Review:Violet Gryfindor says:
Needless to say, this is another fabulous chapter, one that, as I hoped, brought together the two strands of the plot, but the method by which you did so was even more interesting than I'd anticipated. The chapter kept up a quick pace and included a lot of material, working to build suspense and provide wonderful character development. As always, it's flawlessly written, feeling just like canon.

I really admire your portrayal of Lily - she can be a very difficult character to write, but you give her both realism and depth, not to mention a lot of humanity. Her reactions to the news of Karen's death and of the butterflies were perfectly done - there's definitely something symbolic in the scene with the butterflies, perhaps reflecting Lily's own feelings of entrapment? Or a general dislike of causing pain to others? Your portrayal of McGonagall in that scene was equally perfect - I thought it fantastic how she was so straight-forward and honest to the students about what was going on around them. She wants to keep them safe, and does so in the most practical manner possible.

I love the hint that Slughorn set up Lily and Regulus so that they would have to get to know one another. Lily's comment that Slughorn was trying to create some great potions prodigy was hilarious! I can definitely see him trying to use eugenics to create himself the perfect student, and it shows how little he cares for blood purity if he pairs Lily with a Black - it's the talent that means most to Slughorn, and one could be from the best of families without catching his eye due to a lack of talent. This has reminded me how complicated Slughorn's character actually is - he's very Slytherin, but in a very different way from the Death Eaters. It's so easy to put all Slytherins in the same box, especially thanks to way the books are written mostly from Harry's point of view, but most of them would be like Slughorn (and Regulus) - the Death Eaters are extremists.

I can see how the plot is starting to reflect the story summary with the ending of this chapter - how both of them have a connection on "the other side" that they desperately want to keep up, but know it's impossible due to the war. Regulus's affection for Sirius almost heartwrenching, more so than Lily's for Snape, I think. Regulus knows what she doesn't: that Snape is in love with her. But then again, Regulus doesn't know anything about their past friendship. I can see all this lack of knowledge causing a lot of problems for them - I can only hope that it's not too much of a mess (though I want it to be for the sake of an exciting plot - cruelty to characters is an author's daily crime :P).

I'll stop rambling now. *hides* This is a fantastic story and I'm very sad that there's no more of it to read. I'll definitely be on the lookout for an update - it's very original in its plot and portrayal of the Marauder era, and the writing is of the highest quality. ^_^

Author's Response: Hello again! As always, thank you!

Oh, good! I was a little worried about pacing with such a long chapter (aren't we always trading one challenge for another?) but it's excellent to see that it still worked okay.

Gosh, you know me -- I love Lily. Even apart from Snily, I think at times I'm just as infatuated with her as Severus himself is. It's great that the Transfiguration scene, as emotional as it was, worked for you. I tried to tap into Lily's goodness with her horror at such a senseless death and her subsequent distaste for the way the students used the butterflies for their own purposes. Even though the butterflies go unharmed, sweet Lily just can't stand to see anyone in pain. (Unless, of course, the person has harmed her in an atrocious way. She can't be perfect.) I'm also glad that I did McGonagall well, because I know you love her and she was fairly new for me. Still, I very much enjoyed working with her.

I think Slughorn sees something "special" in Lily, too, and you're right that he seems to focus on the best qualities in every person. I think this preoccupation with the advantage does make him very Slytherin, but you're right, it's in a different way than the traditional thirst for domination we see with the Death Eaters. I think it fits in well with his profession -- you want the best ingredients and the most precise combination to achieve the perfect potion. His quirks are endearing, and I always enjoy writing him in this story.

Yep, you've got it -- they're going to need one another, and then realize just how much is in the way of their budding friendship. I do feel quite awful for Regulus, but then I write a bit of Snily and revert back to my passion for that. It's an emotional roller-coaster on my end, and I want them both to work out so badly, but you'll just have to wait and see!

I'm flattered as always, because you know I strive for quality work and original plot, and I promise an update is coming. Curse you, RL!

Thanks again, Susan. I love seeing these.

-Amanda
