Chapter 4: In which the Weasley/Potters are not pleased, and the others arent too happy either!
[View Online]

I could feel the eyes following me as I took my customary seat at the Slytherin table. People seemed to give us a wider berth than usual. I just ate my cereal and ignored them. I didn’t look up until Rose slammed her bag down on the table, and grabbed a piece of toast.

“Hey Jade!” she said cheerily. This was a shock. I was convinced she was going to kill me for trying to maim her cousin.

“Err….. you alright Rose?” I asked cautiously.

“Yeah…..why?” She looked at me, confused.

“You’re not mad at me?”

“Why on earth would I be mad at you?”

“Because of what I did yesterday…….”

“Yes, she’s absolutely furious with you for beating up my prat of a brother!” Lily sat down beside me and grabbed a bowl of porridge. “His tongue swelled up so much he couldn’t speak for the whole evening! It was so peaceful!”

My head snapped up and I looked around the Great Hall. Everyone was looking at me, but it wasn’t with the scared look I had become accustomed to, it was like they were in awe of me. Dominique, Molly, Lucy and Roxanne smiled at me cheerily from the Gryffindor table, Louis and Victor Macmillan waved energetically from the Hufflepuff table and the Neanderthals shouted greetings. James Potter was sat in the middle of them, scarlet faced, with his head down.

After breakfast, Fred Weasley sauntered up to me in the Entrance Hall.

“Hey blondie, listen, I feel we got off on the wrong foot. I’m Fred Weasley” he flashed me his sparkly smile and winked.

“Aren’t you supposed to be a red head?” I teased.

“Blame my mother” he shrugged. “What’s your first class blondie?”

“Potions supposed-to-be-redhead, and my names Jade.”

“I’ll walk you there”

“No thanks, I think your cousin would suffer a mental combustion” I pointed to where James Potter was leaning against a stone pillar, glowering at us. I smirked, waved goodbye to Fred, and made my way down to the dungeons.

*********************************************************************

I sat down in an empty seat behind Louis and Victor. Gryffindors took Potions with the Hufflepuffs, so I didn’t have anyone to sit beside. A surprising number of students had passed the Potions O.W.Ls, so there were two classes. Rose smiled at me from her seat in the front row. I wasn’t used to such pleasantries; I was used to being left alone. It was weird to have people smile at me and wave at me, and act like I wasn’t about to bomb the place. Louis swung round and propped his elbows on the edge of my table.

“Lily gave me a minute-by-minutes description of your brawl with a certain Cocky Bastard! I must admit I’m kind of sad I didn’t witness it!” Louis grinned at me.

I grinned back. Christ the Weasley/Potters were a smiley bunch! My cheeks were aching at the thought of all the smiling that must go on.

“I’ll make sure and call you next time!”

“You’d better! Do you know how much satisfaction I would have gotten out of seeing you punch James?” he stared wistfully into space, as if imagining it. I noticed Victor shooting nervous glances back at me, as if debating turning around to talk to me.

“Come on Victor! Don’t be so shy!” Louis grabbed his seat and swung him around to face me.

“I don’t bite! I swear!” I joked.

He laughed nervously. Before I could say anything else, Professor Byram entered the classroom.

“Alright class, open your books to page 35. You should have read up to there for homework and I expect you all to have made ‘The Draught of Peace’ by the end of the lesson. That is a fifth year potion, so I expect you all to make it perfectly. Off you go!”

I dragged my cauldron onto the table, and began.

*********************************************************************

“That was a disaster!” Louis moaned. “I forgot everything I had learned last year the moment I got out of the exam! My smoke ended up being light grey instead of silver!” Louis fretted.

“At least you didn’t have black smoke billowing from yours!” Rose snapped.

“I think the both of you need to breathe and drink some of Jades potion” Victor joked.

I blushed and ducked my head.

“Like seriously! How did you do that Jade?” Rose looked at me, slightly manically. It was well known that Rose and Potions weren’t the best of friends. Rose excelled in every subject, except Potions. She blamed her father. Louis blamed her impatience.

“Rose, if you just left it alone for the required time, it would have turned out fine! I saw you! You took it off the heat after five minutes, and you were supposed to leave it on for fifteen!” Louis chided.

“Yes, because your potion turned out so well!” she retaliated.

We all made our way up to the Entrance Hall. Louis and Victor bade us goodbye and left for Care of Magical Creatures. Rose and I had a free period so we decided to go to Gryffindor Tower and make a dent in the mountain of homework that Professor Byram had set us. Quite a few sixth years were in the common room. Nearly everyone had dropped Divination last year, and Care of Magical Creatures had gotten steadily more dangerous as the years had gone on. I had quite enjoyed the lesson, but Hagrid hated me (curse you father!) and to have the nicest person ever hate you wasn’t the most comfortable thing to endure. I pulled my potions book out of the depths of my bag, and read the task.

Write an essay on the effects of a badly-made Draught of Peace.

I glanced over a Rose, trying to conceal the smile that I knew was dancing around the corners of my mouth. Her nose was scrunched up and she had her quill between her teeth. I recognised this as her ‘deep in thought’ pose, and knew that she got narky fast if you interrupted her when she was concentrating. I decided it was safe to smile, and turned back to my essay.

*********************************************************************

Rose sat with us again at dinner. She kept exchanging glances with Alex, and every so often one of them would giggle or blush. I was very close to stabbing someone with my fork. They weren’t doing too great a job of keeping their relationship on the down-low. Scorpius was cutting his chicken with a bit too much enthusiasm, so that told me he had the same idea, except maybe with a knife instead. I positioned myself as far away from him as possible. I’d had enough injuries.

“Attention students!” Professor Mc Gonnagal walked to the front of the staff table. “As you all know, Gryffindor have decided to host a Quiddich Tournament. The Gryffindor prefects have all agreed that it shall be run on Saturday, the 2nd of October; all teams that wish to participate must sign their names on the roster sheets that have been placed in each common room. Please note that you may not use the house names. ‘Hufflepuff Team’ for instance, will not be allowed. That is all”

“So lads, what’s our team name?” Xavier rubbed his hands together.

“How about sexists bastards that won’t let me play?” I teased.

“Nah! We need something that has a ring to it!” Fergal pulled my ponytail playfully. It still hadn’t gone back to being the jungle, so I had tied it up in a messy ponytail in an attempt to give it more volume.

“Enough joking! We need some proper suggestions!” Alex said seriously.

“How about the ‘Stud that is Scorpius Malfoy and then some other people’?”

“Ok, still looking for serious suggestions”

“How about the ‘Awesomeness that is Scorpius Malfoy and then some other people’?”

“How about the ‘Twat that is Scorpius Malfoy and the poor souls who have to put up with him’?” Rose suggested in an innocent tone, her expression mischievous.

“Not as catchy as my suggestions, but you might be able to build on it Red!” Scorpius winked at her. Rose blew him a kiss, joking of course, but the flicker of hope that flashed across Scorpius’s face was heartbreaking.

*********************************************************************

I left the Slytherin common room earlier than usual that night. Rose and the girls had told me to meet them in the common room in the same corner at half seven. I clunked my way over to them, ignoring the glances (good, bad, or indifferent) I was getting.

“Jade! I do believe this is the first time you’ve been in before curfew since third year!”

I smiled and said nothing. Back in third year, I had been worse than Rose. I never got detention and always handed up my assignments on time. I spent my first three years at Hogwarts desperately trying to prove that I wasn’t like my dad, but then ‘The Week From Hell’ happened and I just gave up, and embraced who I was meant to be, a no good troublemaker. I still handed up my assignments on time. It was one of the two old habits I had a hard time breaking.

I flopped down beside Rose, on the end of the second couch.

“So ladies, what’s up?”

“Well we are just discussing how best to put our names on the roster without catching the attention of our ‘charming’ cousins” Lucy announced from the far end of the couch. I craned my head around Rose and Lily and gawped at her. It didn’t sound right for a fourteen year old to talk like that.

“And anyway, before we do anything, we’ve to think of a team name!” Lily reminded us.

“Well, I was in the library this afternoon-”

“Are you ever anywhere else Rosie?” Dominique teased.

Rose continued on as if she hadn’t heard her.

“And the Neanderthals are calling themselves ‘The Marauders’”

“That’s so not fair! Just because James’s name is ‘James Sirius’ he seriously thinks he owns the right to that name!” Lily ranted.

“What’s the whole thing with ‘The Marauders’?” I questioned.

“Well, my Grandpa James and his friend called themselves ‘The Marauders’ and it’s kind of got a special meaning in our family, y’know?” Lily looked at me.

“There’s a whole chapter on it in ‘Harry Potter: The Full Story’, you can borrow it from the school library” Molly informed me from behind the biggest book I had ever seen.

“Mol, you aren’t even taking Ancient Ruins anymore!” Roxanne said in disbelief.

“It’s for some back round reading if you must know!” Molly snapped back.

“Mol, you’re taking your N.E.W.T’s this year, the time for back round reading has passed!” Dominique rolled her eyes.

On paper, Molly should have really been appointed Head Girl instead of Dominique. Dominique hadn’t even been a prefect, but to be honest, I think the teachers saw what a pain in the backside Molly was, and decided to save the student-body from her many strict regimes.

“Dominique, do you know her at all? Molly won’t rest until she has read the entire library!” Lucy teased.

Molly gave her the finger from over the top of her book. With all her airs and graces, she was as bad as the rest of us!

“Ok ladies, we are going off track here! We are supposed to be thinking of a name!” I reminded them.

“I really wanted to be called ‘The Marauders’” Lily said sadly.

“Well, if we change the ending to the female counterpart, we still could be!” Molly said from behind her book. We all stared at the cover, dumbfounded.

“In English please!” Roxanne snapped.

“Instead of ‘The Marauders’, we can be ‘The Maraudettes’!”

“You see Molly, that’s why we keep you around! You come up with the best ideas!” Rose laughed.

“Well if that’s the only reason” she snapped, but I could see her blushing, even with the book.

*********************************************************************

We all agreed that I should be the one to sign up our names, as I was the team captain. Team captain my left foot, they were just worried about one of their cousins/brothers catching them! I grumbled this to myself as I made my way down to the common room at half past two in the morning.

“Lumos” I muttered darkly to myself. I grabbed a quill from the nearest table. The first years were forever leaving their stuff around the place. I tip-toed towards the notice- board. A neon pink flyer was stuck slap bang in the middle. I pushed my glasses further up my nose (I couldn’t be arsed putting in my contacts just to go down to the common room) and read.

GRYFFINDOR QUIDDICH TOURNAMENT

Betty and the Jets
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
THE MARAUDERS
Team Awesome
Team Super Awesome
Wowza
Beentee
Wuzgoinon
YOU SUCK
Team Lion
Mississippi

I rolled my eyes at some of the names. ‘Team Awesome’ would undoubtedly be a group of first years. I signed our name at the bottom

The Maraudettes

I laughed silently to myself. “Wait until James Potter see’s this” I giggled.

*********************************************************************

The following week, during dinner, Professor Mc Gonnagal stood up again.

“Attention students! Thank you everyone who signed up for the Quiddich Tournament! I know all the teams have been practicing avidly! Now, all the teams have been placed into the Sorting Hat. When your team name is called, I expect all members to assemble into whatever group you are placed. We will begin” Professor Mc Gonnagal pointed her wand at the Sorting Hat. It began to speak.

“Group A will consist of…….” And it began rattling off names. I fell into a bit of a daydream until Rose kicked me in the shins.

“We’re in Group C, come on, we’ve to go to the far corner.”

We stood up and made our way across the Great Hall. Dominique and the rest were already waiting for us. They all looked rather scared. I looked around, and I suddenly saw why. James and the Neanderthals were glowering at them from across the room. Fergal, Alex and Xavier had much the same expression. Long story short, if looks could kill, we were all stone dead. Scorpius didn’t have quite the same look of shock as the rest of them, but he didn’t look pleased. Professor Byram bustled over, and began checking names off on her clip-board.

“Alright, The Maraudettes, where are you?”

Rose raised her hand defiantly.

“We’re here” she said in a rebellious tone.

“Ok, and who is your team captain, Miss Weasley?”

“Jade Goyle” she pointed towards me.

Professor Byram noted my name down, and continued on,

“Alright, Mississippi, where are you?”

*********************************************************************

We all scuttled out of the Great Hall as fast as we could. Luckily, we had been placed near the door, and the boys had been in the far corner. Louis hurtled towards us, Victor in tow.

“Dom! I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” He whined.

“Don’t whine Louis! You know it annoys me! And you would have told the others anyway!”

“No I wouldn’t!” He replied childishly.

“Yes, you would!” Dominique retaliated.

They bickered back and forth until I interrupted them.

“I hate to interrupt this whole brother, sister thing, but there are some pretty angry people coming towards us.

“On the count of three?” Molly suggested.

“Forget that! Just run!” Lily screeched.

We all ran helter skelter, in different directions. I grabbed Lily’s arm, flung open the
Main Door, and sprinted across the grounds.
