CHAPTER 7 – THE ART OF FLYING

Closing my eyes I breathe in slowly. I lift my hands in meditation and sway side to side. Humming softly under my breath I allow peaceful thoughts to enter my brain.

“What are you doing?”

Damn it. I swear it was working this time.

Peeping under my lashes I frown at a certain red head that is hovering anxiously at the end of my bed. I would have thought it was obvious.

Turning my sigh into a loud hum I use my right hand to point at my book and close my eyes. Peaceful thoughts.

“Unlocking the mysteries of the mind, an interpretive look into awakening forgotten things.” Lily reads out loud jarring me out of my dreams of pancakes.

“Sounds dull. Where did you get it?”

I huff in annoyance and cross my arms over my chest.

I. Give. Up.

“James, he dropped it off when he visited this morning, said his mum sent it to him in the post.” I answer before holding out my hand for my book.

“Potter” Lily raises her eyebrows and looks at me in surprise.

“Who would have thought?” I roll my eyes at her and huff again. So far the book hasn’t helped in the slightest, the only thing it unlocked is a major headache, but you never know people say seventh times a charm.

Lily sits it down on my bedside table just out of reach. Stupid bloody broken foot. You would have thought that Madam Pomfrey would have been able to fix it in a jiffy, seeing as she is a witch and all, but no. Apparently I had not only broken my foot, I had also dislodged the bone and now had to spend the rest of the following day sitting in the hospital wing waiting for the bones in my foot to be re-aligned.

Apparently it would have been easier to fix if I had no bones.

“I wanted to talk to you actually.” Lily began, sitting herself in one of the chairs beside my bed.

Resisting the urge to tell her that we are already talking, I nod silently.

Lily sits up straight and gives me a long look.

“He likes you, you do realise that?”

I frown and stare at Lily. What the hell is she talking about?

“Sirius, he likes you.” Lily states. Tacking one look at my confused expression she sighs. “A lot.”

“What are you…?”

“I’m just telling you so you can be careful, you don’t remember the last time you guys went out but I do. I know you’ve heard all the gossip about him and the other marauders but you need to understand that Sirius is not much more then a player.” Lily looks at her hands and sighs.

“You’re probably just mistaken, we’re just friends and anyway I’m not stupid.” I say crossing my hands across my chest. I know he’s gorgeous and all but he is also arrogant, immature, kind, sexy and… SHUT UP BRAIN!!!

“What about last night, the way he comforted you? He hardly left your side till James dragged him away.”

“So...”

“Just be careful, I don’t want to see you broken again, not now.” Lily whispers giving me such a sad look that makes me wan to hug her.

“Was it that bad?” I ask. I’m kind of hoping that she’s joking.

“Well you really did love him.”

Oh.

That’s kind of awkward.

And weird.

How could I forget about being in love with someone? How could I forget my mum’s death? I guess these are questions that are best left unanswered.

“Lily.” I whisper playing with a strand of hair as I refuse to meet her gaze.

“Did you know about…? Did you know about my mum?” I whisper. At least the tears have stopped; I don’t think I could have handled it.

“Yes. Professor Dumbledore asked me not to mention anything. I think he was hoping that your dad would come to break the news; I wish I had just told you. It would have been better then Melissa.”

Lily glares angrily at her hands and I can tell that she is really upset with herself.

Patting the side of my bed I motion for her to come over. Sitting next to me she slips one arm around my shoulders and gives me a sad hug.

“I’m so sorry Amy.” She whispers. There are little tears dripping down her nose and onto my arm.

I hug her back and lean against my pillow.

“So devil mummy’s called Melissa? I wouldn’t have thought that.”

Lily lets out a choking sound that reminds me of something between a laugh and sob.

“Yeah, I only met her once before but you told me enough stories to make me want to rescue you from her evil clutches. She’s a witch by the way.”

My weak attempt of laughter stops with shock.

“Tell me what happened.” I murmur.

So Lily begins to talk.

My mother Jocelyn Winters had passed away on the 18th of March two years ago. As she always did each Staurday, my mother was working an afternoon shift at her little flower shop when she was murdered. My dad never called her by her first name, instead insisting on Josie. I guess she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and now she is gone. Apparently Lord Voldermort, the man that Remus had been reading about in the papers had decided to shake things up a little and sent some of his followers to cause some damage in the muggle world every now and again. My mother was the first to die.

A year after that my so called dad went of and got himself hitched to some divorced witch that he had met once when he dropped me of at the trainstaion for Hogwarts.

I hate that he just let mum go.

Turning towards Lily I Squeeze my eyes shut to stup new tars from falling.

“Why did they kill her?” I whisper as Lily stops telling my story.

“I don’t know.”

“Amy are you sure you’re read for this?” Calls Sirius. I can practically hear the worry leaking from his voice.

“Yeah, my foot’s fine, I was let out two days ago.”

Sirius swings his broom over his shoulder and frowns.

“That’s not what I was talking about.”

I put my hands on my hips and give him a stern look.

“I’m fine, you don’t have to worry.”

And I’m not lying; I gave up moping two days ago after spending the rest of my afternoon crying through three boxes of tissues and a box of chocolates (curtesy of Lily, girls it seems keep a couple of boxes handy for when we go through emotional breakthroughs, like boys and menstrual cycles). Lily had helped me with the tissues as we both shed enough tears to fill the black lake twice.

Sirius gives me a half smile and I find it hard to concentrate on much else. I’ve decided to put my heart in a box when he is concerned, I’m not up for getting emotional anytime soon and from what I gathered from Lily and the many opinions of my dorm he is only trouble.

“Hurry up Sirius, I thought you wanted to teach me.” I called swinging the broom I had borrowed from Mary who had easily made it on the gryffindor team as a new beater with Sirius. According to James the Gryffindor team is unbeatable.

“Okay, do you remember what I told you, keep your arms steady and…”

“Grip the handle gently with my right hand in front.” I answered smartly flashing him a know-it-all grin that I have copied from Lily.

Sirius glares at me.

“Alright, but make sure you…”

“Keep my back at an angle to the broom and lean slightly forward to go up otherwise I will most probably fall of and that won’t be pretty.”

Sirius sighs and looks away. I can tell he is trying to hide his grin.

“Glad you understand, don’t want to have to save you know do I?” He smirks placing his fist against his chest in a way I think is meant to look heroic.

“Ok.”

I look at the broom in my hands and grip it like I was told to. Why the hell am I doing this? I must have a death wish or something.

“Umm, you’re allowed to kick of any time soon Amy.” Called Sirius giving me a well practised grin.

I don’t think he gets the fact that I’m completely terrified. What if my clumsiness kicks in and I do something stupid? Like fall of and die.

“Right.”

I’m still on the ground. I can feel beads of sweat form on the base of my neck. Crap, crap, crap why the hell did I agree to this. Oh right Lily forced me. I’ll kill her and her mixed messages.

Sirius smiles and walks towards me, placing a hand on my shoulder he looks me in the eye.

“You don’t have to fly if you don’t won’t to. I just thought…”

Shaking his hand of I set my teeth.

“I can do it.” I murmur under my breath.

I think Sirius gets the message because he turns and walks a few step away so I have room.

I actually do want to be able to fly, it always looked so graceful on the ‘bewitched TV shows’ I would watch with mum when I was little… She would laugh at me if she saw me right now, half way between soaring and begging the ground for mercy.
Closing my eyes I kick of.

I’m not dead.

Yeah.

Peeping carefully under my lashes I gasp as I see the view. I’m already about ten feet up into the air and rising steadily.

“Lean forward Amy.” Sirius is hovering anxiously next to me. I think he’s still worried I’ll fall of.

Leaning forward quickly I shoot across the pitch leaving a startled Sirius behind. This is fun. Pulling the broom upwards I fly into the air zooming back the way I came.

What the hell was I frightened of this is awesome. It’s like one of those dodgy roller coaster rides that send tingles through you’re stomach except I’m controlling it.

Diving towards the ground I hear Sirius call out from somewhere behind me. I guess it must look like I’ve turned suicidal. Pulling the handle up at the last minute I shoot upwards into an arc.

Hey I wonder if I can do a loop the loop?

“Hey Amy.” Someone is waving frantically from the pitch. It can’t be Sirius as he is hovering protectively beneath me, his anxious face begging me to slow down and take in the fact that I’ve never actually flown before.

Pushing the broom into one last dive I pull it up slightly and tumble lightly onto the grass. Panting heavily I grin as a face appears above me.

“If I knew you were going to jump of your broom I would have waited for you to come down.” Christian is smiling happily down at me his eyes I realise are actually a light green.

Pretty.

Taking his hand I stand up and brush the grass of my pants. It’s a good thing I left my skirt in the dormitory.

“So what have you been doing?” Christian laughs.

“Flying. What do you think?” Growls Sirius as he lands heavily next to me. Swinging his broom over his shoulder he glares angrily at the other boy.

Ignoring Sirius I turn and roll my eyes.

“Sirius is teaching me how to fly.”

“Doesn’t look like you need much help.” Answered Christian giving me an odd look.

“Amy you want to head back it’s getting dark.” Sirius growled digging his shoe into a patch of dirt. What the hell is his problem?

“Come on.” Motioning for Christian to join us. I frown as he looks at Sirius and shakes his head.

“Nah I’m going to hang around for a bit, promised Samuel I’d help him with his transfiguration essay. You two go ahead.”

Sirius utters another growl and grabs my arm pulling me along as he walks. Giving a wave to a rather bemused Christian I turn and yank my arm out of Sirius’s reach.

“What the hell was that for?” I mutter poking him in the ribs to get his attention.

“I don’t like him.” Sirius grumbles ignoring my frown as we walk.

“Why not, he’s nice.”

“I just don’t.” Sirius gives me an apologetic smile and runs his fingers through his hair.

“That’s not a real reason.” I run ahead and turn facing him so I can watch his face as I walk.

Sirius sighs and points at something in front of me. I’m not falling for that, it’s the oldest trick in the book. The, oh there’s something behind you.

Sighing again Sirius gently pushes me to the side as a third year carrying a small mountain of books wobbles by. Guiding me through towards the common room he gives me an annoyed look.

“He’s a prat.”

I think about this as I slowly walk up the stairs.

“So are you, but I don’t have a problem with that.” I answer sticking my tongue at him.

Sirius just grins and mutters the password. Turning around so I can get into the common room I sigh.

“See you later Sirius.” I called waving a hand over my shoulder.

“See ya love.” He calls.
