A Fresh Start

*Hermione’s POV*

(Hermione's outfit - )
Hermione Jean Granger woke up to the sunlight streaming in through the window; she was exhausted from the trip down to Hogwarts from Muggle London, where her apartment was. She had reached Hogwarts last night, a storm delaying her arrival, leaving no trace of it this beautiful morning. It was the middle of August and the air was beginning to get chilly, Hermione took a quick hot shower and walked out of the bathroom, still wrapped in her towel and opened up her suitcase and picked out a blue turtleneck sweater and a pair of old blue jeans and a pair of old blue loafers and put them on.
She looked at herself in the full length mirror that stood next to the dresser and reflected back to her days before the war. Her hair had grown out, it was less bushy now and actually had volume of the good kind, her features had gotten softer and more feminine, and her body was just right, she had curves in all the right places and she liked what she saw, even though she never thought that she could. Hermione gazed out the window and looked at the grounds, the Whomping Willow was gone, it had been burnt down during the war, when Hogwarts was attacked. Hogwarts looked the same, with a few additions, there was now another building towards the East and Hermione didn’t get a chance to ask Professor McGonagall what it was for last night when the Professor dropped her off at her dorm. Which reminded her, she had to attend breakfast in the Great Hall at 9:00am, Hermione glanced at the silver watch that her parents had gotten her for her 16thbirthday and saw that it was 9:10,she grabbed her wand off of the dresser and stuck it in the back pocket of her jeans, smiling slightly at the memory of Moody telling them about a wizard who’d gotten his bottom blasted off by keeping his wand in his back pocket. “I’d better hold onto my wand, just in case” she thought and gripped onto it tightly.
She walked out into the Hospital Wing and opened the door out into the corridor, stopping every few feet to talk to the paintings. When she finally reached the Great Hall it was 9:20 and she saw a long table occupied with all the teachers and staff of Hogwarts, there were a couple of new faces and she smiled at them before taking a seat. She grabbed a pitcher of orange juice and was about to pour herself some when the doors opened again and none other than Draco Malfoy walked in. Hermione half expected everyone else to jump up with their wands pointed at him, but surprisingly none of that happened.
Draco seemed completely at ease and actually smiled at everyone and paused to talk to Professor Slughorn, which was when Hermione took in his presence. She noticed that he looked ruggedly handsome and had a very very dashing figure, she imagined he had a fit body underneath the V-neck t-shirt he was wearing. She also noticed that his hair was now slightly less blonde and had actually gotten quite brown and it flopped over his forehead, making him look effortlessly sexy.”Wait, no, this is Malfoy” Hermione thought, “Draco Malfoy can be anything but sexy. Repulsive? Yes. Arsehole? Without a doubt. A prat? Obviously. But sexy was jus-oh my gods, his eyes are so pretty, Oh Merlin, he’s walking over here, dammit, dammit. Hermione pull yourself together.” Hermione looked at Malfoy and he sat down on the bench next to her, flashed her a captivating smile and said “Hullo, I’m Draco Malfoy and you are?"

*Draco’s POV*

( Draco's outfit- )
Draco walked into the Great Hall and saw all his teachers, now colleagues, sitting at the table eating breakfast, he flashed a smile at them and glanced over everyone quickly to see if there were any new faces. He spotted two new faces, one an old man and the other was a beautiful woman with brown hair that fell in soft curls, framing her amazing face, he saw that the woman was staring at him and he smiled to himself, he had always had a way with women. He stopped to talk to Professor Slughorn and glanced up to find the mysterious woman still staring at him, with a dreamy look on her face. He got up and walked over to her, he noticed that she stiffened up a little, he sat down next to her, flashed her one of his best smiles and said “Hullo, I’m Draco Malfoy and you are?”
The lady looked at him with confusion and apprehension written all over her face and she said “Why Malfoy I didn’t think you’d forget me that easily? It’s me. Hermione Granger” She smirked after this because Draco just froze there, this woman couldn’t possibly be Granger, Granger isn’t beautiful, hell she wasn’t even worth looking at, he just stared at her and then he realized that he was being vulnerable and put on a straight face and said “ Nice to see you, Granger “ his voice dripping with sarcasm. He smirked when he saw the confused look on her face, she was probably wondering why he was being mean to her now when he was nice to her before, well, she needn’t worry about it anymore, it wouldn’t happen again. She scoffed and said “Pleasure” before returning back to pouring a glass of orange juice for herself and goes on to eat in silence without so much as a glance his way, which irritated him for some reason, so he chose to start up a conversation with his good friend and colleague Professor Greengrass, more commonly known as Astoria Greengrass, the girl who his parents expected him to marry.
She was a beautiful woman, with straight ebony hair that she kept up in a bun, letting a few tendrils fall onto her face. She always maintained her posture with that of grace, she had clear fair skin and luscious cherry red lips, she was perfect. His parents, as well as hers wanted them to get married, they were ideal for each other, she was of pureblood status, she was knowledgeable and well read. The Greengrass’s were high up in the wizarding world and Draco was expected to court her the traditional way. They had been seeing each other for a month now and a year or so later he would be expected to propose to her and they would be married. Draco knew he was a lucky man, Astoria was quite the catch, he was listening to her going on about something his mother had told her when he heard Granger’s voice next to him. “Yes Professor Flitwick, I’m here to help out Madam Pomfrey, I’ll be here for a full term because my Healer Training Program begins in February and this will be a good way to gain experience for when I become a Healer. Yes, I’ll keep working here after the program starts but only part time.” Draco scoffed at her nonchalant tone, at which she turned around and said “Have you got a problem with that Malfoy?” Draco sneered at her and said “None other than the fact that the kids will probably do their best not to fall sick so that they don’t have to see your filthy face around.” “At least I have a better chance of healing them, you blithering idiot” She retorted and she got up and walked out in a huff.
As she did so, Draco got a nice view of her rear end and he couldn’t help but admire at how gracefully her hips were swaying and he was in a world of possibilities, being brought back only when hearing Astoria call his name out a couple of times. He glanced back to see if Granger was gone before going back to whatever it was that Astoria had been telling him.”So your mother said that it would be nice if you and me could go down to the Malfoy Manor for dinner the day before school starts, is that okay with you Draco?” Tori said. “ Um yeah okay, did you send her an owl, or should I do it?” Draco asked. “That’s okay hun, I already sent her a letter saying we would” Astoria smiled sweetly, gave him a peck on the cheek and left the hall. He turned around to watch her go and saw that all the teachers were smiling at the two of them. Draco blushed slightly and was about to walk out as well when Professor McGonagall cleared her throat and said “Mr. Malfoy, I hope you and Ms. Greengrass understand that no display of affection is allowed in front of the students” Draco blushed furiously this time and nodded his head in reply and walked out of the Great Hall as quick as he could.

A/N : Um hi, this is our first fan fiction and um yeah it's still a work in progress, if you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to mention so in the comments and um yeah please like it and all that :3 thanks :)

Chapter 2: Chapter 3
[Printer Friendly Version of This Chapter]

*Draco's POV*

Draco spent the rest of the month holed up away in his chambers, researching, about all the creatures known to mankind. He kept going back to the moment, when his father had died,in his room,in the Malfoy Manor, dying of a curse that slowly sucked out the life essence out of you. When Voldemort finally died, and Bellatrix found out that Narcissa had lied about Harry's death so as to save Malfoy, she had attempted to cast a curse on Narcissa, but Lucius, surprisingly jumped forward and took the full blast of the curse himself.

The next 3 months after the war,Lucius was bedridden and didn't speak much sense, but with his dying breath he said "It's in the stars Draco,it's in the stars! The monster will destroy everything that will stand in its way,you must stop it Draco, you must, you must..The Dark Lord.."

But what did he mean,Draco checked every book about astrology, divination and he didn't see anything related to the Dark Lord.Draco banged his fist on the table in frustration, just as Astoria walked into the room in a stunning emerald green knee length gown, with a sweetheart neckline and a simple gold chain that Draco had gifted her once. Her hair was swept up into a side bun and she looked absolutely stunning. "Draco dear, why aren't you dressed yet,we have to be at the Manor in 15 minutes" she said. "Oh yes,uh,gimme a minute,I'll just put this away, and get dressed" Draco said and whisked his wand and made all the books and scrolls vanish into a locked safe.He took a quick shower and put on a white shirt along with a grey waistcoat and slacks.Together Astoria and Draco exited the room and walked into Professor McGonagall's head office, where they Floo'd to the Malfoy Manor.

"Astoria dear,it's so good to see you" Narcissa exclaimed. "Hello mother,it's wonderful to see you too" Draco said in a droll tone. "Yes yes hello, come on,you two are already late, and I'm famished.Come this way dear" Narcissa Malfoy said, ushering Astoria along, while calling for Peachy the house elf,to set the food on the table.
Draco split from the duo and walked inside the library,to see if there were any books that could help, amongst the Dark arts section,he saw a book about Horcruxes, 'Hmm,well that's interesting,Voldy sure was all about the horcruxes' Draco picked up the book and with a flick of his wand, shrinked it and deftly put it in his pocket. He then walked into the dining room and sat down to eat, while his mother went on about him and Astoria and how she was expecting a wedding soon and some grandchildren.

*Hermione's POV*

The rest of the month passed by in a lazy haze, Blaise and Hermione had frequent picnics by the lake, Hermione helped Blaise prepare for his classes, making notes and such, while Blaise helped her research different ailments that would come in handy for myHealer Training Program. They hardly saw much of Malfoy and Greengrass, which was probably for the best,as Hermione didn't think Malfoy had still forgiven her about the pancakes.

Blaise was a very nice companion and there was never a dull moment with him,it was as though the war had never happened, and they'd known each other their whole lives. His knowledge of Ancient Runes enthralled her and his tales of his times with Sir Arbuckle kept Hermione entertained all throughout the picnics.

Soon it was the the 31st of August and it was time for Blaise and Hermione to help the staff at Hogwarts prepare for the incoming flock of students that would soon grace the hallways of Hogwarts."Ms.Granger,dear,have you seen Mr.Malfoy anywhere?" Professor McGonagall asked.Hermione looked around and said "Well no Professor, come to think of it,I haven't seen him all month." "Hmm,well thank you dear" Professor McGonagall said and whisked away."Draco must be off somewhere with Astoria" Blaise said," Oh wait,I think they were going out for dinner at the Manor" Hermione recalled. "Well anyway, what's it to us?" Blaise smiled and carried on with his task.Hermione looked around the room and smiled as she reminisced about all the good and bad times in this great big hall, and she thought of all the brave souls that had sacrificed their lives for the greater good,as Dumbledore would have called it.

Chapter 2-People change, it’s the memories that don’t.

*Hermione POV*

( Blaise's outfit - )

Hermione turned the corner and walked towards her dorm, still fuming about the exchange her and Malfoy had just had. She had almost reached her dorm when she bumped into a tall, dark and handsome stranger, who stumbled back blindly and hit his head on the cold stone wall. Hermione got up and got a good look at the poor fellow, he was quite handsome, with dark brown, almost black hair slicked back almost nonchalantly and his eyes which were a dark brown, with a hint of hazel were gazing around wildly so as to see who his attacker was.

"Oh my gods, I'm sorry, I wasn't really looking where I was going, gosh are you all right?" Hermione stuttered.

“Awh hell I'm fine really ma'm, it's okay, I wasn't loo- dammit " the man said, cradling his forehead, and going on to say a few choice swear words that cannot be mentioned.

Hermione grabbed him by the arm and helped him up and said "Why don't I take you to the hospital wing and fix you up?"

" No really it's fine, could you just take me up to my dorm, it's right up ahead, I'll patch myself up then" he replied.

Hermione sighed and nodded in agreement and together they walked arm in arm to his dorm. "Indelible" he said to the painting, it was Sir Cadogan and Hermione was glad he didn't recognize her or he would have kept them outside for God knows how long, he said a few words about bravery and courage and swung the painting open. His room was exquisite, it was done up in silver and green and everything looked lavish, there was a huge bookshelf filled with a vast array of books that Hermione had read, and some that she hadn't.

"By the look of this room, I'd say you were a Slytherin" Hermione said with a chuckle.

He sighed and looked at her with a grin on his face and replied "Yeah Mc Gonagall said I could redecorate it once I settled in, and yes I am a Slytherin, what about you?"

Hermione's heart dropped a little when she heard him, "Hmm I guess we were sworn enemies" she looked up at him and smiled weakly "I'm a Gryffindor".

He looked up at her in surprise and said "Oh." He shook his head and continued in a nonchalant tone "Oh screw it, we're friends now" smiling sweetly.

Hermione sighed in relief, sat on his bed and said “Yeah, anyway, I still haven't got your name" She glanced at his trunk, saw the name written on it and gasped right before he could reply.

"Holy shit! Zabini??! What in Merlins-"she was interrupted by Zabini before she could continue "Granger?? Hermione Granger?!!”

” What the hell are you doing in Hogwarts??!" They shouted in unison. Hermione took a deep breath to calm down and looked at him expectantly

“Oh yeah, um well I'm the new Ancient Runes teacher here" he said.

"Oh wow, I'm working in the hospital wing now "Hermione said.

"Hmm I'm surprised you of all people couldn't find a better job ‘Mione is it okay if I call you that? I mean I know it's probably only your friends who call you that but I'm sorry it sort of slipped out and, gosh I must look like a fool right now huh?" Blaise rambled, looking flustered.

Hermione couldn't help but giggle at his face "Yes it's fine Blaise, we are friends now"

Blaise looked relieved and said "Well I'm hungry, seeing as 'someone' knocked me over on the way to the Great Hall" looking at Hermione pointedly and grinning.

Hermione blushed and said " Oh come on you wanker, let’s get you some breakfast" and dragged him out of the dorm and towards the kitchens. On the way there, they talked about almost everything under the sun and Hermione was enjoying herself tremendously, turns out Blaise Zabini was great company. They reached the entrance to the kitchens, tickled the pear and went inside. Which was just about when Blaise suddenly froze and his face changed from that of a merry one to a hard, cold one. Hermione looked over him and saw Draco Malfoy sitting at the table eating an enormous stack of pancakes drowned in syrup.

He looked up in surprise and his jaw went slack. "Zabini? What are you doing here?" He said.
To which Blaise replied "I might ask you the same question Malfoy."

"I teach here, well I'm going to, I'm the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Now you tell me" Malfoy said.

"I'm the new Ancient Runes professor" Blaise replied, still unfazed by Malfoy's friendly tone. Hermione thought that this wouldn't end well so she crept around quietly and told Winky the house elf to fix something up for Blaise, while she waited she spotted Malfoy's half finished pancake stack, so she dragged the plate across softly and attacked the pancakes as quietly as she could.

Hermione watched silently as Malfoy said “Look, mate, I’m sorry, I realise now that I was a sadistic asshole and I should never have put her before our friendship. No don’t interrupt me, I thought I was in love with her and well she wasn’t, she only ever left you because she knew I was richer and she wanted that and to be honest I’m glad that she left you because you truly loved her and if she was the shallow bitch that she was, well then I’m glad because you deserved better so yeah, I’m sorry it happened to us and hurt our friendship but I’m not sorry either because she would have hurt my best mate.” Malfoy said, in a rush and stared at Blaise, waiting for a reply. Hermione just stared open mouthed at Malfoy. WHEN did Draco Lucius Malfoy become human?
Blaise gave Malfoy the same cold stare and Hermione thought that he was going to rebuff Malfoy but then he suddenly broke into a smile and Hermione saw Malfoy smile in relief and then they did that weird bro hug thing that Harry and Ron do, they attempted to teach it to her but then they realized she was a girl. Men. Blaise and Malfoy seemed to have forgotten that Hermione was in the room and were chatting away, catching up on their lives, Hermione grabbed the paper bag containing Blaise’s breakfast and was going to sit back down when she saw that Blaise was leaving.
“Mione are you coming?” he said while making his way out, completely forgetting the sole purpose of him coming down here, she shook her head and was going to go out when Malfoy, who seemed to have just acknowledged her presence said “ What are you doing here Granger? “

“I came here with Blaise” Hermione said, making sure to control her temper so that she wouldn’t be giving Malfoy the upper hand.

“Why would he even talk to you?” Malfoy said contempt and surprise on his face.

“Maybe it’s because he’s a much better person than you ever will be Malfoy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to leave now because I cannot stand to be in the same room as you any longer.” Hermione said and sauntered out of the room quickly and found Blaise standing in the corridor.

“What did Draco want?” Blaise asked, once she met him.

“Oh, nothing really he ju-“Hermione’s reply was interrupted by a loud and carrying shout from the kitchens. ”GRANGER, WHERE ARE MY BLOODY PANCAKES??!!” Malfoy shouted.

Hermione and Blaise jumped upon hearing this and she grabbed Blaise by the arm and dragged him away as fast as she could.

“What’s he talking about ‘Mione? What pancakes?” Blaise kept asking as she dragged him all the way to the lake. Hermione just shrugged and kept walking, Blaise giving up on it upon reaching the lake.

Once they reached the lake, Hermione conjured up a blanket and some food and sat down, dragging Blaise down with her. She turned upon him, smiled sweetly and said “Well Blaise, tell me about yourself”

Almost an hour later, Hermione knew almost everything about Blaise Zabini. She found out that he had been engaged to Daphne Greengrass two years ago and that it was Malfoy who had come along and broken it up. Daphne had gone along with Malfoy and Blaise had been left to deal with the heartbreak for he truly believed that she had loved him. Afterwards, Blaise broke off all ties with Daphne and Malfoy and went on a tour around the world, where he met Sir Titus Arbuckle who was a renowned Ancient Runes Translator and they immediately struck up a friendship. Blaise found that he quite enjoyed Runes and was determined to delve into it. He read about them and did as much research as he could on them, he even knew what a computer was and could use it expertly because Sir Arbuckle had shown Blaise that it was easier than reading up on books.

“It is only now that I realize why I threw myself into studying Runes. It’s because I wanted to forget Daphne.” He said, shaking his head sadly.

“Do you think Malfoy ever meant what he said?” Hermione asked softly, careful not to piss Blaise off.

Blaise thought for a moment and said “Yeah I think so. Draco’s not the kind of bloke who would say something like that, it’s not who he is.”

Hermione nodded and went back to her thoughts. In her opinion Draco Malfoy WAS that kind of guy but then she thought back to what he said to Blaise and she thought that maybe Blaise was right, maybe Malfoy had changed. But then of course, he had to ruin the whole thing by confronting her. ’No’ Hermione thought, ‘Malfoy hasn’t changed one bit. He’s still the same Death Eater’

The rest of the evening passed away in a lazy haze and soon it was nightfall.”I’d better get you back to your dorm or else Mc Gonagall’ll have my head” Blaise said, getting up and reaching out to give Hermione a hand. Hermione grinned at the visual image of Professor Mc Gonagall running after Blaise brandishing a sword, followed by an army of Hogwarts soldiers.
