Chapter 2: Escape
“Where is she?”
I sigh. The night has barely begun and I’m already sick of my Mother’s theatrics. “Probably seducing a pureblood as we speak,” I drawl.
I have no idea where Andromeda has been sneaking off to lately, so it could very well be the truth. But, more likely, she stayed late at the hospital to save a few extra lives or some other worthless endeavor.
“This is not a joke, Bellatrix,” Mother snaps. “She was supposed to be here an hour ago. All three of you are a major disappointment. Andromeda can’t even bother to show up, Narcissa refuses to dance with anyone, and you’re not much better – off in the corner all night, sulking. If your father were here right now – ”
I yawn, scanning the room and effectively tuning her out. If Father were here, he would no doubt be sulking with me; he hates these frivolous balls even more than I do. Cissy is the only one who enjoys them, and even she’s not having very much fun tonight. She’s circling the dance floor, apparently displeased with the selection of bachelors – none of them have prostrated themselves at her feet in devotion to her beauty so, clearly, they’re not good enough for her.
After Mother wearily declares that she needs another drink (“What else is new?” I retort) and stalks off to the bar, I start prowling across the room. Cissy catches my eye and gestures at the dancing couples, but I’m looking for a little more excitement than that, thank you very much.
Lucius, Evan, and the Lestrange brothers are clustered together by the doorway, their heads bent forward in evident secrecy. I slink into their circle. “Well, well, boys, what do we have here?”
“Nothing you need to concern yourself with, little girl,” Rodolphus says, mockingly. The others smirk.
I move closer to Rodolphus and press myself against him. Then I run my fingers across his cheek and down his body, slowly, until my hand rests on his crotch. “Are you certain you can’t be persuaded to share?” I purr, a sickly sweet smile on my face.
Predictably, Rodolphus is stunned into silence. He’s so easy to toy with, it’s pathetic.
“Must you always play with your food before you eat it, Bellatrix?” Lucius says, unamused. “If you can control yourself long enough, you’re welcome to listen.”
“Good.” I squeeze – hard. Rodolphus yelps and I step back, cackling.
Evan stares at me warily, afraid I’ll go after him next. When I motion for him to continue, the words climb out of his mouth rapidly, as if eager to be heard. “The Dark Lord is recruiting. There’s going to be an initiation of sorts, this weekend.”
I stare at him, feigning indifference to his news. “And you really think this nutter is worth my time?”
Rabastan scowls. “More like we don’t think you are worth his time. Only the most pure and devoted will be accepted.”
“Well, looks like you won’t be making the cut, then,” I sneer at Rabastan. “But he’d be a fool to reject a Black.”
“Will you be gracing us with your presence, then?” Lucius plays peacemaker.
I shrug uncaringly. “We’ll see.”
My heart is already racing with a burning anticipation, but I don’t want them to know. I don’t want them to know that I have been itching for this day, that I have saved every newspaper clipping that mentions him, that I have been clinging to every hushed whisper of this Dark Lord like he’s my saviour - because he is.
With his help, I can finally escape this dull life.
