Chapter 6: Connecting the Dots
[View Online]

I screamed and screamed...and screamed some more until I felt arms wrap around me. I knew whose arms they were. They had held me so many times before.

He let me cry into his chest as people who heard my screams started to gather around and gasp at the sight of Hermione dead on the floor. Even with my eyes closed I could see Hermione's dead body. Her big brown eyes staring up at the ceiling. Her bushy hair strewn across her face as though she put up a fight with whoever killed her. Her mouth opened in shock.

Soon enough Hermione's body was being moved and I was being interrogated by Bennett.

"What were you doing right before you found Ms. Granger?"

"I was in Draco's room. Then I was leaving to clear my head and I tripped over Hermione. I screamed when I realized she was dead." I answered blankly.

"And why did you need to clear your head?" Bennett questioned.

"Draco and I, we-well we kinda got in an argument." I said.

"About what?" He asked.

I hesitated. I couldn't tell him about our fight. Then he would suspect Draco. I'd also have to tell him that Draco had left the room for awhile and he might think Draco went to kill Hermione or something.

"Um, just couple stuff. You know the whole 'you never spend enough time with me' thing." I lied.

"That's it?" He asked raising his eyebrow.

"Yeah, that's it." I said.

"Alright, thank you Ms. Hartley." He said walking away to question a few other people.

Draco walked over to me. "You didn't tell him about what we talked about right?" He asked.

"Of course not." I said. "I don't think you killed Hermione."

"But you think I killed the others?" He asked bitterly.

"What? No. I didn't say that." I said.

"You didn't have to." He walked away from me.

After everything settled down I sat in my room thinking over everything that happened. Who was the killer? How were they killing everyone so easily? Why did they kill Ron in the first place?

I was startled by a knock on my door. "Um, come in." I said hoping to see Draco walk through the door. I was surprised to see Harry. He looked extremely sad. That didn't surprise me. He had basically lost all of his close friends. All he had now was Ginny.

"Hey." He said sitting on the edge of my bed.

"Hey." I replied moving to sit next to him. "How are you feeling?" I asked.

"They're gone." He responded. "Ron, Hermione, Neville, Pansy. They're all gone."

I put my arm around his shoulder. "I know. But we're gonna find out who killed them." I said.

"No, we're not. I know we wont. He's gonna get rid of all of us and move on with his life as though this never happened. I know he will. That's the only way this will ever work out." He had a weird edge to his voice that worried me.

"No, we're going to catch him. We owe it to the others to do so." I said quietly.

He shook his head. "He's clearly one step ahead of us. He watches our every move. He'll know when you figure out who he is and he'll come after you." Harry stared at me intensely.

I couldn't answer, I just stared back at him. "Or maybe he won't kill you. Maybe he likes you." He muttered more to himself than to me.

"Harry, I know this whole thing has got you stressed, but don't worry. We'll figure this out. I swear." I said.

Harry shook his head again. "You can't swear something like that and I won't let you. There's nothing we can do. We're screwed."

"I hope we're not. Otherwise I wasted my time on this." I said half joking, hoping to lighten the mood.

Harry smiled slightly. "I like you." He said.

"I like you too, Harry." I smiled back.

Before I can register what is happening, Harry is kissing me. I push him away lightly. "Harry..."

"Oh, what did I just do?!" He exclaimed. "I'm sorry!"

"No, Harry, its okay." I said.

"I just like you so much and I know I shouldn't because of Ginny and the murders and everything, I'm sorry." He spoke quickly.

"Harry, it's okay, really." I insisted.

"No it isn't. You don't understand. I-I have to go. Goodnight." He quickly walked out of the room, slamming the door.

I sat in the same spot at the edge of my bed, thinking over everything that just happened.
--

Draco hadn't spoken to me in two days. He was avoiding like I killed someone. Pun intended.

I needed to talk to him. I couldn't figure this out without him.

I took a deep breath before knocking on his door. He opened and looked at me for a second.

"What do you want?" He asked.

"Your help to figure out who the killer is." I answered quietly.

"You don't think I'm the killer?" He asked. I shook my head. "Why do you need my help?"

I sighed. "Because you're the smartest person I know." I said.

"Alright, come in." Draco said stepping aside and letting me in.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking and I think I'm close to figuring it out. But I'm missing something." I said.

"And what's that?" Draco asked.

"A motive. Why would someone want to kill Ron? I mean besides you or Hermione no one really had a reason to kill him. It just doesn't add up." I said feeling frustrated.

"Maybe you're thinking about it too much. Maybe you need to take a step back and look over all the details one at a time instead of a whole." Draco suggested.

I took a deep breath. "Yeah you're right. Okay. So the person killed Ron after I left him. After the fight he had with Hermione. That had to be relevant in the murder...unless someone already planned to kill him, they just needed something to happen so it would seem like a lot of people wanted him dead."

"Yeah. And then once they saw that you were the last one with them they thought the easiest thing would be to pin it on you." Draco continued.

"And then when the others started figuring it out, he killed them too...but who is it?" I asked.

"I don't know, but when I find out, I'm gonna thank the bastard." Draco said smiling slightly.

"Why?" I asked confused.

"Because if this never happened, I wouldn't have you and that would be a shame." Draco closed the distant between us and kissed me.

When he pulled away I smiled. "Yeah, I guess that would be a shame." I laughed as I kissed him again.

"I'm sorry I got mad at you babe." He said. "I know it's impossible to trust anyone right now, but I was just so hurt when you didn't trust me and I thought you would turn me in."

"I'm sorry for accusing. I should trust you. You're the only person I can trust, to be honest. I know you would never hurt me." I said.

"I wouldn't." He whispered. I smiled at him.

"Good." I said. "Now, back to this killer business."

"Okay this person managed to kill Pansy, Neville, and Hermione all before you got to them." Draco said. "They knew you guys were meeting up and they knew what times. They were quick with killing them."

"Yeah, and they got away without a trace..." I added in.

"Almost like they were invisible or something." Draco continued. Invisible. That really stood out to me.

"Invisible." I repeated.

"Yeah." He said. "Now can we take a break from this killer business. I missed you like crazy these past few days." Draco said wrapping his arms around me.

"I missed you too." I said, giving into him easily. We kissed as his arms tightened around me. I felt safe like the killer could never get to me when I was with Draco.

His hands slid in my back pocket and pulled something out. "What's this?" He asked. It was a small folded up piece of parchment that I didn't recognize.

I shrugged. "Just some paper I shoved in there I guess." I said. He shrugged also and then put it back.

"I'm gonna go to the bathroom. I won't come back to see you looking through drawers again, will I?" He asked jokingly.

I laughed. "Definitely not." He exited the room and I sat on the bed. Then I pulled out the piece of parchment, curious about what it was. My smile faded when I read it.

Your little boyfriend might not be a killer, but he might be next on my list. Better keep him safe Skyler.

"No..." I whispered. The killer knew we were together. He knows everything. And he basically just told me Draco was next. I knew the closer I was to figuring out who the killer is, the more likely Draco would end up dead. He couldn't help me. I had to do this on my own.

Who was it?! And how did they they get close enough to me to slip that in my back pocket? The thought made me shudder. Not only was the killer watching our every move, but he could get close to us.

My thoughts went back to the invisible thing. I knew I was close. So close. But Draco couldn't know that. Otherwise he would be in danger.

I quickly shoved the paper back in my pocket as Draco came in the room again. He smiled. "Glad to see you're not rummaging through my things."

I forced a laugh. "Yeah, I should go." I said getting up.

"Why?" Draco asked. "It's not because you don't want to be in the same room as me because you think I'm a killer, right?" He asked.

"Of course not." I said walking over to him. "But I'm close to figuring this out. Really close. And I can't-I...I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to you, Draco. I can't lose you too."

"You wont. Look we'll figure this out together and-"

"No, that's the thing. If you figure this out, you're dead. I have to do this on my own. It's up to me. I won't let anything happen to you." I whispered.

Draco sighed. "Okay, fine. But be careful Skyler. I don't want to lose you either." He kissed me and then looked me in the eyes. "I need to tell you something... I-"

"Don't say it." I said. "I can't hear that right now. But just so you know, I feel the same way." I kissed him one last time and walked out.
--

This time I tripped on no dead bodies as I exited our common room. My thoughts were in overdrive. The killer was clearly someone close to us. Someone who knows our every move. Someone who is seemingly invisible.

But it's impossible to be invisible. Unless...unless you've got some sort of invisibility device...like a cloak. There's only one person I know of that's got an Invisibility Cloak...

"No." I said outloud. It couldn't be. Not Harry. But everything pointed to him. The only one who could be invisible. But why would he kill Ron? Before I could think of an answer, I felt something hard collide with the back of my head and everything went black...

A/N: Hi. Sorry this took so long to update. I was taking a bit of a break, but I am back! Soo, what did you think?
