Aw, this was a cute and beautiful little story! What a joy to read. :-) I am always impressed at how distinctive you can make your characters in different ways. You have a loud, unusual protagonist (Rose in the Midnight stories), but you have a cast of softer (for lack of a better word) characters too. So often it seems like authors on this site give their characters "personality" by making them loud and weird. It gets a bit on my nerves after a while. I think it takes a lot more ability to make a softer character seem alive and strong.

There was a certain aspect to Hattie here in this chapter that reminded me of the way RonsGirlFriday writes Audrey in one of her stories, Irrational, which I think you have also read.

I remember that earlier, Hattie was a bit hesitant about her mother marrying a Muggle, but it was really neat to see her here with her new step-brother. It seems that she is really getting on with her new family, and it was probably nice for her to have another young person to talk to--especially one where she can, to some degree, forget about all the danger in the Wizarding World for a few moments and concentrate on enjoying Muggle cafes and the like.

Also, that was a fun ending with Edwin. Whenever he appeared at first, I suspected he might be a wizard, only possibly a bad one. Then I became convinced he really was just Jack's Muggle childhood friend. Then he really was a wizard after all! I think a Hufflepuff is probably a good fit for Hattie too, to get all stereotypical here.

Anyway, as I said, I enjoyed this chapter very much.

Author's Response: The loud and weird characters, I know exactly what you mean. They get on my nerves too ;) It is harder to get a quieter personality across effectively, but I think they're more common than the larger-than-life types. Thank you :)

I looove RonsGirlFriday! She's fantastic, and I especially love Irrational. So cute. Hattie did start out quite afraid of the whole step-family of Muggles issue, with what people would say and her own prejudices, but she has adjusted well since she's a good person at heart, and she is open to adding to her family, as it were.

I couldn't resist giving Hattie someone awesome ;) She's one of my favorite characters and seemed underappreciated, so I liked letting her find somebody who sees her as desirable. Mostly they're like "Hattie's a good egg", but not Edwin.
