 Chapter 4

Draco said his piece and apparated out, and Hermione literally fell down to the ground. She didn’t recall standing up and therefore she couldn’t fathom why she was on the ground. She just collapsed. She reached to her eyes and dried the salty tears that threatened to storm out of them, on the fuzzy sleeve of her cashmere sweater. When she looked at the sleeve for a moment, the first thought that registered was a curse word because she had wiped both her black eyeliner and mascara on her light blue sweater sleeve, and it would be a royal pain to get out.

The second thought that crossed her mind was that Draco looked like hell. His blonde hair was extra-long and untempt like it hadn’t been brushed in weeks, and his eyes were blotchy from what looked like lack of sleep.

Then a sharp agonizing pain ricocheted through her entire soul. She missed him and him waltzing into her and dropping that bomb on her only re-opened her finally scabbed wounds. Those wounds had been far from healed but at least closed and on the way, now they were open and gushing again and she didn’t know how she was going to close it.

She picked up the phone and dialed a number that she had memorized even though it had been five years since she called it. She could only hope that on the other line there was still somebody she could call a friend.

She counted the rings. One, two, three, four, five, just as she lost her courage and she was about to pick up, a woman’s voice answered.

“Hello, you have reached the Potter Residence.” In the background you could hear the laughter of children.

“Ginny?’ Hermione whispered, her voice suddenly sore like she hadn’t had anything to drink in days.

“Yes, who is this please.” Hermione took a deep breath mustered up what wasn’t already lost, of her Gryffindor courage and spoke.

“Ginny it’s me Hermione.”

“Hermione Malfoy, the cold hearted Slytherin loyalist, Or Hermione Granger?” The now Icy voice on the other line replied

“Both I guess.” She winced.

“Well what do you want?”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called.”

“Its about Freaking time you called Moine, what were you thinking, that I would hate you or something? I just don’t get why you haven’t called in five bloody years.”

“Uh, Draco wouldn’t let me?”

“What do you mean?” The angry voice had turned to a worried one instantly, and in that instant Hermione knew she still had a friend.

“I mean that the bastard wouldn’t let me have a relationship with my friends and my family, it was one or the other.”

“Oh?”

“I’ve left him Gin. He signed the divorce papers. But Now he has found me again and has started a mission to win me back, and I love him, and miss him, but I can’t gin. I can’t go back to the way it was.”

“Hermione, please don’t even consider it, if he was cruel enough to make you choose between you family or your friends then I don’t want to know what else he did to you in your marriage. Are you someplace safe?”

“Yeah. I’m at my parents’ home now, with Cassie, Oh I suppose you don’t know my baby girl Cassiopeia, but we are safe, only Draco knows where to find me now.”

Ginny mumbled something that sounded a lot like“ Bloody Ferret,” and then said. “Okay we will figure out something, but we have to talk to Harry.”

“No, I can’t spring my issues on him Ginny.”

“You can and you will Hermione Granger. No if and or, buts about it, do you hear me?”

“I hear you.” Hermione mumbled.

“Good. Well I have your number, so I’ll call you when Harry is home and we will come over.”

“Yes, alright.”

“Bye, Hermione.”

“Bye Gin.”

There was a click on the other line, and then a dial tone signaling that the call had ended and the phone was dead. Hermione clicked off her own line of the phone, rose up from the floor and slowly made her way to the kitchen and towards a calming cup of tea.

It wasn’t very calming, because she only had one sip of it when the baby monitor lit up, flashing as it detected sound, and then a piercing scream filled the room.

“Wonderful.” Hermione muttered and ran upstairs to pick up Cassie.
