To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depended upon it and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go. But Draco couldn't let her go without one final fight.

Four years. Four long years since she had last seen him.

“Hello mudblood.” Draco said, his eyes staring straight at Hermione,

“Been awhile.” Hermione nodded, her fingers traced around her leg in a circular motion.

“It has,” she replied in the same fashion as Draco. An awkward silence filled the air and Hermione took the time to study her past-lover. His hair had thinned significantly although his cold eyes still showed no emotion. He hadn’t grown since they last met and he still wore his family ring on his right index finger.

“What are you doing here, Draco?” she asked, finally finding her bearings. Draco smiled slowly and shifted his weight from his right leg to his left.

“I came to rescue you.” He stated. He reached for Hermione’s arm but she jerked it away. Draco took a step back and looked hurt, “What? Don’t you want to run away with me anymore?” Hermione shook her head in disbelief.

“Draco, that was four years ago.” She protested.

“So?” He smiled and took a step forward her.

“So!” Hermione’s voice raised an octave, “Draco you lost your chance when you slept with another woman while you were engaged with me!” Draco just stood there while Hermione had her rant.

“Hermione, I’m sorry.” He said suddenly, “I was drunk and I didn’t know what I was doing.”

“So does that mean you get off the hook?” She screamed. Today was her perfect day and she wasn’t going to let anyone ruin it.

“Run away with me. We could be together, forever. Your child is mine and he knows it,” Hermione flinched violently and her eyes blazed with anger.

“Draco, you left me with no money, no house, no nothing! He was there for me! Cadence has had to grow up without her father! I’m not just going to run away with you!” Hermione screamed back, stamping her foot on the ground.

“Cadence? You named our daughter Cadence?” He said in disbelief, “Cadence Potter are you kidding me?” Hermione just shrugged her shoulders, staring at Draco through her pointed eyes.
“Draco, leave, just leave!” Hermione pleaded. Draco, however, ignored her as he took a step forward, reaching for Hermione.

“Mudblood, I love you.” Draco said suddenly, grabbing Hermione’s neck and pulling her in for a kiss. Hermione pushed against Draco’s chest and shoved him away. Draco leaned into kiss Hermione again, but she wouldn’t let him.

“No Draco,” Hermione said in desperation, “I love Harry. It will always be Harry.”

{five years earlier}

The snow began to fall around the two lovers. Their hands were entwined as they walked down the moonlit lane. They never said a word to one another -- they didn’t need to. To them, silence was bliss. With silence, came solitude and thoughts. Wonderful thoughts.

“Brrr, it’s getting cold.” Hermione said, running her hands up and down her arms, hoping, that if she caught enough friction, it would subside for warmth, but it was no avail. Draco smiled at Hermione and put his around her shoulder, using his body warmth to warm her up. Hermione smiled graciously at Draco and snuggled up to his chest. He was warm.

They turned the corner that led them onto the main streets of London, but barely anyone was awake at this time of the night. They were all asleep, tucked up snug in their beds waiting for Father Christmas to come and put presents under their Christmas trees. Hermione and Draco walked past an ice-skating rink that had ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ playing softly. Suddenly, Draco spun Hermione around and kissed her.

“I fancy you.” He said. Hermione was shocked, that was the first time she had heard Draco say that. She always thought he would be too proud to tell her. A rush of happiness raced through Hermione, from the top of her head to the tip of her toes.

“I love you too, Draco.” Hermione replied, kissing him again, “It will always be you.” When they broke apart, Draco fumbled for something in his pocket and pulled out a silver lined box. Hermione gasped and raised her hand to her mouth, “Draco.” She whispered, but he held up a finger to silence her. Draco kneeled down on one knee and cleared his throat.

“Granger, I should have you asked you this sooner, but, truth was, well, I was scared,” Draco took a deep breath before continuing. Small snowflakes were beginning to float onto the box and on Hermione, “So, Granger, will you will you, marry me?” He opened the box and inside the little box laid the greatest treasure of all: the Malfoy ring. Tears began to well up in Hermione’s eyes as she laid her eyes upon it. The last time she had seen this ring was two years ago, when Narcissa Malfoy wore it.

“What about your parents?” Hermione asked, unable to take her eyes off the ring. She wanted nothing more in the world to say yes. To become Mrs. Draco Malfoy. But she wouldn’t make Draco turn against her whole family just for her.

“What about them?” Draco asked, his fingers shaking slightly. Several passing muggles had stopped and watched them.

“Well, they hate me Draco. I can’t make you turn your back on everything you are. On your Malfoy name, just for me.” Hermione protested. Draco stood to his feet slowly and walked up to Hermione, the ring balancing precariously in the silver box.

“Granger, I don’t give a damn about what my parents say about you. I lo—like you and if they can’t accept that, well, then screw them.” Hermione giggled when she heard Draco pay his own family out. He pulled Hermione in for a passionate kiss and when they broke apart, both of them were slightly breathless, “Well, this isn’t how I imagined this proposal to go.” Draco laughed, looking down at the ring, “Dammit. Anyway, Granger, will you please marry me? Please say yes?” He added humorously, wincing slightly. Hermione laughed and kissed Draco’s cold hands.

“Yes, Draco. I would love to marry you. Like I said. I love you, it will always be you.”

“Hermione?” Both Hermione and Draco spun around to see Harry standing at the door wearing a black tuxedo with Cadence holding his hand, “What the hell are you doing here, Malfoy?” A sense of relief washed over Hermione when she saw Harry and Cadence.

“We were just talking.” Draco grumbled, not taking his eyes off Cadence. She had his eyes and his blonde hair. Harry noticed what Draco was doing and put his hand in front of Cadence as if he was protecting her.

“Far out Potter, I’m not going to hurt her. She’s my daughter for crying out loud!” Draco yelled, kneeling down and staring at Cadence straight in the eyes, “Hello sweetheart.” Cadence clung onto Harry, her grey eyes showing little fear.

“Who are you?” she asked, still clinging to Harry. Hermione and Harry looked at each other in fear. Hermione still hadn’t told Cadence who her father was.

“You haven’t told her.” Draco said quietly turning around and facing Hermione, “My own daughter—”

“She is not your daughter Malfoy!” Hermione said, “You don’t deserve to have her as your daughter.” Draco stood to his feet and walked slowly towards Hermione.

“She is my daughter Mudblood, no matter what you do she will figure it out.” Draco suddenly went cold, his eyes showing no more emotion, “Run away with me. I could support you. You, me and Cadence.” Draco said, his face inches away from Hermione’s. A silence filled the room as Hermione and Draco stared at each other. Harry stood at the doorframe, holding Cadence.

“Goodbye Draco.” She finally said, pushing him away and walking over to Cadence and Harry. She kissed Harry firmly on the cheek and hugged Cadence.

“Really is that it? After all we’ve been through together? It’s just goodbye.” Draco said. Hermione stood up and faced Draco.

“Yes, that is it.” Hermione stated bluntly.

“Fine.” Draco spat, pushing roughly past Hermione and Harry.

{four years ago}

Hermione waddled into their London apartment. She got a glance at herself in the mirror and saw that her belly was getting even rounder.

‘Not long now.’ She thought, smiling as she imagined the day when she’d able to hold her baby for the first time. Feeling hungry, Hermione walked into the kitchen and grabbed herself a plate of cheese and a glass of milk before settling down at the Kitchen table.

“Shh, she’ll hear us.” Draco whispered. Hermione’s ears pricked up as she heard her fiance’s voice. He defiantly wasn’t talking to her. Then her ears caught another noise; girl’s laughter.

‘No, he wouldn’t cheat on me,’ Hermione told herself, but curiosity killed the cat. She walked out of the kitchen and stood by the bedroom door; which was suspiciously closed. Pressing her ears against the door she heard two distinct voices. Draco’s and another woman’s? No, it couldn’t be. It was only three weeks until their baby was due and two weeks until their wedding. He wouldn’t do this!
Hermione walked over to a small crack in the door a peeked in. Sure enough, there was Draco Malfoy—her fiance—was in their bed kissing someone else that wasn’t her.

“Sarah, shh, seriously, my housemate will be home soon. I don’t want her to find out about us. I mean, we’ve gotten this far.” Hermione jerked her head up, tears threatening to break loose. She grabbed her things and ran to the front door, slamming it behind her.

“GRANGER!” She heard Draco yell, but she ignored him. She didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. He was a cheating bastard. Walking out into the streets of London, Hermione threw everything in her car and drove away. She drove all through the night until she finally reached Godric’s Hollow.

“Hermione, what are you doing here? What happened?” Harry asked when she got out of the car. Her make-up all distorted over her face. She ran as fast as she could into Harry’s arms.

“He cheated on me Harry.”

“Hermione? Are you okay?” Hermione spun out of her trance and saw Harry’s concerned face looking over her. Smiling graciously, Hermione pecked Harry on the cheek.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Now get out! It’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.” Hermione said, pushing her fiance out the door.

*

“You may now kiss the bride.” The pastor’s voice echoed throughout the congregation. Harry smiled and lifted Hermione’s veil off her face. Her long bushy hair was smoothed down for her special occasion and fell down in neat curls behind her back. Harry leaned in to kiss Hermione and she responded automatically by kissing him back.

“I love you.” Harry said, staring into Hermione’s eyes. Out of the corner of her eye Hermione spotted Draco leaving. She wasn’t sure how he got in and frankly, she didn’t care. He had hurt her, Harry hadn’t. Cadence now had a father.

“I love you too.” Hermione said back, kissing him again. Harry
entwined Hermione’s hand with his and together, they walked down the aisle.

“He’s gone Hermione. He can’t hurt you, or Cadence anymore. I promise.” Harry said, kissing Hermione’s forehead. Cadence waddled up to Harry and Hermione. Harry knelt down to Cadence’s height and picked her up, “Well, aren’t you looking beautiful today Cadence.” Harry said dotingly, running his finger along the bridge of Cadence’s nose. Cadence giggled and pulled at Harry’s glasses.

“Was that bad man gone, daddy?” Cadence asked, referring to Draco.

“Yes, yes Cadence, he’s gone.” Harry said. He glanced at Hermione
and kissed her once more.

“Hermione I love you.” Harry said seriously, “And I will protect you until the day I die.”

“I love you too.” Hermione replied, “And you, Cadence and I are going to have a wonderful life together.”
