She lifts her head and glares at me, “You’d only tease me.”

“And what’s so wrong with teasing?”

“It hurts people.”

I shrug my shoulders, “Then choose not to be hurt.”

Chapter 1: A Silly Book-Lover
[View Online]

Awesome chapter image by inspector.@TDA

Another Valentine’s season story, this one is my favorite so far. Enjoy. soapman333

Is it creepy to watch a pretty girl from a distance?

Yeah, I know it is, but Sarah Modley is literally the prettiest girl that I have ever seen.

“Albus, will you stop staring at her and help me with this essay? Professor Longbottom will freak if I turn another one in late.” My best friend, Katherine Porters is sitting next to me.

I watch Sarah leave the library and turn to Katie, “Sure, could you get me,” I grab a scrap of parchment and scribble on it, “this textbook from the herbology section?”

Katie looks at me gratefully, “Thanks, Al. You’re the best," she sighs and leaves to get the book.

Katherine and I are two very strange friends, although, I’m sure everyone says that about their own best friendship.

She slapped me within the first five minutes of meeting me in our first year.

***

My dad and my mum are hugging me, one last time before I aboard the train.

“Be sure to write, young man, we will miss you so very much.” My mother strokes my head.

They let go and I wave at them before searching for an empty compartment, or some relatives or something.

I stumble across a dark haired girl in an empty compartment. She’s scribbling notes inside a textbook. Something clicks inside of me and I storm into her compartment.

“What are you doing?” I cry, snatching the book away from her.

She rolls her eyes at me, “You’re one of those people.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask her, looking at the scribbles she so profanely put in her book.

“You would take a bullet for any book, any day,” she explains, getting up and snatching her book back before I could probably decipher her hand writing.

“So what? Books are a million times wiser than any man.”

“Books aren’t people.”

The train staggers forward and I’m thrown into a seat.

“Who said you could sit here, book lover?” she hisses.

“I fell, clearly.”

“Get out before I stab this book with my quill.”

I roll my eyes, “That book’s already ruined.”

She frowns, “You didn’t even read what I wrote, it might be good.”

I get up, “Look, I seriously doubt that anything you put in that book is better than what it already contains.”

She screeches and stands up, glaring into my face. She’s fairly short for her age.

“No reply?” I ask her, “Figures.” I turn to leave, but she pulls me back and slaps me, hard, across my face.

***

We were both sorted into Gryffindor and forced to sit by each other in classes because of our similar last names, our disdain towards each other at that time was known by our fellow classmates as “The Porters-Potter War”.

Our constant bickering drove the professors insane and we were re-seated, but that didn’t keep us from throwing parchments, quills, ink bottles, and books, well, Katie threw the books, at each other.

***
“Stop your yellin’!” Longbottom shouts at us.

Katie and I glare at each other from across the potted plant in the middle of the table.

Longbottom sighs, “Look, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to give you both detention for this interruption.”

My mouth falls open, professors try to keep from giving first years detention and so, consequently, this is the first time a professor has given us one for disrupting class.

“Meet, here, at the Greenhouse at six tonight,” he tells us and turns back to the rest of the class to continue his lecture.

We arrived, shivering under our cloaks, to the Greenhouse and waited for our professor.

“I can’t believe you got me in trouble," I grumble at the ground.

“Excuse me? You’re the one that threw dirt at my face. Stupid book lover.”

“Only because you kept glaring at me with your crazy eyes.”

Longbottom arrives, stopping our bickering with his presence. He watches us warily as we scrub the glass panels of his classroom.

“I do not have crazy eyes,” she hisses at me when he opens up a textbook to prepare for tomorrow’s lecture.

“Uh, yeah you do. They’re huge and doe-like.”

“So?” she prodes.

“So they’re creepy.”

“You said that they were crazy.”

‘Well, they’re crazy and creepy.”

Longbottom looks up from his work, “You two, stop bickering. Why is it you can’t get along? You’re both excellent students.”

We looked at each other, unsure why exactly we hate each other.

“Because she writes in her textbooks,” I say, wincing slightly at how stupid that sounded.

“Potter, what’s wrong with that?” Longbottom asks, getting up from his desk and walking over to us.

“It’s vandalism over someone else’s hard work.”

“Vandalism? What do you write in your textbooks, Katie?” he turns and asks the girl next to me.

She blushes, and mumbles something.

“Sorry?” both the professor and I ask her.

“POETRY! OKAY?” she yells at us and storms out of the classroom.

***

Katie returns, textbook in hand and smiling like an idiot.

“Guess what?” she asks me, sitting down.

I open up the book and begin searching for Devil’s Snare, “What?”

“Do you know Daniel Thomas?”

I nod my head, flipping through pages.

“He just asked me out to Hogsmeade this weekend!”

“Really?” I say without enthusiasm, I find the right page and begin taking notes.

“Don’t act so surprised, I’m fairly attractive,” she teases me.

“What?” I ask, looking up, bumping my ink bottle all over the essay I started.

I curse under my breath and attempt to clean it up with my wand.

Katie looks on the scene in amusement, “I said that I’m fairly attractive.”

I wave off her statement and continue writing on my newly cleaned parchment.

“You don’t think so?” she asks.

I look up into her bright, blue eyes, “You’re like a sister to me. No, I don’t find you to be attractive.”

She ponders this before smiling mischievously, “What about that time you kissed me?”

“That, was an accident.”

***

It’s our fifth year and we’re stuck in the broom cupboard, hiding from my exe, Susie Brown.

“I swear that if we get out of this alive, I will buy you as much chocolate as your heart desires,” I tell Katie, we’re literally pressed up against each other. Broom cupboards are tiny rooms for two fifteen year olds.

Katie smiles at me, “Eh, don't worry about it. I'm just surprised you haven't dragged me in here sooner
.”

I stare at her in shock
“I'm not going to snog you,” I hiss at her, mortified.

“Hm, yes, but you want to.”

I shake my head, but the movement causes us to bump into to each other,
“I am so sorry,” I whisper to her.

“I wish I could see your face, I bet its redder than Rose’s when she’s talking to Scorpius.”

I shush her and concentrate, not on her body leaning against mine, but the fact that we’re in here for a reason,
“I think she’s left this corridor,” I say after another five minutes.

We both reach to open the door at the same time, causing us to tumble out of the cupboard and me to fall on top of her, limbs tangled. As we struggle to get out of the embrace, our lips end up grazing each other. We both jumped in surprise, allowing us to properly untangle ourselves from each other.

***

Katie raises her eyebrow at me, “That ‘accident’ was my first kiss, don’t mock it.”

“Too late,” I grumble, finishing the essay and handing it to her to copy.

She takes the parchment and looks at me curiously, “So there was never a time that you thought I was attractive?”

I think about it, “Well, remember Christmas Ball, last year?”

“Oh course I do, It took me forever to get my makeup just perfect.”

***

I’m pacing in the common room, waiting for my date, Alisha Yang, to come down from her dormitory.

I hear footsteps, so I look and see a very beautiful Alisha gliding down the stairs in a peach dress.

“Albus, you have to see Katie! She looks phenomenal,” she gushes when she reaches me.

How on earth can someone look more beautiful than my date? I wonder in my head.

That’s when Katie glided down.

She’s wearing a royal blue dress, her black hair is pinned up to reveal her strong bone structure and bare collar bone. The dress clings to her figure and I painfully remember how that figure felt, pushed up against me in a broom cupboard, just the year before.

“Wow,” I tell her when she reaches us.

“Do you think that Todd will like it?” she asks me.

I smile at her, “He wouldn’t be straight if he didn’t.”

***

We walk out of the library and start the great trek back to the Gryffindor Tower.

“You’re very attractive too, just so you know,” Katie says to me.

I widen my eyes, “Really?”

“Well, yeah, you’ve got the whole sexy nerdy vibe going for you. It’s appealing.”

I shake my head and laugh, “Nobody goes for the book-lover.”

She laughs at my use of her nickname for me, “It’s true. Oh, remember this past summer you invited me to your house? We went swimming? Oh man, you were smoking.”

***

I threw Lily, screaming and kicking, into the lake.

“Albus! You’re so mean!” she cries, spitting water out of her mouth.

Katie is sunbathing on the shore.
“Oi! Meanie! Get me some lemonade or something, I’m becoming dehydrated,” she calls to me.

Oh no, she did not just command me to do something.

I grin and sneak up behind her.

“What was that? Did you want me to take you to the house so that you could get yourself some lemonade?” I ask her, throwing her over my shoulder and walking towards my house.

Apparently, I’m not as strong as I thought I was. Her kicking and flailing caused us to tumble over, an action that has produced embarrassing results for us, she lands with a
thump! on top of me.

“You don’t struggle when a guys tries to kidnap you,” I chasten her while attempting to get up.

She doesn’t respond with a quirky comeback, but stares openly at my abs.

“Enjoying the view?” I tease her, a little unnerved.

My discomfort soon passes because she gets up and helps me off the ground.
“I’m happy you can’t properly kidnap, I was worried for Sarah Modley,” she finally teases back.

***

“Well it’s settled then,” Katie says.

“What is?”

Katie stops walking, when I realize she isn’t next to me, I look back at her,

“We’re both attractive,” she concludes, dropping down to tie her shoe.

I chuckle, “I just feel bad about all those other students. The poor kids have to live under our shadows, everyday.”

She gets up from the ground, “Exactly.”

We begin walking again in silence.

“Hey Al?” she calls to me.

“Hm?” I respond.

“Did you ever fancy me?”

“Not really. . .” I reply, truthfully.

“Why not?” she asks.

“Katie, we’ve been over this, you’re like a sister to me,” I repeat and look at her.

“Well, I had a crush on you,” she says nonchalantly.

“What!?” I choke out, stopping, once again, in the corridor.

She laughs at my face, “Is that really so surprising?”

“When? For how long?” I gasp out.

“You figure it out,” she shrugs.

***

“Why do you keep staring at Sarah?” Katie asks me. It’s the beginning of this school year and the first years have just been sorted.

“I think she’s the most beautiful girl that I’ve ever seen.” I, truthfully, tell my best friend.

“Now that can’t be true. You know a lot of really beautiful girls. You’re friends with one,” she teases me, frowning slightly.

I wave her off and plunge into my feast.

***

Oh no.

Katie fancies me.

I look at her a feeling of guilt present on my face.

“So are we going to the kitchens or not?” she asks, her voice cracking a little.

I sigh, “Um, yeah. I could use some chocolate.”

We walk in awkward silence to the kitchens. My mind is reeling from my discovery.

“Since after our first detention,” she says to me.

I snap myself out of my thoughts, “What?”

She sighs, “I’ve fancied you ever since you chased after me our first detention.”

***

“POETRY! OKAY?” she yells at us and storms out of the classroom.

I stare after her and frown.

“I think that’s quite enough cleaning for today, you are excused,” Longbottom says, also staring after the girl.

I grab my things and the girl’s things and run out of the building, stopping to figure out which direction she went.

I hear sniffles from behind a tree in the forest and, carefully walk towards it.

Katie is crying and holding onto a necklace around her neck.

“You left your stuff,” I whisper to her.

She doesn’t respond. I shuffle my feet, awkwardly, before sitting down next to her and rubbing her back.

“Could I read some of it?” I ask the girl.

She lifts her head and glares at me, “You’d only tease me.”

“And what’s so wrong with teasing?”

“It hurts people.”

I shrug my shoulders, “Then choose not to be hurt.”

She smiles at me, for the first time, lightening up her big, blue eyes.

“My favorite is on page twelve,” she opens up her bag and pulls out the familiar textbook.

***

We reach the kitchens.

Katie gets her favorite, grilled cheese sandwich. I ask for hot chocolate.

We sit in silence.

I’m the first to break it, “Look, Katie-”

“Don’t,” she cuts me off, “I don’t want to hear an apology.”

“What do you want to hear?” I plead with her.

She smiles a sad smile at me and takes a bite of her sandwich.

***

“Where have you been? I need help with the stupid charm for Charms class,” Katie attacks me once I pass through the portrait hole.

“Guess what?”

She raises her eyebrows, “You’re going to do my homework for me?”

“No, do you know Susie Brown?”

“I know her mom. Lavendar’s friends with my mom.”

“Well, she kind of attacked me in the corridor and we totally snogged in an empty classroom!”

***

I wince at that memory, now knowing that fifteen year old girl had a crush on me.

“What do you think of our prospects of beating Slytherin this year?” Is she really talking about quidditch?

I ignore her question, “What about your boyfriend, Todd?”

She rolls her eyes, “Todd was a decoy, idiot.”

“Wait, what?”

“We were in a fake relationship. I thought you figured that out?”

***

We’re in the three broomsticks on a double date.

“I can’t believe your brother caught that snitch so quickly, blew my mind.” Todd and I are talking about a match earlier this week. Susie is clinging to my arm and Katie is drinking her butterbeer.

“I’m bored. Let’s go Allie-bear.” Susie pulls at my arm.

“Sorry guys,” I tell them, pulling sickles out of my pocket to pay for our drinks.

“Hey, don’t worry about it. Katie and I could use some alone time too,” Todd replies, grabbing Katie’s hand.

I look at the their intertwined hands and shrug before chasing after my girlfriend.

***

We leave the kitchens.

“Hold up. Did you say that broom cupboard thing was your first kiss?”

She sighs, “Now he gets it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?”

“Do I really have to answer that?”

“Godric, Katie,” I pull her into an empty classroom and pace in front of her, choosing my words carefully.

“How was I supposed to miraculously know that you fancy me?”

She doesn’t answer, instead she grabs my arm to stop my pacing.

I stare into her doe eyes.

***

“What the hell, Katie?” I’m pacing in an empty classroom,

“What?” she asks, frowning as she watches me pace.

“Why didn’t you tell me you and Todd broke up?” I ask her.

She waves off my question, “Oh, you’re with Susie, so I didn’t think it mattered.”

‘What? That doesn’t make sense. We’re best friends, you need to tell me these things. Oh Merlin, is that why you’ve been moping around lately?”

“Sure.”

“Allie-bear!” Susie calls into the classroom.

“Oh Godric, come on,” I pull Katie with me racing down the corridor and throwing us both into a cramped broom cupboard.

“What the hell?” Katie asks as she is slammed against my body.

“I broke up with Susie a few minutes ago, she’s delusional,” I explain.

Katie seems to perk up.

“I swear that if we get out of this alive, I will buy you as much chocolate as your heart desires.”

***

“Look, Albus, I’m tired,” Katie starts to turn for the door, but I stop her.

I need to be able to look into her blastedly beautiful eyes.

“Stop it! You don’t fancy me, I get it. Go run off with Sarah and just leave me alone,” she pushes my arm off of hers and runs out of the classroom.

Sarah? Oh right, Sarah Modley. I’m in love with Sarah Modley.

I think about her and how she flirts with me during potions, kissing my cheek and touching my arm.

She’s not that pretty.

***

Katie and I are laying underneath a large tree just outside of the castle. She’s writing in her textbook and I’m thinking about Sarah.

“Hey Katie?” I ask her.

“Hm?” she responds.

“How do you know when you’re in love?”

She looks up from her textbook and taps her chin. After about five minutes, she says, “Well, I know I’m in love when I care for someone enough to walk away from them,” she concludes, looking back down at her book.

“What are you, a masochist?” I tease her, shoving her with my shoulder.

“Fine, if you’re so smart, why don’t you tell me how you know when you’re in love?”

I smile at her, “Well, I’d know when I’d actually want to chase after whatever idiotic girl that tries to follow your advice.” She scowls and pushes me over onto the ground.

***

I run out of the classroom in search of my best friend.

I hear sniffling coming from inside the broom cupboard and, carefully, walk towards it.

Katie is crying and holding onto a necklace around her neck.

“You left something behind,” I tell her.

I don’t hesitate to crouch down and rub her back.

“What do you want?” she asks me, tears running down her face.

“You’d tease me if I told you.”

Katie begins to smile, “What’s wrong with teasing?”

“It hurts people.” I reply, smiling back.

Katie moves closer to me, “Then choose not to be hurt,” she whispers.

I pull her face to mine and smile against her lips.
