I hate that it's so easy for the Ministry to get away with awful stuff like that. And yet it's really very plausible from what JKR told us in canon - I always wondered why Hermione picked house elf rights to agonise over when she'd already been exposed to the issue of werewolf rights. I mean, sure, house elf rights is a worthy cause and all, but it's something that no one really cares about and which the elves themselves don't want halp with. Whereas werewolf rights - Hermione actually could have made a difference there.

I've thought the same thing about Hermione and her house elf obsession. I'm kind of with Ron on that. The house elves are perfectly happy the way things are. Pass laws so that they aren't outright abused but don't stress them out by shoving clothes off on them instead. Fight for werewolves instead. But then it would have been SPWW which doesn't have the same ring as SPEW.
