Chapter 2: My Attraction To Being Picked Up
I jumped out of my bed and smacked my head against my bedpost in the process.
“FUCK!” I rubbed my head furiously, my eyes stinging.
“You are just so pleasant in the morning.” Lily walked out of the bathroom putting an earring in her left earlobe.
I stuck out my tongue at her (big habit of mine) and got up quickly, practically unfazed.
“Good morning my dear Lillian!” I hopped over to her and gave her a big one right on her cheek before running into the bathroom for a shower. I looked back quickly and Lils had a smile on her face, shaking her head.
After my beautiful, long shower (and Sue, our roommate, yelling at me to get out), I found myself munching down on beautiful, extraordinary waffles. No syrup incidents today, I think James took the extra precaution of sticking a bottle right beside Sirius, just in case.
I sit beside Sirius in potions, which isn’t the greatest idea because Sirius likes to distract people. It’s really bad when good old Sluggy decided it would be awesome to sit James and Remus right behind us. In front of us, Lily with a girl name Anne who was super quiet and kind of awkward.
Slughorn likes us. He likes us the most out of everyone in the class, other than Snivellus. For this, we have a respect for him because he finds us “charming and very clever”. Remus always snorts at this, but I think Sluggy has something going for him. Then again, Slughorn likes to “collect” people and Lily and I have caught his eye.
We’re both getting Outstanding in this class. James, Sirius and Remus are getting Exceeds Expectations, but it still isn’t an Outstanding. They don’t like to talk about it really (they’re kind of embarrassed), but Lils and I don’t brag anyways.
“Damn, I don’t have a quill.” Sirius said and then he got that look in his eye. He poked Anne on the shoulder gently and she turned around quickly, like she was startled.
“Hey Anne.” Sirius said. I rolled my eyes as Sirius brought on the smolder. That is so typical of him. He charms people into getting what he wants.
“H-hey.” She stuttered. Poor girl. She looked terrified but like she was going to faint from happiness at the same time.
“I was just wondering if you had a quill I could borrow. I seem to have misplaced mine. I’d really appreciate it.” God he is so smarmy.
“S-sure.” She handed the one in her hand to him. Was she serious?!
“Thanks a lot.” He gave her one last look and began writing. She turned around and I heard her release the breath she had been holding.
I smacked Sirius on the shoulder and he just smirked.
I watched Anne lean into Lily’s ear. “Lily, do you have a quill I could borrow?” She whispered.
We were all hanging out after lunch in the common room. We all had a break study period there. Lily was really the only one studying.
“OW!” I held the back of my head. I turned furiously to Sirius beside me, who had a cheeky grin on his face. “What the bloody hell was that for?!”
“Your hair looked really bouncy, so I decided to pull one and see!” His grin widened. “They are so springy!” He reached over again and I flinched back.
“Not so hard!” I said, amused but annoyed at the pain in the back of my head.
Of course, by now, everyone was watching quietly, smirking, or laughing their heads off (this one is James). I biffed James over the head lightly. He pretended to be offended so he stuck his tongue out at me.
“Hey! That’s my thing!” I shouted. How dare he steal my tongue thing! I smacked him again and I guess it was a little too hard.
“That’s it!” James picked me up and threw me over his shoulder. Christ, I forgot how strong he was.
“JAMES! PUT ME DOWN!” I screamed.
He started to spin the stupid git. Oh man, I’m going to spew.
His shoulder dug into my stomach and I gasped as the familiar gut wrenching pain filled my torso.
“James, she’s turning a green colour.” Remus said for the corner.
James laughed manically.
“No seriously Prongs, she looks like she’s going to barf.” Sirius commented.
“DON’T THROW UP ON ME!” James yelled, and he dropped me quickly.
The world was spinning and when I tried to walk, I stumbled. Oh man. Shit, this is bad. I clapped my hand over my mouth.
“SHE’S GONNA BLOW!” Sirius yelled, what a git. I’m going to kill-
I ran to the potted plant in the corner and spewed. Wow, that’s attractive.
“I am so sorry Tree!” James rushed over to rub my back, like he knew my mom used to do.
“It’s cool, don’t worry about it.” I said, wiping my mouth. I smiled at him. “Let me just go brush my teeth.” I laughed.
He patted me on the back while the others laughed and I went upstairs. When I got there, I flopped down on my bed and let the tears slowly seep out the corner of my eyes. The tears left a trail that fell down my cheeks and my neck into my curly blonde hair. Exactly like my mom’s hair. My mom.
I got up and brushed the tears away. I walked slowly into the bathroom, grabbed my toothbrush and brushed my teeth, trying to forget.
Because it was still September, it was still warm out, which meant that we could still hang out under the tree by the lake without freezing our asses off. That’s where you could find us, most warm days and that’s where we were a couple days after I threw up.
Sirius and James were talking about which teams were likely to face each other in the first rounds of Quidditch. Lily and Peter were talking about their parents’ plans for Christmas. Remus was reading beside me, and I was just looking out at the lake, trying to block Lily and Peter’s conversation from my mind. I felt someone’s eyes on me and I turned to see Remus with a thoughtful look on his face.
“What?” I teased with a grin.
“You have this tightness around your eyes. You get it when you’re sad.” He said.
I was shocked, and my hand quickly went to my eyes. I smiled and decided to brush it off.
“I think you’ve been reading too long Remus, you’re losing your mind.”
He gave me a skeptical look and began to talk when James and Sirius decided it would be cool to pick me up.
“Do you always have to pick me up?!” I shouted.
They both laughed, and then I realized where we were headed.
“OH NO YOU DON’T! PUT ME DOWN THIS INSTANT!” I squirmed and their grips tightened.“JAMES! NO- DON’T-!”
They heaved their arms forward and let me go, and I went soaring into the lake. I landed winced under water as my spine hit the shallow bottom. I thought about how tranquil it was under here, and how the water was actually nice compared to the heat outside. I stood up quickly and sputtered.
They looked at me with big grins on their faces and I quickly started splashing them. They yelled out and then quickly ran in towards me, splashing along as they went. Sirius tackled me and we went down, laughing. Eventually, Lily ran in, and then Peter, and then Remus. As we all laughed and screamed, as Lily was thrown into the water by James and Sirius splashed Peter I couldn’t help but hope that I would never forget this moment.
