I had a dream about a burning house

You were stuck inside, I couldn’t get you out

I laid beside you and pulled you close

And the two of us went up in smoke

Her dreams were full of fire and smoke. A heaviness filled her lungs and she woke up gasping. The dream was never ending and never changing. It did not matter how many times she woke up each night because of it, she would always fall back in. The long dark hair of her companion, sprawled on the floor in between the most vicious of the flames. Part of her would tell her to leave, let him go; the other half, the half that always won, would was telling her to stay, holding him. She wiped her eyes, not realizing that the tears had started to fall, that she was sobbing as she awoke from the only nightmare, only dream she ever had anymore.

She stood, walking around her small London apartment, her hand grazing against the wall in the darkness. A small hallway led to a tiny kitchen, dishes piled up and bills lay ascue on the table. She opened the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water and sitting at the the table. She placed the bottle in front of her, looking straight ahead. His face haunted her daydreams, and her nightmares. There was no escaping him for her. There were too many emotions when she thought about him, too many emotions when she didn’t. There was too much lose for her. She sat at her kitchen table, staring off, thinking back. Sipping the cold water and hoping to free herself of the heat in her brain.

Love isn’t all that it seems I did you wrong

I’ll stay here with you until this dream is gone

“You can’t make this better Sirius!” Tears were streaming down her cheeks, her voice was loud, but the shakiness was showing her lose of control. Sirius was holding a beer, cigarette loose between his fingers. He was as calm as he always was, it bothered her.

“You aren’t going to be able to magically fix what is happening with your friends! You aren’t going to fix it by drinking, by smoking.” She was still screaming, she threw a pillow at him. She couldn’t handle this anymore. She found herself moving around the apartment they shared, grabbing things she could that would let her get through the next couple of days, throwing them in a bag she looked back at him. Her heart sunk, but she shook herself out of her remorse.

“You can’t always be the hero.” She opened the door and walked out, no sounds followed her. She brought herself to the nearest non-muggle space, waiting for the Night bus, crying as she sat along the curb.

I’ve been sleepwalking, been wandering all night

Trying to take what’s lost and broken and make it right

I’ve been sleepwalking too close to the fire

But it’s the only place that I can hold you tight

In this burning house

She had lived with Remus for a while, the only place she could think of running since Lily and James were in hiding. Remus was nice, he was always nice, but she would tell she was getting on his nerves. Sirius didn’t stop by the way he used to, and Remus hated being in the middle of their fights. One day she finally declared she was moving, leaving to live on her own. Remus was concerned, he always fought for them to talk, to make up, but it never worked.

Once alone she found herself having these nightmares, were she would hope he would come back. Both were too stubborn to tell the other they were wrong. They would barely look at each other at Order meetings. Fed up with the tension, Remus would avoid sitting by either of them, without James and Lily things were the same. Things were harder on all of them. She would leave right away, hiding back in her flat in London, where she would watch muggle television.

See you at a party and you look the same

I could take you back but people don’t ever change

Wish that we could go back in time

I’d be the one you thought you’d find

Dumbledore held a holiday party for the Order. Elizabeth sat in the corner, avoiding most people’s eyes and drinking her own beer. She tried to prepare herself, knowing he would show up with some other girl, or at least flirt with everyone at the party. His long hair was perfect as it always was, his dark jeans and shirt held perfectly to his body. Elizabeth couldn’t handle the overwhelming feeling of wanting to run up to him, tell him she was sorry, but she knew it wouldn’t happen. Nothing would change between them, even when she wished it could.

He sauntered around, holding a beer and talking to every girl who wasn’t preoccupied with other boy. Remus eventually found her, making as much small talk as he comfortably could. Elizabeth finally realized that it wasn’t going to work, simply apparating away and locking herself back up at home.

Love isn’t all that it seems I did you wrong

I’ll stay here with you until this dream is gone

The night of the Christmas party is when the nightmares starting to get worse, they all weren’t about him burning. Somewhere about him dying in a battle, leaving her standing speechless and falling to the Death Eaters as well. She dreamt of him coming back, only to fall tragically to his death in her arms. She couldn’t handle the pain, finding herself apparating to the doorstep of their old residence, standing, ready to knock before she was greeted by Remus. Remus took her arm, bringing her to his own home where he offered her tea and the couch. She took both gratefully, unsure of how to continue with this pain.

The next year seemed to move by in snapshots, between visiting the Potters and playing with their son, and fighting when she could, Elizabeth slept minimally. She worked with the power of caffeine and some held out hope that things would get easier. Moving through the motions of war, and the motions of the lost love. She tried to talk to him, holding small talk when they both showed up too early to a meeting. There was nothing to say, they talked about Harry mostly, how happy of a baby he was, how much he smiled when they visited. Others soon showed up, saving them from their awkward misery.

She was approaching Godric’s Hallow when she saw the flash of green. A scream caught in her throat, and she was barely able to apparate away. She made it to her old residence, finding herself pounding on the door until she was hitting Sirius in the chest. The words barely left her mouth before she started to sob. He brought her inside, holding her close and as sobbed out what she had seen. Sirius was quick to rely the message, Remus showed up shortly after. All three seemed to be crying, Peter nowhere in sight.

They all managed to sleep, within feet of each other, all still silently crying. The banging on the door woke them up. Men rushing in and grabbing Sirius. Remus and Elizabeth found themselves yelling, they were wrong, he didn’t do it. Everything happened so quickly, Remus taking her away, them sitting in his flat. Hurt, crying lost, no one knowing what had just happened. That night the dreams grew darker, the fire in her dreams grew bigger, and no matter what she couldn’t save her friends.

The flames are getting bigger now

In this burning house

I can hold on to you somehow

In this burning house

Oh, and I don’t wanna wake up

In this burning house

She went through the motions, getting up from the table when the water was gone. Tucking herself back in bed, bringing the covers up under her chin. Her eyes closed quicker than she was used to, her heart was beating faster and she felt herself falling into the flames. She curled herself up next to the broken figure, holding him close as the flames gathered around them. She couldn’t let go, she never wanted to let go, but in the end she always woke up missing him. A deep pain that never weakened. The orange heat felt like it was real, and she always woke up panting, sweating, swearing. She never could escape the deep flames that engulfed their love, and that’s what kept her up at night.
