Chapter 7: Connecting the Dots
It was late when Harry finally got to St Mungo's, nearing midnight. The hospital was silent, not including the coughs and mumbles from sleeping patients and the quiet chatter of healers working the night shift. Harry muttered a number of curses to himself the whole way down to the morgue, berating his choice to finish the paperwork before going to see the healer in charge. At the time, it had seemed like a perfectly good idea to see him before going home. However, he hadn't taken into account just how tedious paperwork could be. Although, he inwardly admitted to himself, he had also been waiting for a call from David.†
One never came.†
Harry opened the left of the double doors and stepped into the morgue, hesitant. The place still gave him the creeps and he knew he would never get used to it, no matter how many times he came. "Hello!" He called, waiting a few seconds for the sound of any footsteps come his way. "Healer Graham?"†
Harry sighed, his shoulders slumped; he'd missed the man. He'd gone home. Harry turned to leave, deciding to come back in the morning. "Auror Potter?"
"Yes." Harry stepped back inside. He shook hands with Graham, smilingly warmly; he'd known and worked with the healer many times over the years. His smile dropped when he noticed the man's grim look. "What's wrong, Tim?"†
"It's about tonight's victim," he said softly. "There's something you need to see." Graham led the Auror to the metal slab the furthest away and stopped just in front of it. He waited for Harry to reach him. "Brace yourself, Harry. I know you and he were partners; it may come as a shock."†
Harry's eyes widened before the healer even had a chance to pull back the white sheet, and he shook his head, refusing to believe it. "No."†
Graham pulled it back. "That's not possible," Harry protested, stepping back. "It's not true!"
Graham lifted up the chart on the side, opened it to the first page and read the victim's details out loud for Harry to here. "David Samuel Malloy, 24 years old, born and raised in London, until his family moved to France when he was fourteen." He closed the file again, watching Harry sadly. Harry looked like he was going to be sick; his face was pale, with a thin layer of sweat dripping down his cheeks. The room was suddenly too hot, but he didn't seem to have the strength to leave. "David was a Gryffindor at Hogwarts, before tranferring to Beauxbatons. We got all of this information from his file when we did a sample of his DNA. Everything except his house; I remember you telling me he was two years older than Teddy. David showed him around in his first year."†
Harry breathed in and out slowly; he remembered the story. He remembered receiving Teddy's first letter and hearing about the 'nice boy called David who showed him around'. It was understandable that Ted never said anything more about him; David had his friends and Teddy made his own. And David moved away not long after his godsonís second year, transferring to a different school, which was why he hadn't known about the accident. Harry placed his hand on his partner's cheek and frowned. "There was something wrong with his face when we - when he was found."†
"A stinging hex; the killer obviously didn't want him identified so soon. He wasn't stabbed like the others, he was beaten to death."†
Harry let out a sort of strangled sob, but wiped the tears away, refusing to believe the man in front of him was David, that he was dead. "But he was with me; he's been on the case. I was walking David home when we found the body. It can't be him. Explain that to me!"
Graham went to pull the sheet back; covering him, but Harry's arm stretched out, almost instinctively, and stopped him. "It could have been some sort of Glamour charm, a powerful one, I can't really say. All I know is that whoever you were with was impersonating your partner because this is David."†
Threading his hand through David's hair, wiping his fringe from his eyes, Harry just nodded. He knew it was true. "A Glamour charm," he muttered. "Or -" He stopped, suddenly remembering. He went through the last month in his head; every moment with his supposed partner and it all made sense. It also didn't make any sense. He looked Graham in the eye. "Or a Metamorphmagus."†
He didn't say anything else; he walked out. He needed to go back the Ministry.†
Using his wand to unlock the door, Harry made his way into David's office and made sure to lock the door after him. He didn't need anyone's interference, even if it was only a couple of security guards and the odd ministry worker who were still in the building. Harry searched the office, looking for anything he could find that would prove his suspicions, then sat behind the desk and pulled open the top drawer, found nothing and went to the second.†
He stopped and frowned, then pulled out the thick, brown folder he found. He scoffed when he read the note on top.†
I knew you'd figure it out, Harry.†
He spent the rest of the night going through the file. He went through names, faces, causes of death as well as other crime related incidents. Everything except where to find the man responsible. It didn't take long for Harry to figure out what all the highlights names meant, to see what he had seen; that it was the same person. So this was what he had been doing in his spare time; solving the case himself. And he left everything for Harry, because he knew Harry would find it. But why?†
Why didn't he just say, rather than hide?†
Harry rubbed his eyes, completely exhausted. What was the point of all this? What the hell was he waiting for?
Harry dropped his hands slowly and looked up, noticing, for the first time, the calendar and, more importantly, the date circled in red ink, which looked an awful lot like the ink used to write the messages.†
I'll make it a night you'll never forget.†
"Halloween," Harry whispered, connecting the dots at last. "Oh, you always did like to make an entrance."†
A/N: And Harry knows everything now. So, there's only a few chapters left - 10 total, I think. But don't hold me to that.
Would really love to know what you think. :)
