At first I thought it was just a phase, and Sirius would give up on the idea when he couldn't come up with a plan. But no. He sat on his bed night and day like he was meditating. I had to remind him to eat and to sleep. Finally, I was asleep when I felt my bed shift. Sirius had climbed up onto the bed next to me and whispered my name. I swatted at him and turned away from him. "Nathascha!" He whispered louder. "I have a plan." I rolled over, looking at him through my messy hair. "Do you?" I was interested. "Yes! I'm going to transform into a dog, run down the corridor, then I'm going turn back into a human so that the dementors will swarm me, then I'll turn back into a dog... And I'll just repeat that cycle while you jump out that window up there and swim to the mainland. I'll meet you there." He looked so excited. I laughed. "Transform into a dog? With what wand?!" Sirius scowled at me. "I'm an unregistered animagus. I can turn into a dog at will. Seriously, you didn't know that?" "No!" I gasped. So he finally came up with a plan... A really stupid, dangerous, stupid plan. "Are you sure this is going to work?" "No. But isn't it worth it?" I bit my lip. It wasn't worth it to me. I had 38 years left on my sentence. A lot, yes. But I would be getting out sooner or later... Sirius was in until he died. It didn't matter if he tried to escape for not. The most they could do is sentence him to death, and that really only shorten his sentence if you thought about it... If I tried and got sentenced to death, I had nothing else to look forward to. No chance to live out my older years as a normal person. Nothing. "Sirius..." His face fell. "You're backing out?" He looked up at me, his grey eyes sad. "I just... I don't see a reason for me to... I mean, I get out-" "In 40 years! You're life will be almost over! You won't be able to get a job, you won't be able to get married or have kids! Don't you want a chance to live life?!" He was waving his arms around, getting agitated. A prisoner from somewhere screamed for him to shut up. "I don't want to die! I don't want us to fail and die. I don't want to get caught. Even if we do get out of here, we'll probably drown out there! Do you know how far it is to land?" My eyes teared up a little. Sirius looked at me, emotionless. "I guess I'll just leave without you, then. I'll leave tomorrow, that way we'll have some time to spend together. I guess we won't be seeing each other for another 40 years after that." I felt so ashamed. I wanted so badly to go with him, but I was scared. I nodded, and he patted my shoulder, the equivalent of a huge hug for us. "Thanks." He patted my head and moved back to his bed. "G'night, Nathascha." "Good night, Sirius." ********************************************************************************** I didn't sleep the rest of that night, at all. I really don't think SIrius did either, because he normally snores something terrible and mumbles when he isn't snoring. The second the sunlight started shining throught the tiny window at the top of our cell, I sat up and looked at it. It was pretty high up, but if I climped on top of the toilet, I could jump and hoist myself up... If I even had the strength. I shook the thought from my head. I wasn't going to do that. Sirius rolled over and stared at me. "Good morning, friend." His voice sounded sad. I mumbled a greeting back. He patted the bed, and I moved over to sit down by him. "I'm not mad, you know. Just.." "Hurt," I finished for him, staring ahead. "We shouldn't be like this, on our last day together for a long time. We should have fun." "Damn, should've tried to make some wine in the toilet. Wish I'd had known sooner." I forced a smile. "You're crazy, Nathascha." He laughed and gently pushed me. I pulled him into a hug. "I'll... I'll miss you so much. What will I do without you?" He hugged back. "I'll miss you too..." "I'll come with you, then!" I said it without thinking. I jerked away from him and looked down. "Really?!" He sounded so excited. I couldn't say no again... and really, how could I survive without him in this place? The dementors, the cold weather, the freaky guy in the cell across from us who liked talking about eating us. I wouldn't be able to do it. I'd probably waste away and die in this place. "Yea..!" I tried sounding confident, but it wouldn't work. He hugged me and kissed me forehead. I looked at him weird. "What was that?" He'd never kissed any part of me before, ever. "Heat of the moment. I got excited." He blushed a little. "Oh." I said to myself. ********************************************************************************* "Ready?" Sirius asked once me night had fallen. "Yea, I think so." My heart was beating so hard he could probably hear it. "Okay. I'll see you on the mainland. Good luck." Sirius transformed into a dog and squeezed through the cell bars. "Okay, okay..." I whispered to myself. Sirius and I had managed to break one of the window bars earlier that day. The sea air had corroded them enought that it wasn't hard, and so now there was enough room for me to climb out. After that, I would have to jump from the little window into the sea, which was about a two story drop. I prayed to whatever god existed that the water was deep enough. I climbed up on the toilet tank and waited. Moments later, I could feel the dementors leave. The room warmed up a little bit and my head felt clearer. Their awful rattling noises got quieter as they flew down the corridor away from me. I took a deep breath and jumped. I got a good hold on the window sill, and managed to pull myself up. It was just tall enough for me to crouch and prepare to launch from the window. I took a deep breath of fresh sea air and admired the view. Way far in front of me was the lights of a small town, the place Sirius and I would be meeting. "Here goes nothing," I whispered to myself, and I jumped. "I'm scared." I was 7, and my dad was trying to get me to jump off of the high diving board into our pool. "What if I go to deep and can't come up and drown?" "If you run in the air, and when you hit the water, you won' t go as far down." He said softly. "You can do it." The memory came to me in a flash, and I did what my dad had told me to do as I hit the freezing water. My insides screamed for air as I tried swimming up. I'd gone deeper than I thought I would. It was cold, and my clothes were weighing me down. Finally, a wave pulled me up into the glorious surface. I gasped, and managed to lose my prisoner's uniform so that I was in nothing but my underwear. I floated there for a few moments, gathering my bearings. I wasn't far from Azkaban, and I had a really long way to go before I could reach land... I doggy-paddled softly, trying not to wear my self out. Occasionally a wave would push me farther towards the town, and other times one would pull me back towards Azkaban. About three-quarters of the way there, I was too tired to move. I floated in the water for a long time, just letting it take me wherever it wanted to go, and luckily it seemed to have the same destination as me. A huge wave dragged me underwater. I started panicking, trying to swim up, but the water kept dragging me farther down. I crashed into something hard and the water trickled off of me. I'd landed on the beach. I was only 50 feet or so from the dock that Sirius and I were to meet under. I struggled to stand up, swaying from fatigue. I wobbled my way to the dock, cut up from the rusty window bars and being thrown into the sand. I was tired and sore and wet, but the thought of being free with Sirius kept me going. I collapsed under the dock, and I heard sand shift somewhere behind me. I felt someone dragging me across the sand, and it hurt like hell, but I was too tired to care. I opened my eyes. I was in some sort of small sand cave, and a single candle lit the room. Sirius sat across from the candle. "Took you long enough to get here," he sounded just as tired as I was. "I didn't have four legs to swim with." I tried to smile. He passed me a bottle of water. "Where did you get this?" "There was a couple of people on the beach a where I landed. They were having too much fun to notice the dog dragging their cooler and towels away..." Sirius tossed a towel over me, looking uncomfortable. "Thanks. Where are we?" Sirius rolled his eyes and covered himself up with a towel as well. "I dug a little cave so people wouldn't find us... I used some driftwood as a door, to keep us hidden. Anymore questions?" "Maybe tomorrow..." I muttered as I rolled over. I was too tired to think about anything other than sleep. A/N: So the whole jumping into deep water and running in the air is legit. My dad does it when he jumps off of bridges. No lie. A/N2: Questions, comments, insults? Leave me a review! http://www.harrypotterfanfiction.com |
