Chapter 4: From Games To War
[View Online]

If Narcissa Black had wanted, she could have stunned Lucius Malfoy over and over and over to relinquish the distress she was feeling. It was her first day of her last year at Hogwarts, and instead of sleeping comfortably in her plush bed, she was stuck with Malfoy. Malfoy! Of all the people in the entire bloody world, Malfoy.

They silently returned to the Great Hall, where the candles had dimmed themselves to nothing but a subtle glow. The curved flames flickered softly in undefined directions, adding a moonlight feel to the dark and eerie room which was usually so filled with conversation and laughter. If only Narcissa could reach up and pull one candle down, emitting its warmth to her pale, frigid skin.

She silently examined Lucius, who was drumming his fingers lightly along the thick wooden table. He was quite handsome. If it weren’t for his atrocious and reprehensible mannerisms, she might have made an effort to befriend him.

Narcissa yawned once more and put her head down over her arms. Being the outstanding student that she was, she was determined to get at least a few hours of sleep so she would feel motivated tomorrow in her classes, as opposed to the miserable fatigue which was presently enveloping her. Lucius, however, seemed to be anything but tired. He was lost in thought, pondering as he had been for the last hour.

Just as Narcissa was nodding off, a sharp cacophony filled the hall, making her jump abruptly out of her seat. Lucius, it seemed, had sent a mass of silverware flying, making more noise than necessary, and was heading out of the Great Hall.

“Where are you going?” Narcissa yelled, running in his direction, her mind a bit hazy.

“Go back to sleep, Black,” Lucius muttered irritably, continuing towards the door.

“I said,” Narcissa started, pushing her way in front of him, “where are you going?”

“If it really concerns you that much, I’m going to take a walk. I’m not going to sit here for the rest of the night and have my brain boil.”

“Well you can’t just leave me here,” Narcissa insisted.

“Can’t I?” Lucius inquired, raising an eyebrow.

“No, you can’t,” she repeated, digging her fingernails into her palm.

Lucius sighed before motioning towards her. “Come along then.”

Narcissa reluctantly left the Great Hall and followed Lucius. She staggered behind him for a few moments, skeptical as to whether or not venturing into the night with a Malfoy was a wise choice to make.

“And what do you hope to achieve by wandering these halls at dark?” Narcissa whispered as a nearby painting shushed her.

“Perhaps we’ll run into a prefect or a teacher patrolling, and they can help us get back into our common room.”

Narcissa held her gaze on an armored knight that was perched up against the wall. She narrowed her eyes, a small shiver running down her back at the enigma of what this castle was capable of at this time of night.

Approaching the Grand Staircase, Lucius and Narcissa made their way up, Narcissa more hesitant than expected. With no light to guide them, she grabbed hold of Lucius’s cloak, startled.

“What are you doing?” he asked, his voice nettled.

“I can’t see a bloody thing!”

“Well maybe if you opened your eyes-“

“How dare you!” Narcissa exclaimed, outraged. She pulled her hand away, no longer wanting to taint herself with his filth. She marched ahead of him in the pitch black of the night, completely indifferent about stumbling over her own feet.

Consumed in exasperation, it took Narcissa a few moments to realize that the harsh footsteps she was hearing were her own. She no longer heard another pair of feet walking beside her. She stopped in her tracks, drowned in silence.

“Malfoy? Malfoy, if you’re trying to scare me, I swear on Merlin’s long saggy beard I’ll-“

“Lumos,” came Lucius’s voice from the bottom of the flight of stairs. A light erupted from the tip of his wand, a smirk engrossing his face. “What are you going to do? Stun me?”

Narcissa, along with a few now irked paintings, squinted, the light too strong for her eyes.

“Your wand! How did you get your wand?” she gasped, her voice an angry whisper.

“You see, Black, as you were in a great hurry to leave Professor Septima’s office, I was patiently waiting till both of you were gone. I then slipped back inside and retrieved my wand.” His voice was proud, but that didn’t come as a surprise to Narcissa.

“You mean you’ve had it all this time? All through detention? Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I wanted to surprise you,” Lucius replied calmly, his face composed.

“Surprise me? How could you possibly surprise me?” Narcissa laughed.

“Well for one thing, I was never planning on letting you get away with stunning me on the train. You see, Black, in games like these, I always win. Always.”

“What are you going to do, Malfoy? Murder me in the dead of the night? Think I won’t scream?”

Lucius laughed a cold, dry laugh that sent chills down Narcissa’s spine. Apparently he found this amusing. Closing his eyes, he began muttering an incantation, one too low pitched for Narcissa’s ears. A gradual panic began to develop in her chest, rising till she frantically began looking about, waiting for something terrible to happen. She knew Lucius was capable of evil doings, but how far he would go, she had no idea.

Before she could scream out at him, the staircase she was standing on began to shake. With a faint shriek, she sat down on one of the steps to maintain her balance as the staircase split itself away from the rest of the stairs. Slowly and precisely, it flew to the center of the air, simply hovering in place. Narcissa’s eyes were wide with fear.

“I forgot to mention,” Lucius said from below, “I do know the password to the common room. It’s…well what’s the use of telling you now? It won’t really make a difference.”

Smiling cockily, he turned and headed back down the staircase, his light disappearing with him.

“Malfoy!” Narcissa whispered. “Malfoy, come back!”

Tears filled Narcissa’s eyes, her lips quivering slightly. She couldn’t stand the dark, and she couldn’t stand Malfoy. How did he have the heart to leave her stranded in the air all by herself? Oh wait, he didn’t have a heart. Gritting her teeth, she closed her eyes and remembered his words.

“You see, Black, in games like these, I always win. Always.”

This was no longer a game. It was war.
