For revealing things that were up my sleeve, just it was never the time before now to bring them out. For yes, just how accidentally perfect Gabe and Jen are, never clearer than in this chapter (and will continue to be so). So I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, it was huge for me in the writing! Thanks for reviewing!
