Chapter 6: Falling
“Ginny, what do I do? He is asking questions, and I am running out of things to say, and god, his smile. I swear to god I thought that I was going to throw up.” Hermione said as she paced Ginny’s living room.
“Ew.” Ginny said and Hermione laughed.
“Not like literally. My stomach kept doing that thing where I was so, uhg, and he was smiling, and it felt like butterflies. Ginny, what the hell am I doing?” She said before her body fell into the couch beside her friend.
“Well, it sounds to me like you are falling for Draco Malfoy, all over again.” Ginny said and Hermione looked at her.
“Well, I can’t be.” She said flatly.
“I can’t, because he is my boss. I mean, how weird would that look?” Hermione said and Ginny shrugged.
“So? Who cares what people think? Hermione, you loved him more than you have ever loved anyone, including Harry. Did you know that he looked for you after you left? That he felt so bad that he didn’t sleep for almost a week. He didn’t eat, didn’t leave his house. He just stopped. Harry finally got to him, and helped him. And now look at him, he is just like the Draco we all knew and cared about, and so much more.” Ginny said and Hermione looked at her. “He still loves you, trust me. Just let it go and see what happens.” She explained and Hermione nodded.
“And what do I say about Aly?” She asked and Ginny shrugged.
“I don’t know. I have never been in this situation before. All I can say is, is that when the time is right, tell him.” She said and Hermione sighed. Ginny was right, like usual.
“Hey mom.” Draco said and Narcissa turned to him.
“Oh, Draco, it is so good to see you.” She said and got up from her seat to hug him. “How are you?” She asked before they pulled away. He smiled at his mother. She looked nice with short blonde hair. His father always made her have it long. Her eyes seemed to sparkle like a pool on a warm day. She was still beautiful for a woman who was forty three.
“I am doing okay. I found a secretary.” He said and sat down across from his mother.
“Well that’s good.” She said before sipping some tea.
“Yeah, it’s Hermione Granger.” He said and Narcissa coughed on her tea a little.
“Hermione is back?” She asked and he smiled.
“Yes she is.”
“So, what are you going to do?” She asked and he looked at her.
“There’s nothing I can do.”
“Why, is she married?”
“Then I am not seeing a problem.” She said and he smirked her.
“She has a daughter. Her name is Alexz, or Aly for short. She has dirty blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and a smile just like Hermione’s. I haven’t seen her yet, just pictures. Hermione said that the father isn’t involved.” He said, but his mother was only partially listening, and her brain was running a mile a minute.
“That’s a shame.” She said and looked at Draco. “So, why aren’t you going to try to get her back?” She asked with a smile.
“Mother, I don’t even know how she feels, and I don’t want to disrupt her small family.” He said and she smiled at him.
“Oh Draco, just talk to her. I am sure that she is having a fit over what is going on, just like you.” She said as she picked up a large book.
“What’s that?” He asked and she smiled at him.
“A photo album. I have been flipping through a few lately.” She said and he nodded. “There are some of you if you want to take them home to look at.” She said and he looked at her.
“You know, that sounds good. I need some pictures at home, maybe I will find a few that I can duplicate and hang up.” He said and his mother smiled.
“I’ll be right back.” She said as she stood up and walked to a different room. She entered the room and walked to a small stack of thick books. She picked up one and flipped through it. With Draco’s words floating in her mind, she saw the picture and smiled. She took that book and another book with her to give to him. One book was of her and her family, including a few of Draco, and the other was basically Draco over the years, including a few pictures of him and Hermione. She walked back to the living room and to see him on his cell phone.
“Yes sir, she is doing just fine. Yes, of course I am. I understand that.” Draco said, and would sometimes laugh. He looked up and saw his mother and smiled. “I understand, yes. I have to go, my mother just came in. Yes, I will say hello for you. Okay, I will talk to you soon. Goodbye.” He hung up and smiled. “Mr. Hamilton says hello.” He said and she smiled.
“Why were you talking to him?”
“Well, Hermione was his secretary for four years, and he was just calling to see how she was doing.” He said and she nodded.
“Well, here are two books. I hope that you can find a few of them useful.” She said with a twinkle in her eye. He smiled at her and took the books.
“Thanks mom, but I have to go. I have to prepare for a meeting that I have to present tomorrow. I’ll get these back to you whenever I can.” He said and she smiled.
“No rush dear.” She said and kissed him on the cheek.
“Love you mom.”
“Love you too.” She said and smiled as he left. ‘Oh Draco, if only you knew’, she thought to herself.
“Mommy, can we have lasagna tonight for dinner?” Aly asked.
“Sure. Well we are home now, tell me what you learned today?” Hermione asked and Aly smiled.
“May I borrow your wand?” Aly asked and Hermione handed it to her. Aly smiled and gripped the wand with a strong, yet simple grasp. “She taught us how to properly hold a wand.” Aly said and Hermione smiled. Aly then looked at a flower that she had picked for her mother, and saw that the glass it was in, was chipped at the top. Aly walked to it, and pointed the wand. “Repairo.” She said, and the glass fixed itself. Aly turned to Hermione and saw her mother smiling ear to ear.
“Oh, honey that is great. Soon you will be a pro, and then you will get into Hogwarts.” She said and Aly smiled.
“Well, we are only going to practice one a month, and I got it the first try, the other kids didn’t. But we are mostly learning the history.” Aly said and Hermione smiled.
“I am so proud of you. You are four going on thirteen, you are so smart.” Hermione said and Aly laughed, before yawning. Hermione smiled. “Go and clean up, and I will get dinner started.” She said and Aly did as she was told. Hermione went to the kitchen and started to get the food going. After a few minutes, she went and changed into some comfortable clothes. She went and checked on Aly, who had fallen asleep. She smiled and went to the kitchen and finished getting the lasagna together, and then she put it in the oven, and went to the living room. As soon as she sat down, her cell phone rang. “Hello?” She answered.
“Hey Mione.” Draco said.
“Hey Draco, what’s up?”
“I just wanted to call and remind you that we have that meeting tomorrow at ten.” He said.
“Right, I remember. Do you need me to bring anything?” She asked.
“Can you make sure that someone in the office brings all the guys at the meeting a coffee, and could you maybe pick up some sort of breakfast food? Like bagels or muffins.” He said and she smiled.
“Of course I can.” She said and he sighed.
“No problem, it’s my job remember.” She said and laughed. “Honestly, its no problem, I am more than happy to do it.” Just then she heard a scream, and he heard it too.
“What was that?” He asked, but Hermione was running.
“Aly?” She called out before she got to Aly’s door, to see Aly on the floor, passed out. Just then Hermione heard a pop and someone knocking on her door.
“Hermione? It’s me.” She heard Draco and opened the door, and he followed her as she ran to Aly’s room. She fell to the floor and pulled Aly to her.
“Aly? Aly baby, can you hear me?” She said and tapped Aly’s face. Draco knelt down and felt Aly’s neck.
“She’s not breathing.” He said and Hermione hugged Aly tight, and Draco grabbed her, apparating them to St. Mongu’s. Draco quickly pulled Hermione along.
“What happened?” A doctor asked.
“She screamed, and now she isn’t breathing. She was just sleeping.” Hermione said and the doctor took Aly and put her on a gurney. Hermione watched as they took her daughter into a secluded room, and told her she couldn’t come in. Hermione stood there like a statue, not knowing what to do. Draco saw her sway a little and wrapped his arm around her waist, and quickly grabbed her as he felt her falling to the floor. She cried, and Draco held her tight while she sobbed.
“Shh, it’s okay. Shh, it’s going to be alright. It's okay baby, we will get through this.” He said to her and she cried harder. Draco then grabbed his cell and dialed.
“Hey mate, what’s up?”
“Hermione and I are at the hospital.”
“What? What happened?”
“It’s Aly. She isn’t breathing.” He said and the phone line went dead.
