Chapter 8: Doing All That I Can
[View Online]

It could have been weeks, it could have been days or even hours. Hermione had lost all sense of time. She couldn’t move she just lay there; her tears had stopped flowing a long time ago. She remembered all the good times and prayed that Harry would defeat Voldemort. It couldn’t be over could it? Hermione then attempted to shake her head to get the thought out, this caused more pain making her cry out. A fresh wave of tears flooded down her cheeks.

“I thought you’d finished crying?” Draco’s cold voice rang through the darkness, it was filled with guilt. “Lumos” a bright light filled the small cell and Hermione could see Draco’s face.   His eyes were sunken below dark circles and the cold grey glistened in the light. Slowly Draco kneeled down, “do you mind?” Hermione shook her head unsure of what he was going to do. He waved his wand slowly above her body and warmth spread through it reducing the pain enough so she could sit up and face him properly. Hermione wiped her tear streaked face and attempted a smile.

“Why are you doing this for me Draco?...you hate me.” Draco smiled weakly, but with great pain and anguish in his eyes.

“Hermione, I am a prisoner here. They control me, I didn’t choose this, it was who I was born to be. I’m a Malfoy, wickedness runs in our blood. At first I was into it, I really thought I was helping. The Dark Lord believes everything I was brought up to believe, I never understood anything else. I was stupid. When I started breaking free they’d torture me, it was easier just to conform” Something shined in Draco’s eye, tears brimming at his eyes. He coughed and continued Hermione was surprised and flattered by his bitter yet beautiful honesty. “I slowly began to resent everyone here, but I have to prove myself, I’ll only ever be a worthless Malfoy, servant to the dark lord and damn it I’m going to do it right.” The pride radiated off him, he truly wanted to make something of himself.

“Draco, have you ever thought that you could do something different? You don’t have to keep following them.”

“Yes I do, it’s so much more complicated than you could ever understand. Even if you are the brightest witch in our year” Draco chuckled at that, Hermione thought he looked so much brighter when he smiled, the dark circles seems to disappear. “Are you going to be alright? I mean, Bellatrix wants to do another session.” Draco bit his lip looking guilt ridden, Hermione smiled weakly and nodded. Draco then rose to leave,

“Draco…thanks…for your honesty I mean” Hermione said nervously, Draco’s face cracked into an honest crooked smile and he left leaving Hermione in darkness all over again.

------------------------------------------------

“How do you feel?” Draco asked, after Hermione had been subjected to another 6 hours of torture.

“Numb”

 “Well...I guess that’s good”

“Hmm, I’d rather feel all the pain in the world than this numbness.” Draco looked at her questioningly, she sighed “I guess it’s more like if I can’t feel anything then I can’t feel anything” Draco raised his eyebrows at her, she laughed softly “I mean I can’t feel happy, or I can’t remember Harry and Ron and feel love for them because of this overwhelming numbness. It completely takes over, this heavy emptiness that just won’t let up”

“I think I know what you mean. But sometimes it’s good; the pain can be too much.” Draco said shortly.

“It can. But it reminds me I’m alive.” Hermione sighed deeply, as if breathing for the first time in a while. They sat in silence for a bit. He would always come in and chat to her now as soon as her session was over.

“Why do you put up with it Draco? I couldn’t do it”

"You’re not a Malfoy. Were despised, I know you hate me. I’m just doing what I was born to do. He’d kill me if I disobey”

“I don’t hate you” Hermione whispered.

“Really? I’ve been pretty horrible to you Hermione.”

“Everything you’ve done for me here makes up for it. You make this bearable.”

“I’m doing all that I can...”  He trailed off.

“I know you think it’s not enough, but” Hermione moved over so she was sitting next to him and turned his head to look at her. “It’s kept me fighting.” Draco then closed the space between them and their lips brushed very lightly. Hermione put her other hand in his hair and felt his grip her hips. Their kiss deepened but only for a second as Draco broke it off suddenly. He leant his head against the wall avoiding Hermione’s eyes.

“We can’t” His emphasis on can’t was painful. “It’s not right Hermione, you deserve someone perfect. You’re meant to be with Weasley. I’ll muck you up; evil and good can’t be together. It only happens in Shakespeare plays and stupid muggle novels when the bad guy can be changed.”

“I’m not asking you to change…you are good Draco. You deserve a good life, you deserve happiness.” Draco scoffed and smiled down at her. He noticed how beautiful she was and how delicate. He leaned down again and this time she met him halfway, he moved his arms around her stomach to her lower back and pulled her in so their bodies intertwined. Hermione held onto him for dear life, with him she felt something again, a vague hope. It was possible to feel happy just for a few seconds, when he was hers. In that moment two very unhappy people found happiness in each other’s pain.

Draco felt Hermione’s breathing grow slow and calm and he slowly lay her down and off his body. He looked down at her his heart hammering. He leaned down and stroked her hair out of her face.

“I promise Hermione, I’ll get you out of here. I’ll do all I can.”
