Chapter 2: Investigating
We all looked at eachother. Was I in the room with a murderer right now? I looked over all them, none of them looked like they were capable of murderer at all, not even Draco.
"I can't believe you slept with my boyfriend, Hartley." Granger said wiping her eyes.
"Are you kidding me, Granger?" I asked. "You guys weren't even together. And Pansy sleeps with him on a daily basis, why are you mad at me for doing it once?"
"Skyler!" Pansy exclaimed.
"Sorry." I muttered.
"You probably killed him Parkinson, didn't you?" Granger growled. "He didn't want to be with you anymore, and you couldn't handle it."
Pansy scoffed. "Oh, please, Granger! He told me he was dumping your arse! you probably killed him because of it."
"As if I'd kill my own boyfriend. You know what, actually, it was probably you Malfoy. You're capable of murder."
Draco glared at Granger. "Maybe I am, but I surely wouldn't risk going to Askaban for some filthy blood traitor like Weasley. You should be looking at Longbottom. Jealousy could drive people to do some crazy things."
"I didn't kill Ron. I wasn't that jealous." Neville said. "But Harry has killed before..."
"You honestly think I killed Ron?!" Potter asked. "He was my beer friend, I would never! Besides, Hartley was the last one with him. I don't think that's coincidence."
"Ron was my friend, I didn't kill him." I said. "Honestly I don't think anyone in this room did."
They all stared at me waiting for me to continue. "I mean, come on, Granger wouldn't kill him. She loved him that's why she put up with his cheating. And Pansy wouldn't. He told her that he was breaking up with Granger, so there was no reason for her to be mad."
"And Longbottom, he honestly doesn't even have it in him. And Draco couldn't even be bothered with killing Ron. And Potter was his best friend, he wouldn't do that. And me, why would I kill Ron? I have no good reason."
I paused. "I don't think any of us did it and I know you guys feel the same."
"She's right." Potter said. "I don't think any of us is guilty."
"So where does that leave us?" Neville asked.
"We have to figure out who actually did it." Granger asked.
"And how are we going to do that exactly?" Pansy asked.
"We have to investigate." I said. "It's the only way. Are we all in?"
"No." Draco answered.
"What do you mean no, Draco?" Pansy asked. "We can't blamed for something we didn't do."
Before he can respond, Bennett walks in. "You guys are free to go, but we'll be speaking again." He left the room and Draco stalked out after him before we could say anything.
"Lets meet at the Head's common room at break and talk about this." Granger said.
"Okay, I'll deal with Malfoy."
"Good luck." Pansy muttered as I walked out. I went to my common room to change.
There had been some changes to Hogwarts this year. The Ministry thought we should become more muggle oriented and therefor everyone had to take at least one muggle class. I had chosen Physical Education. Also known as PE.
It was the only class where I didn't have to sit in a classroom for a whole class period.
I changed into a tank top and spandex short and a pair of old Converse. Upon arriving I found out we were playing my favorite game: dodgeball. I looked around and spotted Draco, who luckily was in my class. The perfect time to talk to him.
Today Seamus Finnigan and I were made captains. I got first pick. "Malfoy." I said.
I heard Finnigan groan. Draco and I are the best players and having us on the same team (which is rather rare) was bad news for him and his team. We finished picking our players, and Professor Teames a rather round man with a red face told us to take our sides on what muggles call a 'court'. He placed six balls on the line separating the two teams.
He blew the whistle and people started going after the balls. I was smart enough to know that you risk getting hit if you go for the balls. Apparently so was Draco.
"We need to talk." I said.
"There's nothing to talk about." He said blankly.
"Yes there is." I sad facing him. "We have to find out who killed him. Do you want to get blamed for that?"
"My Father would never let that happen. Besides, doing this is bad news. What if the killer starts in on us? I'm not dying just so Weasley can get some justice."
"Is that's what this is really about? You're scared they're gonna come after you?" I asked.
Draco suddenly pulled me close, our bodies were pressed against eachother. For a crazy moment, I thought he would kiss me, but then I felt a ball brush past the back of my head. Someone had tried to hit me and Draco saved me.
"Who was that?" I asked snatching a ball from Theodore Nott.
"Dean Thomas." Draco answered.
I spotted him and threw the ball as hard as I could. It rammed right into his stomache and he groaned as he doubled over in pain.
"Thomas you're out!" Professor Teams yelled. He didn't have an inside voice at all.
I turned back to Draco. "Draco, please we need you." I said.
"Look, Hartley, I just saved your head. You now you owe me a favor. And the favor is that you stop asking me about this. I'm not changing my mind." He said simply.
I growled and walked away from him. I picked up a stray ball that had rolled near my foot. I looked for my next target. I saw Ginny Weasley standing completely still, with tears in her eyes. She must be torn up over Ron. Through all that, I couldn't help but notice that she was wearing the ugliest black shoes that I had ever laid eyes on.
I decided to put her out of her misery and hit her. She walked off the court slowly. I decided to try Draco again.
"Come on Draco, please." I begged.
"Didn't I tell you your favor was to stop asking me. I'm not helping got it?" He asked stepping closer to me.
I pushed him and he looked at me wildly until a ball flew between us. "Who the hell was that?!" He demanded. Draco didn't like when people tried to get him out.
"Millicent Blustrode." I answers, smirking slightly.
Draco picked up a ball and threw it at her. Even though she was a girl, he showed no mercy. The red ball hit her hard in the arm. She walked off, glaring at Draco.
"I saved you." I said. "Now you owe me."
Draco shook his head. "No, now you've returned the favor." He smirked.
"Look, Draco, I want you to do this because you want to help, not because you have to." I said.
"But I don't want to help and I don't have to, so don't worry about it."
"You are so stubborn." I snapped.
"I'm a Malfoy, what do you expect?" He laughed.
Well he had a point there. "Draco this is your last chance." I said.
He looked me right in my eyes like he was looking right into my soul. "No." He said.
I looked out of the corner of my eye and smirked. A ball was hurling towards Draco's head as we speak and he was too focused on me to notice. Right before it his his face, I caught it. Draco's eyes had widened. We turned to see who had thrown it.
Only Finnigan stood there. Draco picked up another ball, glaring at him. "Shall we?" I asked.
"We shall." He answered. We both threw our balls at him. It wasn't a pretty sight.
Professor Teames blew the whistle again. "Skyler, you win!"
"Yes, I do." I smirked. I turned back to Draco. "I believe I just saved you. Therefore, you owe me a favor. And your favor is to help us find out who the killer is."
He rolled his eyes. "Fine." He grumbled.
I shrugged. "I told you it was your last chance to do it out of your own choice."
"Whatever. But if I die, I'm coming back to haunt you."
I laughed. "Well, I would be insulted if you didn't."
Draco and I were the last ones to enter the room. "Draco, you're actually here." Pansy said in dislbelief.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." He said sitting down. I sat down next to him.
"How did you manage that, Hartley?" Potter asked.
"Persuasion." I smirked. I noticed someone who wasn't there this morning. Ginny Weasley.
Granger seemed to read my mind. "Ginny is going to help us. She really wants to find Ron's killer."
"Great." I said. The more people we had the easier it would be. "So, do you guys think we should tell Bennett about us searching for the killer? I mean we're hardly qualified to conduct a murder investigation."
"We won't tell him until we absolutely have to." Potter said.
"Okay, so what's the stupid plan?" Draco asked. "You do have a plan, right?"
"Yes Malfoy." Granger said rolling her eyes. "We start with the small stuff. See who had any reason to kill Ron, besides us of course. Then we'll go from there."
"Hey, I just thought of something." I said. "What if the person who gave Bennett that anonymous tip about me being the last person who saw Ron killed him."
"You think?" Neville asked curiously.
"Maybe." I answered. "Why else would they have told Bennett and how would they know about the murder so early?"
"Well, did you see anyone else?" Pansy asked.
"No one but Ron." I said shaking my head. "Someone was trying to set me up." I stated.
"But why you?" Draco asked suddenly.
"Because I was the easiest target. I don't think they were banking on five other suspects."
"I just can't believe someone killed Ron." Ginny cried. "It's not like he was a horrible person or anything."
"I know." I said quietly. "He had to have done something to someone that made them really angry."
"Or maybe it was just accident. Maybe the person didn't really mean to." She suggested, wiping her eyes.
"Well if it was an accident I don't have much sympathy for the person because they tried to pin it on me." I stated.
Granger looked at her watch. "We should get going. But look, if any of us find out something we have to tell eachother right away. And don't go around letting people know we're looking for a murderer. It has to appear as though nothing has changed and we aren't working together, okay?"
We all nodded in agreement. "What did you get me into, Hartley?" Draco whispered in my ear.
A few days went by and we were nowhere there were no leads at all. Everywhere I went I looked for clues, but I always came up with nothing.
I was walking back to my common room when I bumped into Pansy. She looked anxious.
"Hey what's up?" I asked.
"I know." She whispered. "I know who the killer is!"
"What?!" I asked. "Who?!"
"I can't tell you here. Meet me at 7 on the seventh floor." She said.
I nodded "Okay."
She walked away quickly. I looked at my watch. 6:05. I still had time to kill.
The whole hour all I could think about was who the killer was. Who could it be? Was it one of us? Was it someone we least expect? Who?
Finally the time came and I practically ran to the seventh floor. I turned the corner to the hall and stopped dead in my tracks and gagged. There was Pansy, but she was hanging from a candle holder on the wall. She had been hung.
I opened my mouth and screamed.
A/N: I like the responses I got for this. I wasn't sure anyone would like this story, but I'm glad you guys do. Crazy chapter right? Any idea who the killer could be? Hope you liked it. Thanks for reading. :)
