Mother’s in the making

Erin, Jasmine, Clara, Helena, Polly, Summer, Lauren…

The same list of names had been spinning through my head since the day I found out I was having a girl. Reading over and over the same baby naming books I soon found a list of favourites developing within my head although picking between one or the other to me seemed like the impossible task.

…Tasha, Isobel, Lisa, Claire, Leah, Alice…

Flicking through the pages of the book didn’t seem to be helping the predicament either, more names jumping out at me each time I turned to a new one. I added more names to the list as I read through a few more pages, ready to show my family at a later date, well not that they were really that bothered, I mean they’re response is always ‘What ever makes you happy’. It infuriates me.

…Elizabeth, Amelia, Georgia, Chloe, Jessica, Megan…

I sighed as I placed the book on the arm chair next to my swollen body, realising the actual extent of the list which had now spread over four foot of parchment. Picking up the edge which was trailing on the floor, I laid it on my stomach crossing off the ones which now just seemed ridiculous.

...Diana, Holly, Laura, Hannah, Shannon, Grace…

It didn’t seem to help matters though, even after I’d managed to probably eliminate half there were at least three hundred left on the list. I didn’t quite understand why picking the name was so much trouble, it was meant to just jump out at you but in my case it seemed that the baby was making this as hard for me as she possibly could. Another high maintenance Weasley child, Teddy often referred to her as. I guess I didn’t mind that much but sometimes I just wished he’d offer more input into the whole idea.

…Olivia, Sarah, Jade, Lydia, Teagan, Joanne…

More names just kept popping into my head as I thought about how close I was to becoming a mother. It was scary really to think that in just over a month, I’d have a tiny little baby here, one who depended on me for everything, including choosing a name for her. I sighed as I picked the book up again, I didn’t like being this unprepared, being a Ravenclaw I’d always been able to be completely organised but this time I couldn’t, which made me feel so out of my comfort zone.

…Ruby, Sofia, Scarlett, Katie, Emma, Lola…

The quill scratched furiously across the page, trying to get as many names down as possible. Teddy would just have to go through them later I thought to myself as the parchment quickly returned to the four feet in length. It was his baby as much as mine, well although I knew I’d probably get my own way with choosing her name, especially because me and Teddy could hardly agree on which radio station to listen to. I won that argument so many times a day.

… Amy, Millie, Keira, Ellie, Zoe, Natasha…

I allowed myself to smile a little as I thought about the radio station I always used to put on just to annoy Teddy, even when we were at Hogwarts, it was just our thing. The clock chimed three in the afternoon as I finally placed the piece of parchment down, instead hauling myself up to waddle in the kitchen to grab some much needed food

…Lucy, Daisy, Freya, Lily, Emily, Poppy…

The names just kept coming as I turned on the stove to cook some potatoes, I was completely addicted to them, especially when they were sauted, well the baby liked them anyway. The pan sizzled as I pointed my wand to flick the potatoes into the air as I tried to brush all thoughts of names from my head, it had been comsuming me for the past three months, still not being able to find a name for the perfect little girl.

…Skye, Ella, May, Bethany, Amber, Madison…

The sizzling of the pan became more vicious as I lowered the flame to the stove tipping the potatoes from the frying pan onto a plate. Grabbing a fork from the drawer, I picked up the plate, taking it back to the settee which still contained the imprint of my body. I didn’t really tend to move around a lot these days, I couldn’t balance very well and staying up on my feet for too long was just impossible with the size of my ankles.

… Tia, Faith, Sofia, Lacey, Ruby, Ellie…

More name spun around in my head, whilst I over analysed every single one. I managed to find reasons why each of them weren't perfect, as I stabbed the fork into the potatoes bringing each one individually to my mouth, savouring ever bite. I had nothing else to do these days, using just the little things to waste time. Bed rest was one of the worst things ever, especially because I was so active, I missed being in the hospital, being a healer but I couldn’t do a lot in my condition. In a way I just felt useless and slobbish although I knew it wouldn’t be for long because I’d be running around after a baby soon.

…Matilda, Esme, Carla, Alex, Harriett, Nicole…

Giving up on the whole idea of trying to eliminate names from the list, I picked up the two knitting needles next to the arm chair. I had hated knitting for as long as I could remember, but as soon as I’d been banned from work I took it up, I guess it was a way to pass the time when Teddy was at work but nana had sent me so many patterns it was just hard to resist especially when you saw how cute the garments came out as.

…Tara, Penny, Tia, Angel, Oregon, Kayleigh…

More and more names entered my head as I placed a charm on the needles to prevent me making too many mistakes whilst working fast. I watched closely as my fingers seemed to move of their own accord, forming a small tiny sock, with in the palm of my hand.     The sheer tininess of it made me realise how small this baby was actually going to be, how she was going to have to depend on me for everything.

…Lorelie, Roxanne, Molly, Libby, Abigail, Sami…

My wand severed the thread as soon as the sock was complete, but immediately started to make another, completing the pair. They were both just so perfect as I laid the second one on my bump. I had a whole host of them all upstairs and as much as I tried to alternate the colour of the wool, I couldn’t help myself always favouring the pink. I’d always been such a girly girl.

… Nicola, Lara, Rosie, Amber, Heidi, Lexie…

My heart jolted as I heard the door creek open. Looking at the door I spotted the electric blue hair of my husband. I allowed myself to flop back into the chair, letting the needles take over again continuing to knit now what looked to be a cardigan. I loved the cuteness of all the clothes I’d made.

‘Vic?’

… Imogen, Niamh, Renee, Kellie, Joelle, Carmen…

‘In here’ I replied not looking up. He came towards me pulling my chin closer to my mouth kissing me softly  on my lips. I could taste the chicken he’d had for his lunch on his lips, my body instantly craved it as my stomach rumbled again from the lack of food. Teddy gave a tinkling laugh as I tried to pull my arms around him but not quite being able to reach around him.

… Loretta, Calleigh, Ophelia, Gracie, Jaynie, Darcy…

‘Oi’ I say jokingly swotting him round the head with my hand as he lifted me up off of the sofa. Trying to keep my balance , I wobbled as he started to dance around the living room with me. He did this quite often when he was in a good mood and I knew this morning he was asking about having paternity leave when the baby was born. I gave a little giggle because I knew that he’d got iT.

… Maria, Faye, Kylie, Becca, Imogen, Etta…

‘I love you’ I whispered to him as I nestled my head underneath his neck. I felt completely safe with him. Placing me back down into the spot on the sofa, he sat down next to me, placing his hand on the huge bump which had stopped all hugs between us for the last merlin knows how many months. He placed his head next to my stomach, before talking to it as he had done every day for the past two weeks.

‘Hey baby girl. I hope you’ve been good for your mommy today, not giving her too much trouble about your name’

… Rochelle, Sasha, Madeline, Amelia, Jessie, Jade…

He sat there pondering as he waited for the baby to kick as her usual response to being talked to.

‘Hmmm okay, how about Kacie?’ He waited looking up at me. I shook my head prompting him to try again.

‘Nyla?’ Still nothing ‘Violet?’I shook my head again. He looked bemused about the fact the baby still didn’t want to respond.

…Angelie, Teagan, Josie, Bonnie, Ella, Payton…

‘Lizzy?’ He looked more hopeful. Still nothing.

‘Urgh, going to be awkward like your mom? Okay how about Alicia?’ I jolted as I felt a tiny little flutter with in my stomach. Teddy looked at my hand like it was an almost alien thing letting me know that he’d felt it too. His grin became wide like a chesire cat and in that moment we knew the name of our daughter.

‘Alicia?’ he said

‘Alicia’ I agreed with the baby happily kicking away letting us know we’d made the right choice.
