Summary:

I liked my life.

Ok, so my best friend was my homework, my favorite time of day was during classes and my personality was bordering dangerously on insipid.

Then I met Albus Potter.

Chapter 8: On The Run
[View Online]

I was trying to finish my transfiguration essay.

Trying being the keyword here.

“Katie?”

Maybe if I ignore him he’ll go away.

“Katie!”

“KATIE!”

What Albus?!”

“I can’t find my quill.”

Why am I friends with this boy?

I reached for my bag, pulled out a spare quill and flung it at his head.

He caught it.

It is at times like this that I remember why I don’t especially enjoy Quidditch.

It’s been a week since the party incident in the Room of Requirement. That’s what it’s being called- ‘the party incident’. It was a Saturday and under normal circumstances, we would have been in Hogsmeade. But, alas, here I was; stuck in the library trying to finish an essay which wasn’t even due for another week.

“Al!” someone called. This caused the whole library to turn and glare at the source of the noise. Of course, when they saw that it was James Potter, all was immediately forgiven.

“I need your help,” James said, sitting down opposite us. Al raised an eyebrow.

“Ok, first of all, hi. Nice to see you too,” Al said.

“Yeah, ok. Hi. Now come on!” James said impatiently.

“Manners, James,” Al said tiredly. “Don’t you remember what Mum said about-“

“Of course I remember what Mum said, Al-“

“Then why aren’t you-“

“Do we really need to have this conversation here-“

“-because you know I’ll have to write to her if-“

“No you don’t-“

“-I promised her that-“

“Are you threatening me?”

“I’m just saying-“

“Uh, guys?” I tried to interject. They both turned to look at me, slightly annoyed.

“What?” James asked tiredly after a moment of silence.

Wordlessly, I pointed to the entrance of the library. Filch, the caretaker from hell, was standing here glaring daggers in our direction.

For a squib, that man sure does have a long life.

I should look into it.

We might have another Voldemort on our hands. I mean, he totally had the whole ‘evil’ this figured out.

Great, now he’s walking towards us. Clearly, James had gone and done something stupid. He was Al’s brother, so I wasn’t really surprised.

I opened my mouth to declare my innocence in this whole mess when sparks shot out of Al’s wand next to me. They hit Filch right in the chest, and he fell backwards.

“Run!” Al screamed at James. Together, the both jumped up and started to make a break for the door. From the floor, a cursing Filch reached out and grabbed James’ leg, sending him crashing down. Al was halfway to the door when he realized James wasn’t behind him. He spun around. However, before he could move there was a blast and Filch and James were both flying backwards in opposite directions; James towards the door, and Filch right into a shelf of books.

I stared at the scene with wide eyes.

Everything froze for a moment.

Then I realized that the blast had initiated from my wand.

Suddenly, I knew what I had to do.

Leaving my bag and essay on the desk, I ran for the door. James was right behind me.

“Blasted students! I’ll get you, I will!” Filch was yelling behind us, burying his way out of the pile of books.

“C’mon Al. RUN!” I cried in his face. He seemed to be frozen in his spot, clear green eyes wide and fixed directly on me.

The urgency in my voice seemed to bring him back to the present and together, the three of us sprinted out of the library.

It was not fun. Every single student seemed to be walking in the opposite direction that we were running in. Filch was screaming obscenities at us from close behind. James was ahead of us, leading the way to Merlin knows where.

“Where are we going?” I gasped at Al.

“Just run!” he cried.

Suddenly, James turned a corner. Al seemed to have predicted it, because he grabbed my hand and pulled me around the corner.

I was beginning to feel like a criminal, with all the hexing and the running. It was pretty cool.

Then, of course, as Murphy’s Law would have it, we ran straight into someone.

I had a wind knocked out of me for a moment. I knew Al and James were on the floor too from all the cursing.

“What is wrong with you, Haverford?”

Oh Merlin, I know that voice.

I sat up and looked into the scowling face of Anna Gordon. To her right lay Jessi Ling and Tabitha Braun. I felt my heart drop.

We had just run head first into The Bitch Clique.

Remember them? You know, the three human beings whose sole goal in life seemed to be to make my entire existence as miserable as they could?

Yeah, them.

“Argh! You are so uncoordinated!” Jessi snapped.

“Excuse me, who are you?”

My eyes widened at the sound of Al’s voice. This was not good. They hated me, sure. But if they knew Al didn’t, they’d just hate me more.

They’d probably try to turn my hair blue again.

Great.

All three of them looked shocked. I don’t know if they were shocked that Al was defending me, or because he didn’t know who they were. Probably both. Anna was the first to regain her composure.

“Anna, remember?” she said sweetly.”We did out Potions project together in second year.”

She was fluttering her eyelids at him. Funny, she was just about ready to rip my head off about ten seconds ago.

“I think there’s something in your eye,” Al said flatly. Oh, no. No no no no no.

“There you are!”

All six of us spun around. Filch was standing right behind us, a disgustingly gleeful look on his decaying face.

“Er…Excuse me?” James said awkwardly. All of us, including Filch, turned to look at him.

“I think you dropped your…” he trailed off.

James was holding up… toilet paper?

My head snapped to Tabitha, whose head was moving slowly downwards to her boobs, a look of horror on her face.

The left one was now bigger than the right. I kid you not.

James handed Tabitha her toilet paper back with a slightly pained look on her face. Al was diligently picking at the dirt under his nail.

Then, Filch began to whistle.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, would be a story to begin with the phrase ‘The awkward moment when…’
