My names Ash Hollen and I'm currently starting my fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I being a witch is not the only thing making me different, I’m a very unusual teenager at best. I study restlessly for my good grades and fall apart if they’re not at their highest, I do not have a crush on any of the Marauders (the cutest/most popular guys at school) I actually detest one of them, Finally I'm a metamorphagus level 1, type A. This means unlike most metamorphagus who can change their entire appearance at will I can only change parts. My eye color for example or my complexion are things I can change anytime I want while my short, metallic blue hair stays the same along with my short, skinny frame. I've always stood out ever since my first year at Hogwarts when I was eleven.
I sit in my compartment all alone on the Hogwarts express. I’m already dressed in my robes and a fairly large book is lying open on my lap. I don't look up when the compartment door opens it's not until the person sits across from me that I finally glance up. I stare into the warm face of my future best friend with a lot of interest and can't help but notice how beautiful she is. Her fiery red hair that hangs to her shoulders and pretty pink lips that are turned up in a sweet smile are breathtaking. It's not until I look at her eyes which are almond shaped and a shocking green that I finally smile back.
"I'm Lily." she smiles.
"Ash." I say shyly.
"Well it's nice to meet you beautiful." A silky voice says from the open compartment door.
I look up to find four boys standing there. The one in the middle has messy, jet black hair and circle glasses, his hazel eyes are looking only at Lily. The one on his right looks more awkward and is avoiding our eyes by looking down; his hair is a nice sandy blonde. There was also a short plump boy with very watery eyes and light brown hair. Finally I glance at the one who spoke he's smirking at me and his black shaggy hair is hanging in front of his eyes.
"This is James and Remus." He points to the middle boy, "and Peter.” He adds.
I nod politely.
"And I’m Sirius, Sirius Black."
I sit glaring at the fire in Gryffindor common room waiting for Lily’s return. I was going to give her heck for leaving me alone with Sirius. My day was going fine I was up in the Owlrey with Lily about to write a letter to my mum. I had just started when I heard the laughter from to known boys. I gritted my teeth praying that they wouldn’t come up. I glanced at Lily and sure enough she had the same expression as me. As soon as the four Marauders appear in the door of the Owlery Lily instantly stands and tells me she has to go. I stare mouth opened as my best friend disserts me. James tries to hit on her but she shoots him her most annoyed look and runs off. I hate those bloody Marauders.
“What do you want!” are the first words out of my mouth when Sirius walks up to me. He shrugs and sits beside me in the grass. I glare at him and he smirks back then drapes his long arm around me. I flinch and push him off.
“Don’t touch me.” I growl.
He barks a laugh and strokes my cheek.
“Come on beautiful don’t be like that.”
I smack his hand away, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Enjoying myself, aren’t you?” He asks.
“I was.” I spit and with that I stand up and stalk back to the castle.
I sit with Lily crying on my shoulder. She’s been crying for an hour about some stupid boy called Snape. I’ve never trusted him personally but apparently he and Lily were good friends.
“Come on Lils. He’s not worth it. His friends are so creepy and you know he’s going to be like them.”
“Severus is different.” She hiccups into my shoulder but I can tell she doesn’t believe it.
“But he’s always hurting you.”
“I’ll give him one more chance.” She says wiping her eyes.
“Lils…” I start to say biting my lip.
“Thanks Ash I know you worry because you care and that’s why you’re my best friend but so is he I need to give him one last chance.” She says it like she’s trying to reassure herself then she hugs me and walks off to bed her cheeks still blotchy.
I sat quietly in the car as we drove to Kings cross station. I would never admit to mum but I was always happy when summer was over. My mom’s a witch like me and my dad well he’s not a muggle but he’s not my dad anymore either. Ever since he ran out on us when I was six I’ve hated him. My mom’s never been the same I love her and all but she gets a little carried away when she drinks which is a lot. I touch the bruises on my arm and feel the tear trickle down my cheek.
“Now hon, I’ll see you at Christmas so don’t miss me too much.” She says stroking my cheek.
I nod she never remembers hurting me which is why I can’t ever hate her. She takes my hand when reach the station and I tuck my wand in the front of my skinny jeans. I grab my rucksack and place it on a trolley. I kiss her on the cheek and while she’s waving me on I run through the barrier of platform 9¾.
As soon as I’m through I feel the relief of being free and I begin to smile. I tie a small ponytail at the back of my hair and let the bangs hang around my face. I turn and try to weave through the hundreds of bodies. As soon as I’m on the train I begin to look for and empty compartment. It takes about 20 minutes but I finally find one. As soon as I sit the train whistle goes off and the train begins to move.
“Ash!” a loud squeal erupts from the doorway.
“Lils!” I jump up and give her a big hug.
“I haven’t seen you since you came and stayed in July.” She says sitting across from me.
“Not much mum got drunk a few times again but nothing serious I hide in my room mostly.” I shrug and her eyes fill with tears this happens always when we bring up mum.
“I’m sorry Ash.” She whispers and wipes her eyes.
“It’s okay Lil how about you petunia still being horrid?” I said my eyes narrowing at the end.
She hisses and flops back against the seat her eyes rolling.
“It’s horrible Blue like honestly every time I come home for the holidays she’s their calling me a freak and being just horrible.” She says annoyed.
“Red she’s just jealous.” I say but can’t help but clench my fist at the thought of her sister.
She nods, “I guess another Christmas at Hogwarts then?”
“Seems like it, love.” I say with a sigh.
We spent the most of the ride talking about her sister and my mother, all about our summers and finally what we expected this year to be like. After the candy trolley came by and we were stuffed full of chocolate frogs, Bertie bots, and fizzing wizzbees we went to change into are robes. When we came back I groaned as I looked into are compartment which was now occupied with four fifteen year old boys.
“Hey beautiful.” Sirius calls to me as we entered the compartment.
I glare at him which makes him laugh.
“Evans.” James said smiling at her a very cocky smile.
Lily and I both roll are eyes and sit away from them continuing are conversation.
“I hope it’s a good year.” Lily says biting her lip.
“It can be Evan’s all you have to do go out with me.” James interjects sitting beside her.
“Is that so James?” Lily says sweetly leaning towards him.
James freezes while staring at her, smiling like an idiot.
“James?” Lily whispers her lips at his ear.
“Yes, Love?” James asks bemused.
“I will never go out with you, you ignorant TOERAG!”
Sirius burst out in laughter as James mouth fly’s open, and I can’t help but giggle to.
“Ah, Prongs I have a feeling she doesn’t want to date you, sorry mate.” Sirius says still laughing.
“Oh and Ash is so into you right Padfoot?” James snaps glaring at his best friend.
Everything goes quiet and I see Sirius flush.
“I would never date her, in her dreams maybe” Sirius says his face red.
I don’t know why, honestly I don’t. I mean its Sirius, Sirius Black the boy I’ve hated since first year it’s just I’ve never been a guy magnet people think I’m weird with my blue hair but at that moment my eyes fill with tears. His words feel like a whip across the chest and I stand up harshly. I feel the tear trickle down my cheek but I’m too angry to wipe it away.
“Ash?” Sirius says confusion on his face.
“Shut up. You think I’d ever want to date you?” I demand another tear falling down my cheek.
“I was just…”
I laugh harshly, “I’m so glad I don’t appeal to you, I’m glad I’m not worthy of being precious Sirius’s girlfriend.” I yell.
“I didn’t mean it like that Ash.” He says.
“Just stay away from me this year or I swear Black I’ll jinx you.” I say my cheeks wet.
“Just stop and leave me alone.” I say.
With all of them looking at me I turn on my heel and stalk out of the compartment whipping my eyes. Lily followed me and hugged me close as I cried on her shoulder and she didn’t even ask why. This is why I love my best friend. When the bus comes to a stop I’ve finished crying and I look normal again. We take the carriages up to the castle and I’m relieved to see none of the Marauders are on ours. When we arrive at the castle we all fill into the great hall for the opening feast. The great hall is the same and it’s just as I remembered. There are the four long house tables and the staff table, four large hour glasses with Red, Green, Blue, and yellow stones to mark the house points, and the ceiling is bewitched to look like the night sky (cloudless, star full night) and a hundred or so candles floating in mid air above my head. I sit beside Lily at the far end of Gryffindor table and wait for the sorting. After all the first years are placed into their houses and we’ve settles down professor Dumbledore stands to make his signature speech.
“Welcome to your first year at Hogwarts and to those coming back Welcome back. I’d like to start of the year on a positive it’s time to fill your heads back up with knowledge you forgot over summer. But mostly I’d like to give a warning. Dark times are heading are way we can all feel it and see it, A dark wizard by the name Lord Voldemort is rising and we need stand together in friendship and love.”
I see Sirius’s eyes turn to mine down the table but I don’t look back.
“On a lighter note I’d like to remind you that the dark forest is forbidden to all students…”
His eyes glance at the Marauders.
“And that all Zonko’s joke supplies are off limits.”
Again his eyes are at the Marauders.
“Further more I’d like to clasp my hands to together and say may the feast begin.”
After his words the tables began to pile up on so many different kinds of food. I laughed and started digging in too much aware that Sirius’s eyes were still on my face.
