Chapter 4: chapter four
[View Online]

Here is chapter 4! I hope you all enjoy it!

Usually the guy is the one waiting for the girl, but of course with me I’m the one waiting for him to finish getting ready. Cormac is still up in the boy’s dormitory getting ready for Slughorn’s party, even though we had agreed to meet down in the common room over fifteen minutes ago. Honestly, how long could it take a guy to get ready?

I decided to go sit on the couch in front of the fireplace while I waited for him, not sure how much longer it would take him to get ready. Watching the fire, watching the flames dancing across the logs and listening to them crackle as the flames consumed them was really relaxing for me, I could feel my annoyance slipping away. I watched as couples made their way out of the common room, some dressed up for the party and others just to go out, as I sat there on the overstuffed couch. At one point in time I could have sworn that I saw Neville all dressed up on his way out of the common room as well though I could have been mistaken. Finally, from behind me I heard someone clear their throat. Cormac was standing there giving me his overly confident smile.

“Hello Hermione, are you ready for our date?” Cormac asked me.

“I’m ready, or as ready as I’ll ever be.” I said the second part under my breath so he couldn’t hear it.

Cormac came around the couch to stand right in front of me and held out his hand waiting for me to take it. Instead of taking his hand, like I knew he expected me to do, I slipped past him and made my way towards the door knowing that he would follow me. I could hear him whisper ‘you little minx’ which only made me groan, this was going to be a long night.

We made it down to Slughorn’s office just after the party was set to start. I stopped in the entry way taking in the detail around me. There must have been a lot of thought put into the decorations because everything just seemed to fit into place from the curtains down to the last mistletoe, though the mistletoe did make me rather nervous. I wouldn’t put it past Cormac to try something tonight and that would be the easiest way to do it - they keep a person trapped underneath until they receive a kiss. Cormac placed his hand on the small of my back trying to lead me into the room since I was still standing in the entry way.

Slughorn was off to the side of the room conversing with Michael Corner, looking rather disinterested in the conversation, when he caught sight of me. I could hear him make his excuses to Michael as he started edging his way over to where Cormac and I stood. He must have thought that we would be better company, though I think I would much rather be with Michael Corner then Cormac.

“Ah, Miss Granger, Mr. McLaggen, glad to see that you could both make it to the party. What do you think of it?” He asked us both, gesturing to the whole office.

“It’s wonderful, Professor. I must say, you did a really great job with the decorations.” I told him as I gazed around the room once more.

“Well thank you Miss Granger, but actually, I uh...I had the house elves do the work.” He said, his cheeks tinged with a light blush at my praise.

At that moment I was unsure of what to say. Now that I knew the house elves had been the ones to decorate the whole room it had less of an appeal to me. Of course I couldn’t exactly tell a Professor that, so I just smiled at him, figuring that no response would be best. Cormac seemed to relish in the attention he was getting from Slughorn so he began a conversation about his Uncle Tiberius. Slowly I backed away from the conversation, hoping that Cormac wouldn’t see me, until I backed right into someone.

“I’m so sorry, I really should have been paying attention behind me, but I was just,” I paused as I looked up into the face of the person I bumped into, “distracted.” I finished.

“No harm was done.” The person responded to me and then walked away.

I chanced a glance over to Cormac to find he was still deep in conversation with Slughorn, so I quickly made my way over to the punch bowl. As I poured myself a glass I thought about the guy I had bumped into; he was a Slytherin, I could tell that he was from the green tie that he had around his neck. Thinking back to classes that I had with the Slytherins I recalled him answering to the name Theodore Nott, he never really talked much in class and seemed to keep more to himself.

“There you are, I wondered where you had gone off to.” Cormac said as he stepped in place next to me.

“I was feeling rather parched and didn’t want to interrupt your conversation with Slughorn.” I told him.

He grabbed a hold of my arm and wrapped it around his own as he started walking away, pulling me along. I felt as if I was some prized possession being shown off as he slowly strolled around the room aimlessly, or at least that's what I thought until I saw some mistletoe hanging from the ceiling not far away and in the direction we were headed. My mind was working overtime trying to figure a way out of this dilemma; if he got me under the mistletoe I would be stuck in that spot until I was kissed and that was not in my plans for the evening. I tried to pull my arm away from his but he has a pretty tight grip on it and I began to fret even more.

There was no way I was going to let Cormac kiss me; I just couldn't let it happen. I mean its one thing to go to the party with him to get Ron jealous, but if Ron ever found out that Cormac kissed me, it would completely ruin things. His hold on my arm loosened slightly as we a few feet from my impending doom so I took the chance and pulled as hard as I could away from him, finally my arm was free from him. Calmly I walked away from where we had been standing; trying to get to some place safer that didn’t have any mistletoe. I quick look behind me to see if Cormac is following me, only to not spot him at all. I turn around, confused, I was sure that he would follow me. After a few moments of scanning the room I found him back over in the same exact spot that I left him in, only to realize that when I pushed away from him I must have pushed him under a sprig of mistletoe, so now he could not leave his spot until he received a kiss. Too bad it wouldn’t be from me.

I felt slightly bad that I just left him there but I knew that this would probably be my only chance of escape. Quickly I walk towards the curtained area around one of the windows in the room, figuring that Cormac would be too thick to think of looking for me back here. A figure slowly came closer to my current hiding place and I began to get nervous that Cormac had gotten away from the mistletoe in time to see me come back here. The figure pushed back the curtain only to reveal Harry. I couldn’t believe how happy I was to see him here.

“Hermione, what are you doing?” Harry asked me, taking in my frantic look.

“I’ve just escaped; I mean I’ve just left Cormac over there.” I said pointing in the direction that I had left him. (*)

He gave me a sort of quizzical look at my slip up about escaping Cormac but doesn’t say anything about it. Peaking around the curtain, I saw Cormac headed in the direction of where I was hiding. I quickly let the curtain slide close hoping he didn’t see me, but as I watched his shadow through the curtain I was sure that he had as he was still coming in this direction. The only way for me to slip out once more was for me to wait until he gets here and hope that he doesn’t catch me when I leave. I sent Harry a pleading look to not tell Cormac anything, and then I slipped out one side of the curtain as Cormac slips in the other. I hear him mutter to Harry asking where I had gone but I was too far away to hear Harry’s response.

I glanced over my shoulder to see if Cormac has left from behind the curtain yet, only to run right into someone but when I looked up to see who I ran into nobody was in front of me. Confused I look around and found Malfoy staring right back at me as he was being dragged away by Filtch headed in the direction of Slughorn. I paused in my tracks waiting to see what was going to happen only to hear Filtch complain about students being out of bed after hours and that Malfoy claimed he was on his way to Slughorn’s party.

“Alright, so I was going to crash the party.” Malfoy’s outburst made a few heads turn around him. “What are you looking at, Mudblood?” he shot at me when he looked back in my direction and found that I was still staring at him.

I turned away from him sharply and decided to leave the party early without my date. When I got out of the room I dropped down to the floor and leaned my back against the wall by the door. This whole thing was such a disaster.

‘How did it get so out of control?’ I thought to myself.

As I sat there on the floor I thought about how disappointed I was in myself. I had never been this girl who would play on jealousy to get a guy, nor would I ever give someone false hopes if I wasn’t honestly interested in them. I banged my head against the wall, a litter harder then I meant to, out of frustration at myself. The door to the party banged open beside me revealing Professor Snape dragging Malfoy back towards the Slytherin common room. A minute later the door opened again only to reveal no one. I instantly knew who it was and what they were going to do.

“Harry, stop this!” I called out to him.

“I know Malfoy’s up to something Hermione; I can’t just let him get away.” He called back to me.

I watched him go, knowing that there was nothing I could do to stop him and if I followed him, I would only get him revealed and then everyone would know that he has an invisibility cloak. Yawning, I decided it was time for me to head back to the common room and go to bed.
