I'm Lily Evans. My best friends consist of a drama queen, a psycho, and a cynic. I'm consistantly forced to hang out with the dreadful Marauders.
But worst of all, James Potter seems to think life is some kind of game, and he's winning.

Bring it, Potter.

Chapter 7: To Ella's House We Go
[View Online]

 “Let’s go, freak.”

“Nice to see you too, Petunia.”

My older sister just rolls her eyes. Apparently, she was sent to pick me up from the train station since our dad was busy working and our mom just didn’t feel like it.

“How’s he doing?” I ask as she starts the car and pulls out of the train station.

She knows I’m talking about our father, but doesn’t take her eyes off the road, “I’m not sure. Sometimes it seems like he’s going to do something, like he’s going to finally stand up for himself, but then he doesn’t.”

I just nod.

“I’m never going to be like her,” Petunia says, still not looking at me, “That’s why I like Vernon. He’s not afraid to boss me a little.”

I sigh. I understand that Petunia doesn’t want to be like our mother, but she takes it to extremes with that dirt-bag Vernon Dursley.

We’re silent for the rest of the car ride; ever since I first got the Hogwarts letter we don’t really talk much unless it’s about Mom and Dad.

The tires screech as the car pulls to a stop in the driveway. Petunia presses the button to pop open the car trunk then walks inside, leaving me to bring all my stuff in by myself.

But that’s just how it is at my house.

I drag my trunk in through the door, and then up the stairs to my room where I start to unpack. A woman that has the equivalent of my hair and Petunia’s face with a nose job appears at my door.

“Welcome back, squirt.”

“Hi Mom.”

“So,” she crosses her arms and smiles, “How was school?”

“Good.”

“Anything new going on?”

“Nope.”

She sighs, “Lily, why won’t you talk to me?”

“I’m talking to you.”

“Are you still angry about the argument your father and I had before you left for school?”

“Argument?” I look into her brown eyes for first time since I left for school last September, “Do you really call shouting at Dad and throwing a wine bottle at him arguing?”

“I lost my temper-“

“He needed twenty-one stitches in his shoulder.”

“Don’t interrupt me! You know things are tough for me right now, and I can’t help it if I’m a little stressed out!”

My face loses all emotion, “Okay, Mom,” I turn around and continue to unpack. I know it’s pointless fighting with her.

A little while later, I go downstairs to cook myself some dinner. In the kitchen I see a tall man with smiling green eyes and hair turned gray with stress.

“Dad!” I laugh and run into his arms.

“Hey, Lils!” He smiles, “I’m making your favorite for dinner, tri-tip and mashed potatoes.”

“Yum! Why are you home already? It’s only 5:30.”

“I took off early so I could see you.”

“Henry?” I hear my mother’s voice from the top of the stairs.

“Sylvia! I left work early to catch Lily, since I knew if I got home too late she’d be tired from that train ride.”

“You left work? Are you getting paid for the three hours you took off?” My mother asks accusingly.

“Well, no, but-“

“But we have bills to pay, Henry.”

“I figured I could take some over time tomorrow.”

“Over time? I barely see you as it is, what with you working thirteen hours a day, seven days a week!” She walks down the stairs as she yells at him.

“Mom,” I intervene, “Cut him some slack. He works all those hours because YOU don’t want to get a job!”

“You know about my migraines, Lily! Now, don’t butt into this!”

Dad puts his hand on my shoulder, “Your mother’s right, I can fight my own battles.”

“No, you can’t! All you do is sit there and let Sylvia do whatever she wants!” I exclaim. I decided that calling her my mother was too good for her.

“I gave birth to you, young lady, so you will address me as ‘Mom’!” She shouts.

“Being a mom includes actually raising me, not sitting there popping pills and drinking wine while Dad does all the work!”

“You know about my migraines! That’s it, if you don’t like the way things are done around here, then you can just leave!” Sylvia shouts at me.

“That’s a great idea!” I yell back, and then stomp up the stairs to my room. I throw my trunk open and re-pack my things messily. I run back down the stairs and out to the street; I know just what to do.

My right hand is shaking as I hold it out in front of me, and the Knight Bus swerves down the street into my cul-de-sac.

The man who steps out is in his fifties or sixties, he has a five o’clock shadow and smells like cigarettes.

“My name’s Carl Venicci,” he says with a raspy voice, “Where would you like to go?”

I tell him Ella’s address.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

I gulp as I step off the large purple bus onto the sidewalk and it screeches off down the street, I was finally soaking in the fact that I’d just run away from home.

“Oof!” I hear someone to my left. I turn and see Sirius Black on the ground next to his broomstick, which he’d obviously just fallen off of.

He looks at me, “Lily? What are you doing here?”

“I- err, well I ran away from home.”

“Hey, me too!” Sirius grins goofily, “What a co-winky-dink!”

I raise one eyebrow at him, “Sure.”

Suddenly, the door of Ella’s house is thrown open, “SIRIUS ORION BLACK!”

Yep, that’s her…

Sirius scrambles up off the floor, “Merlin, Moore, how’d you know I was out here?”

She blushes as she walks towards us, “No reason. Wait, Lily? What are you doing here?”

“She ran away from home too!” Sirius smiles, as if excited that he wasn’t the only one.

“WHAT? LILY EVANS, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?”

“Um, I wasn’t really. Y’see my mom-“

“Do I hear Lily’s voice?” the door of James’s house is thrown open in a similar fashion to Ella’s as the messy haired Marauder runs toward us.

Ella looks at him funny, “You could hear her voice from all the way in your house?”

Potter pretends to look embarassed, “It’s a special skill. What’re you all doin’ out here? Is there a party?”

“No,” I sigh, “Apparently Sirius and I both ran away from home at the same time.”

“YOU’RE BOTH GONNA LIVE WITH ME? THIS IS AMAZING! Y’know I just had a dream like this the other night, except that I was eating waffles and Lily was only wearing a-“

“You git,” Ella interrupts him, rolling her eyes, “Lily’s going to stay with me.”

The door on the other side of James’s large house opens, and I see Mary walk towards us, “What’s all the yelling about? Oh, hi Lily,” she barely throws a glance at my runaway-buddy, “Sirius.”

“Sorry, Mary,” Potter apologizes, “I thought that my dreams were gonna come true.”

“Oh gosh,” Mary squeaks, “Not the one with Lily and all the syrup! I still don’t know why you told me about that.”

James giggles, “I need to express myself!”

This is going to be an interesting summer.

“C’mon in, Lily, let’s go situate you in the guest bedroom,” Ella grabs my wrist and pulls me towards her house.

“Don’t you need to ask your parents first?” I ask her.

She scoffs, “They think you’re an angel child, they’ll probably be more okay with you living here than they are with me.”

I laugh. I love Ella’s parents; their household is the poster family for perfection. Her mom and dad are both blonde and blue-eyed, and ALWAYS happy. Their house has tan-ish white walls and carpets that never seem to get dirty, even when you wear muddy shoes. My guess is that it’s some kind of spell.

“It’s so crazy that you ran away from home, Lils, I’d never be brave enough to do that. I mean I wasn’t surprised when I heard that Sirius ran away, but then when I went out to find him and I saw you I was like whuhh-“

“Wait, Ella,” I stop her, “How’d you already know Sirius ran away?”

She blushes again, “I have my ways.”

I look at her suspiciously. What does that mean?

“Lily!” Ella’s mom says to us when we walk in, “What are you doing here?”

“She ran away!” Ella says.

“Would it be alright if I could stay here, Mrs. Moore?”

“Of course!” The kind woman smiles, “And call me Barbara.”

I smile back, “Thank you Barbara.”

“So, Lily,” Barbara asks me as Ella brings my trunk to the guest room, “What do you think of Ella’s new boyfriend? I like him much better than that strange Xenophilius kid.”

“Mom!” Ella shouts from the top of the stairs, and then starts to run down, “Lily doesn’t know about him!”

“Know about whom?” Ella’s dad asks as he walks into the room.

“Don’t say his name!” Ella shouts at her mom before she can say the name of her secret boyfriend.

Damnit.

“Hello, Lily,” Her dad smiles, “What are you doing here?”

“Well, I ran away from home, and I was hoping I could stay here, Mr. Moore.”

“You can stay as long as you like! And call me Steve.”

I nod and smile.

“Alright, let’s go get you set up in your room,” Ella says and we go upstairs.

“Ella, this is getting ridiculous. Tell me who you’re dating.”

“No! I’ll tell you what, every night I’ll let you ask me a question about him, and if you figure it out then you figure it out.

“What’s his name?”

She rolls her eyes, “Not so obvious of a question, dumbnut!”

“I’m not a dumbnut,” I pretend to pout, “Okay, well give me a hint about his name.”

“Fine. His last name is a color.”

I gasp, “YOU’RE DATING SIRIUS?”

“Nope!” She smirks at me.

I glare, “You win this time, Ella Moore!”

She laughs at me, but I just give her a “whatever” face.

“So,” she says as she helps me unpack my things, “We should invite Mel, Cass, and Mary over for a sleepover sometime soon.”

“Yeah, that’d be fun. Ooh, we should arrange it so that it’s on a day when James has all the Marauders over, so that we can have a prank war. That seems to be the popular thing to do nowadays.”

“Wait,” Ella looks at me with a sly smile, “What’d you say?”

“I said that we should have it when Potter-“

“No no, you didn’t say Potter. You said James.”

Crap. I really need to stop doing that.

“Whatever, it’s no big deal.”

“You haven’t called him that since third year when you smooched him!”

I groan, “First of all, I did not smooch him, he smooched me. Secondly, so I called him by his first name, it doesn’t mean I feel any differently about him.”

“Doesn’t it?” Ella winks.

“Okay,” I sigh, “Now you’re acting like Melanie. I don’t like Potter! Got it?”

“Sure, sure. Just ignore what everyone else sees…”

“And what does everyone else see?” I look at her skeptically as I try to properly fold my Siouxsie and the Banshees t-shirt. What? Am I not allowed to like 80s muggle music? I AM a muggle-born!

“Denial.”

I scoff, now starting to get angry at the shirt for not folding right, “I’m not in denial! James Potter is an arrogant, self-righteous pain in the arse!”

“Sure. Lily, I think your problem is that-“

“WHY WON’T YOU FOLD, SIOUXSIE?” I shout at the shirt, not sure if I’m angrier at the inanimate object or at Ella.

Ella sighs, “I’m sorry, Lils, I’m sure you don’t need this after the day you’ve had.”

I cross my arms and stick out my bottom lip, “I don’t need this ever!”

“Okay, okay, I understand.”

We finished unpacking my things and go into her room. Bored, I randomly start going through her closet. And that’s when I see it.

I spin around and look at her, a huge smile on my face, “I KNOW WHO YOU’RE DATING!”

A/N: Oh, I love my cliffhangers. Heehee I’m so excited to write more chapters! Anyways, for this chapter’s character picture, I thought I’d do two of them. This is Mr. and Mrs. Evans-
