Ginny looked up at Harry when he asked ‘what happened’, and saw him hang up the phone, and he just stared at the floor. Ginny got scared and ran to him.
“Harry, what is going on?” She said and he looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“Aly is in the hospital.”
“What?” Ginny asked her voice cracking. “What happened?”
“She stopped breathing.”
“Just like that?” Ginny asked angrily.
“I don’t know. I am going to the hospital.” He said and kissed her.
“I am too. I’ll be there soon.” She said and he apparated, and Ginny sent a quick message with her patronus to her mother. A minute later, Molly was there and Ginny went to the hospital, and felt her heart break. She saw Draco holding a sobbing Hermione.
“Draco, what happened?” Harry asked and Draco looked at him.
“I called Hermione to remind her about a meeting that we were having tomorrow. Everything was fine, and then Aly screamed, and Hermione, I assume, ran to her, and let me in because I apparated there, and we went into her bedroom to see her on the floor, and she wasn’t breathing.” He explained and Harry looked at Ginny, before turning back to Draco.
“Where did they take her?” He asked.
“There.” Draco said and pointed to a door. Harry went to it, and walked in. He was, after all, the Head of the Auror Department. Ginny knelt down to Hermione.
“Mione?” She said and Hermione tried to breathe regularly. She looked up at Ginny, and Ginny wanted to cry.
“I don’t know what happened. Just fifteen minutes ago, she was smiling at me, showing me a spell she had learned. Why did this happen to my baby?” She said and Ginny hugged her.
“I don’t know honey, but we are going to figure it out.” She said and Hermione nodded, and cried. Soon, they got Hermione to move to a chair, but she wouldn’t let go of Draco, for no reason. He held her nonetheless, and Ginny sat beside them. After another twenty minutes, Harry walked out, anger very evident on his face. Ginny saw him first and ran to him. “What is it?”
“She was cursed.” Harry said and Ginny gasped.
“What do you mean? With what?”
“They don’t know, they haven’t seen this before. She was cursed, with a poison. The poison is bad enough, but someone cursing it to do their bidding. Who does that?” He said and Ginny gave him a look. “Okay, but he’s dead Ginny.” He said and she shrugged.
“Harry?” A weak voice came from behind them, and they turned to see Hermione. Her face was dry, and she had stopped crying. Her eyes were red, and she looked like she got hit with a metaphorical wrecking ball. “What’s wrong with my baby girl?”She asked and Harry sighed.
“Come, sit down.” He said and Hermione followed. “Mione, Alexz was poisoned.” He said and Hermione nodded.
“Magical poison.” He said and she looked at him.
“You mean to tell me that some monster gave my daughter something that she consumed, and let the poison spread in her body, and then were able to control it as they wished?” She asked angrily, and a tear slid down hers and Harry’s cheek.
“Yes.” He croaked out, and Hermione shut her eyes.
“Who would do this to my daughter? She doesn’t know anyone, and no one knows her. We haven’t even been here a week.” She said, and Draco hugged her.
“Mione.” Harry said and she looked at him. “The poison is in Aly’s blood.” He said and she gasped. “Whoever did this meant it. And the doctors don’t know what to do to help her. They have her on monitors and there will be someone with her at all times.” He said and she cried harder. Draco pulled out his cell phone, and dialed. “Who are you calling mate?” Harry asked.
“Yes, hello, this is Draco Malfoy, I want to speak with Dr. Evans, and it’s an emergency.” He said and looked at Harry. “Yes, Josh, it’s Draco. I’m not too good, listen I have an emergency.” He began. “I have a girl here who was poisoned with a bad magical poison, and I am asking you to help. You are the best.” He said and waited a minute. “Okay.” He said. “They have her monitored and there is someone with her.” He went quiet. “Really? You think so?” He said and Hermione’s head shot up. “Okay, I will. Thank you. See you tomorrow.” He said and got off the phone.
“Who was that?” Ginny asked.
“That was my friend Josh. He studied medicine, and has studied magical and muggle poisons, for almost three years. He will be here tomorrow to look at Aly.” He said and Hermione’s arms went around his neck.
“You didn’t have to, but thank you so much.” She mumbled and he held her tight.
“Of course I did.” He whispered into her hair.
“What did he think?” Harry asked and Draco looked at him.
“He said that whoever did this meant it for a reason. He says that Aly should have authority in her room at all times, because the person might try to finish it. True, it is controlled by magic, but they would need to be by her to… kill her.” He said, and felt Hermione’s body freeze.
“I’ll be right back.” Harry said and apparated. A few minutes later, he was back with Luna. “Luna, go in that room, and don’t let anyone in without clearance.” He said and she nodded, and without questions, went to her job. Harry looked over at Hermione, and wanted to punch someone in the face.
“Harry?” He heard and looked over to Ginny. “Why did this happen?”
“I don’t know Gin, but when I figure it out, I am going to make sure that whoever did this pays.”
“Poor Hermione, I can’t even imagine how she feels right now.” Ginny said and Harry nodded.
“Come on, let’s go and get them some coffee.” He said and wrapped his arm around his wife, and they walked away, leaving Draco and Hermione alone. After a minute, Hermione sat up and wiped her face.
“Are you okay?” Draco asked and she looked at him.
“No, I don’t know when I will be okay. I can’t believe that this happened. I mean, I just don’t understand how it could have. I should have seen that something was wrong.” She said, and he pulled her to him, and kissed her. When they pulled away, she looked at him confused.
“You couldn’t know. No one could have known.” He said, and could see the tears forming in her eyes again. “Come here baby.” He whispered and she leaned into him, and silently cried. “We are going to get this figured out. I promise, we will.” He said, and rubbed her back. After a few minutes, Harry and Ginny came back with four coffees.
“She’s asleep.” Ginny said and Draco looked down to see that Hermione did fall asleep. “She wouldn’t want to be asleep.” Ginny said and set down two of the coffees.
“Let her sleep for a while, just a few hours.” Draco said and looked at his watch. “It’s almost 10. Wake her up around one or two am.” He said and moved Hermione so that she could lie down.
“Where are you going?” Harry asked.
“I’m going to go and get a few things. I’ll be back in about an hour or so. If anything happens, call me.” He said and Harry nodded.
“Wait, you’re just going to leave?” Ginny snapped, and Draco looked at her.
“I’m coming back, I swear.” He said, and apparated.
“His own daughter - -“ Ginny began to rant but Harry stopped her.
“That he doesn’t know is his, Gin.” He said and Ginny froze.
“I forgot.” She said and Harry sighed.
Draco first apparated to Hermione’s house, to get Hermione a few things for when she woke up. Just then he smelt something and ran to the kitchen. He pointed his wand to the oven and water rushed out of his wand. Hermione must have been making dinner and forgot all about it. He turned off her oven and opened it, and sprayed it with water, and coughed at all the steam that was coming out. A few minutes later, the air cleared, he took a look at the scene. Whatever she was making was burned to a crisp, but luckily her oven was fine, so was everything else. He sighed, and levitated the dish out of the stove, and placed it in the sink, and poured water on it. He then looked around the house and got things that he thought Hermione would need. As he walked around he saw pictures of Alexz everywhere. It was like he was watching her grow up in the pictures. They there were some of Alexz and Hermione, and some with Hermione and friends. He went into Alexz room, and picked up a few things to take back, including her favorite Winnie the Pooh bear, though he didn’t know it was her favorite, and a blanket. He then went into another room that was obviously Hermione’s and looked.
“I don’t believe it.” He said as he turned to see a picture of him and Hermione together. He smiled at the memory, and then went on to get Hermione a change of clothes, and a few personal things. He looked at Hermione’s bedside table to see a picture of Alexz that struck him in the stomach. He stared for a moment, and then realized why it seemed familiar. Alexz looked so much like his mother when she was younger. As Draco stared at the picture, he kept getting a nagging feeling that something was missing, that he was missing something. He stared more, and then his brain kicked in and he started thinking. He grabbed the picture, and then he apparated out of Hermione’s house, and to his own. He ran to his room and grabbed one of the books his mother gave him and started flipping. Page after page, he couldn’t find it. After looking for a few more minutes, he found it, and took it out. He grabbed the one he took from Hermione's and put them side by side, and studied them. She would have told him, wouldn’t she? He put them down and changed his clothes, before grabbing everything and going to his mothers.
“Draco, what are you doing here? It’s getting late.” Narcissa said and Draco looked at her, studying her face.
“Mother, look at this.” He handed her a familiar picture.
“Yes, it’s me when I was little.”
“How old were you?” He said and she thought for a moment.
“I think I was maybe four or five. Why?” She asked, and he handed her another picture, and even she had to take a second look. “Who is this?”
“This is Alexz, Hermione’s daughter. She was magically poisoned and I thought that Hermione would like a few things from home, so I went and got some things, and I saw that. I went home and found yours, and they are very much alike.” He said and she looked at the pictures again.
“What are you saying dear?” She said, and looked at him.
“I am saying that I think that Alexz is my daughter.”
