Chapter 24

“I’m going with you,” said James in a tone that left little room for question as he handed the map to Lily.

Lily looked at him nervously, before saying, “Fine, come if you must. Lets go. We don’t have time to argue about this.”

“We’re not arguing. Whose arguing?” asked James.

“Well we might if I were to question why you wanted to come all of the sudden,” snapped Lily.

“I’m trying to be helpful. But if you don’t want my help I can take the map and the cloak back upstairs,” snarled James, stepping closer.

“I… what? ….no….it was just weird for a second that’s all.”

“What’s weird?” asked James suddenly confused, he obviously had forgotten about their…..um…. earlier quarrel.

“You…..Never mind. We – Do – Not – Have – The – Time!” gasped Lily suddenly, sprinting from the common room with a rather confused James in tow. He threw the cloak over both of them, when he came back to reality, as they ran down the hall. They both breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Dumbledore step up to the statue by his door that opened to the passage to his ancient office.

“PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE!” they yelled as one. Dumbledore turned around calmly and cheerfully like he somehow knew they were there, and looked at the couple like he could see the two even under the cloak.

Wow. He knows it all.

He said the password and stepped aside waiting to feel the breeze from the kids sprinting past him into the staircase leading to the office. Once they had all entered the office, Dumbledore gently closed the door and stepped behind his desk, as James yanked the cloak off Lily and himself.

“Now, Mr. Potter and Miss. Evans can you explain to me why the two of you were pounding down the hall and bellowing my name in the middle of a corridor at this late hour,” replied Dumbledore smiling slightly, his eyes twinkling.

“Head Master! In Hogsmeade there’s….er….Voldemort is going to, well actually I s’pose his people are going to, Voldemort doesn’t really do the dirty work does he? But anyway he’s…er…well, I don’t actually know what’s going on. Um….Lily, care to share with the Head Master what exactly you were so worked up about?” said James suddenly realizing he didn’t even know or at least understand why they were there.

“Yeah, that would help,” replied Lily tearing her gaze away from James, she hadn’t really been able to be around him for quite a while since their fight, but he was acting like nothing had ever happened and they were back to being friends/lovers. He was treating her like a close friend again, acting like he cared for her, and generally being decent again, like old times. Lily wanted to cry. Thinking about how it used to be in old days before everything went haywire. But she didn’t have time to deal with overwhelming emotions right now, she had to help Dumbledore, help Hogsmeade, so she proceeded to tell the head master everything that was explained to her by Malfoy. “So, what are we going to do?” asked Lily anxiously wringing her hands, staring at Dumbledore as he sat behind his desk resting his chin on his fingers.

He was staring at his desk deep in thought, trying to take in everything Lily was telling him. His electric blue eyes darkened with concern as she poured out the information like she was spilling the news all over the desk in no real order, for him to organize, examine and then clean up. Slowly, Dumbledore began the process of sorting through the information, and figure out exactly what was going on here. “Miss. Evans, what night is this supposed to occur?”

“February 25 at nine o’clock.”

“Ok, and where in Hogsmeade?”

“I don’t know for sure. Probably, most of the town.”

“Why Hogsmeade? I have a good idea, but did Mr. Malfoy share any thoughts with you, Miss. Evans?”

“Voldemort wants to prove his power over you and draw real attention to himself. Just since I’ve been involved, the Death Eaters have grow by thirty or forty people, granted some of them are under the Imperius Curse, but anyway he thinks he has enough to be getting along with. He also has the giants on his side, but you know that, and he’s working on some other creatures. Anyway, he has enough backing that he thinks he’s strong enough to show his power over the community. And he figures if he comes out and shows how strong he is he’ll be able to recruit more people just waiting for someone strong and powerful to emerge. Then he can slowly, well he wants - expects - it to be swift, but whatever, anyway then he can start to take over the wizarding world as we know it. But I believe he fears you greatly and feels if he can show some form of power over you then more people will be willing to follow him. Professor, I’m afraid this is just the beginning,” finished Lily very quickly. Dumbledore didn’t say anything for a while, he just continued to stare at his desk, lost in thought.

James, who was standing next to Lily, gaped at her. How could he have been so oblivious to what was going on around him? Yeah, he was helping Dumbledore with the order and everything, but he had no idea about all of the recruitments, the giants, for Merlin’s sake the Imperius curse? What are these people – mad?

Eventually, Lily felt his eyes on her and she looked at him questioningly. When he continued to stare in shock, she mouthed almost worriedly, “What’s wrong with you? Are you ok?” She seemed to pull him out of his stupor, because he stepped closer to her and grabbed her hand, turning to Dumbledore, and enjoying the complete shock that crossed her face out of his peripheral vision.

“So Professor what are we going to do?” demanded James firmly, “Well?!”

Dumbledore slowly, sadly, determinedly, looked up at James before he said……………

Dun Dun Dun [as dramatic and climactic music plays]. Well, kiddies that was just a taster. I didn’t have a lot of time over break to really sit down and write, I know, a break, I should have had all the time in the world but I worked the whole time….sorry. Anyway, I wrote this much and I thought it should tide you guys over till at least next week where there will be the rest of this chapter. So leave a review as to how you think the chapter is going. I’ll leave the line in so next week you’ll know just where it left off. K? Sweet.
