Chapter 8: Chapter Eight
[View Online]

The meeting finished and Lily and I walked back to the common room. I could see on her face that something was bothering her. Putting my hand on her shoulder to make her stop she turned to face me. She wrapped her arms around me pulling me closer to her.

“Why were you late Lils? You’re never late to those things.” I ask her, I can feel her shaking against my body. I then feel her tears drenching my shirt but I don’t care, “Lily why are you crying? You’re supposed to be happy today.” She pulls back from me but I don’t let go of her.

“James, when I ran off this afternoon I went to find Severus.” I nodded but I couldn’t say anything. He did something. Something that upset her and I have a feeling I’m not going to like it. “I followed him to the room of requirement. When I found him he had his wand pointing at me but I calmed him down and we talked but then…then he…he…” She took a deep breath. I noticed that she gripped in my upper arm had tightened. “First he said that he thought it was a mistake to marry you, I tried to make him see that it wasn’t and that I loved you no matter what had happened in the past. I was crying and he whipped away some tears and then he…he leant in and…” I cut her off.

“He kissed you.” I said bluntly. I wasn’t going to hold it against her. He might be a little more messed up then usual but it wasn’t her fault, he was in love with her and everyone but she knew it, I think.

“NO! No I stopped him but he would have. I’m sorry” I felt all the tension leave my body at her words and then I pulled her closer to me, resting my forehead against hers.

“Then why are you sad? Nothing happened and I would still love you even if it did! I will always love you no matter what.” This time I whipped her tears away from under eyes as I watched her entire face lift as she smiled. She leant her head back slightly kissing me. The kiss deepened as the portrait opened and I heard Sirius’ voice.

“Opps, Sorry you too!” Sirius gave his usual dog bark laugh. I make a mental note to make him pay for interrupting us then take Lily’s hand and lead her into the common room.

“We have about two hours till graduation so the parents will arrive in about an hour and a half, that’s when we should be ready by.” I looked over to Sirius who was not listening because I mentioned parents. His weren’t going to show up today, I knew it and so did he; no matter how hard he tried to hide it I knew he wished it was different.

“An hour and a half?!” Lily half screamed. “I have an hour and half to get ready!” With that she ran off to her dormitory leaving the boys and me standing in the middle of the common room. She reappeared about thirty seconds later giving me a kiss then speed off again so the boys and I made our way slowly to get ready for the graduation and dance that would come after it. The dance was being held on the seventh floor so the rest of the school could enjoy the Leaving feast. After that finished we would join the sixth and fifth years down in the Great Hall while the parents left and then we would party as long as we could without being told off. It was going to be the best night.

Graduation. The last thing we will have to do before we leave. As McGonagall lines as up, I stand beside Lily her hand in mine as long as I can. She now has free tears streaming down her face at the prospect at being gone from school forever. McGonagall ignores the fact that I’m not in line right up to the moment when Dumbledore is calling us across the stage to collect our N.E.W.Ts from him. She shuffles me to my place as Sirius is called up on stage. I hear a massive scream and loud clapping coming from the crowd but when I see my head turn towards the crowd I see my very own parents standing while clapping. My mother was already crying. Sirius gave a big wave and as he walked off to the other side he blew a kiss to the crowd. Names were called, people went on stage to collect there marks, they all waved and smiled but it was extremely boring. I was somewhere else when Lily’s name was called and it pulled me back to the present.

“Miss Lily Evans, Our Head Girl”

More screams and claps from the crowd, from who I’m guessing was her mother and father. Lils smiled and walked across the platform. Dumbledore shook her hand and clapped along with the rest of the crowd and students. I smiled as I watched her retreating form. She was out of school now, no more lessons or waiting for marks. I watched as she walked over to Sirius standing on the other side who hugged her. She looked up towards the rest of us still waiting to get our marks and to graduate. She smiled when she caught my eye and a tear slid down her face, she whipped it away still looking at me. I felt myself smile back at her. More and more of our class was called. Eventually moony was called, then Peter and finally myself.

“Mr James Potter, Our Head Boy”

I smiled as I heard the unmistakable screams of my mother and the yelps from my father.

“Congratulations James, you’ve done well this year.” Dumbledore smiled at me as he handed me the envelope that held my marks.

“Thank you sir” I walked off the stage giving a brief smile to my parents. Lily met me at the bottom of the stairs, when I reached her I picked her up and swung her around. We walked to the area were all the seventh years who had got their marks were supposed to wait. Sirius and Remus both gave me a hug but Peter wasn’t anywhere in sight. After about five minutes Lily and I were called back onto the stage to give our heads speech.

As Lily started to speck you could tell just be the quietness of the crowd that her words were reaching everybody.

“Thank you Professor Dumbledore. Well seventh years, we did it! We finally got to the end of our schooling career. There is no more of skiving of class and work because we just don’t feel like going. We have to go out into the world and use the skills we have learned and mastered to make something of ourselves. Who knows what will become of us all in ten years’ time but one thing I do know that these seven years with you all have been amazing and I can’t thank you enough for making them great. I know that we will go out into the real world friends and that in 10 years’ time when we come back here for a reunion we will see each other changed, hopefully for the better.” She stepped back allowing me to move forward.

“We have to thank our teachers because without you all we would have got nowhere, wouldn’t have learned anything and would not be standing here today. We thank them for their support during our major exams and the major parts of our schooling lives. Lily and I personally want to thank all the prefects for helping us this year but mostly just our peers. You have truly made this year great so thank you.” Lily and I retreated from the stage as the crowd clapped and cheered at our speech, we were both clapped for when we got back to the rest of our class. That’s it. We’re done. Finished. Our schooling is over; all that’s left to do now is party and go home.
