Chapter 1

Lily Evans was sitting at the table in her boyfriend’s back garden. The heat was beating down on her bare shoulders and she contemplated diving into the pool that was just a few feet away. However, the fact that James and his best friends were having a cannonball competition was somewhat off putting. She took a sip of the iced pumpkin juice in front of her and sighed contentedly. She loved watching James mess about. So often recently he seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. With the shadow of this war looming over them, even at school, he seemed to think he had to fix the world and protect everyone in it.

She smiled as Sirius took a run at him and the pair of them toppled into the pool in a tangle of limbs and black hair, laughing hysterically. It was nice to see him relax before they all began their future in earnest. They had not long graduated from Hogwarts and were all about to join the Order and fight Voldemort. She felt like an icy shadow was being cast over her as the thought of it crossed her mind. She shivered involuntarily.

“Cold, beautiful lady?” James’ voice broke through her thoughts, and she looked up to see him standing in front of her, rubbing his hair with a towel, trying not to splash her. She even found the way he did that entrancing; every movement was so full of life and purpose.

How had she ever hated him, when now she couldn’t even imagine seeing anyone else? He grinned at her, waiting for her to answer.

“I’m fine.” She replied, smiling. “Who won the competition?”

“Padfoot. But he cheated.”

“Did not!” Sirius called over. James rolled his eyes, and pulled a chair over next to hers, putting his arm around her. He smelt of something earthy and woody that she loved. She turned her head so that her face was buried in the curve of his neck, and inhaled slightly, letting it wash over her.

“You ok?” He asked her.

“Yeah, it’s nice seeing you so relaxed.”

“This Order stuff, this war…” He murmured. She reached up and lightly ran her fingers through his messy hair.

“I know.” She said softly. “But it’s worth it.” He looked up at her, and deep into her eyes.

“What are you doing with me, Lily?” She shrugged.

“I realised I didn’t want to be without you, James.”

“But there are hundreds of blokes that would go out with you at the drop of a hat…”

“I don’t want any of those supposed hundreds of blokes, you idiot. I want you. Merlin knows why, but I do.” She smiled at him. He laughed.

“I’m glad.” He said. He leant over and brushed her lips with his.

“OI! No PDA’s!” Sirius shouted from the pool.

“Shut up, Padfoot.” Remus’ voice, uncharacteristically lazy, retorted. Lily leaned forward and deepened the kiss, partly because she couldn’t resist and partly just to wind Sirius up. Eventually, they pulled apart and James grinned at her.

“Want to go inside and cool down?” He asked her. She smiled and stood up, grabbing the kaftan draped over the back of the chair. They walked into the cool dim kitchen that was covered in the remnants of lunch and breakfast as James’ parents were out.

James threw himself onto the sofa in the corner, and she sat next to him. He pulled her legs across his lap. She leant against him contentedly. She wished she could pin point what it was that made her change her mind about him after all these years. There was just something about him she perhaps hadn’t noticed, or had refused to see.

He looked at her attentively, taking in her relaxed demeanour. He thought he had always known that she would cave eventually, and give him a chance. And now she said that she didn’t want anyone else.

He looked down at her again and saw that she was dozing off. He smiled again; she was like a cat, her ability to fall asleep almost anywhere was legendary in Gryffindor House. He tightened his grip around her shoulders and, despite the heat; she snuggled into his chest, smiling softly.

“I Love You James.” She murmured sleepily. He looked down at her, shocked. They hadn’t said that before. He leant down and kissed the top of her head, ecstatic.

When she woke a while later, he couldn’t help grinning at her.

“What?” She asked.

“Nothing.” He replied, trying to stifle his excitement.

What James?” She repeated, exasperated. He often became inexplicably hyperactive and usually she would just let him get on with it. But this time, he had a look in his eye…

“Nothing.” He replied again, still smiling. She picked up a cushion and hit him around the head with it, laughing at his surprised expression. He launched himself at her and began to tickle her, making her squeal with laughter, and continue to smack him. She eventually pulled away, breathless.

“Are you going to tell me what you look so happy about?” She asked.

“You said You Love Me!” He told her, matter of factly.

“I did?” She grinned, knowing full well she had said it before she dozed off. “When?”

“Before you fell asleep.” He told her.

“Huh. I suppose I must do then!” She told him, sliding her arms around his waist, smiling up at him.

“I Love You Too, Lily.” He said softly. She knew then that she really didn’t want anyone else.

There was just Something about him.
