Chapter Eight: In restless dreams I walked alone

Chapter image by Jeanie, thank you.

“I'm not particularly concerned with whether or not you like me, because I live to like you and... and I can't like you anymore. So... so when you're feeling real low and... and dirty, and your heart is splattered all over hell, don't look to me to pump you back up 'cause... 'cause... 'cause maybe for the first time in your life I WON'T BE THERE!”
Duckie -- Pretty In Pink.

The moon finally settled in the night sky, it shone over Hogwarts. Dumbledore stirred his peppermint tea, as he looked out the window, listening to the life outside the walls. He unfortunately didn’t know of the poor sixteen year old lying on the cold cement of the Astronomy tower, a lonely man walking the dungeons and a werewolf howling with a broken heart. Taking a sip of tea, the ageing headmaster shut his curtain and went back to his desk, which was piled with books and papers, setting his tea aside, he started reading through his latest book.

Meanwhile, Gerard Hallow walked aimlessly around the castle. He couldn’t sleep, not now, he should have known that one day Rosemarie would be sick of him and yell at him and his overprotective ways. But she didn’t understand, he thought miserably. Hopefully the morning would show a clearer light.

Morning soon came and the full moon disappeared from the sky. Rosemarie sat up, wrapping the blanket around her cold shoulders, she walked slowly through the corridors. She walked as though she was in some sort of daze, she hoped that last night was just some bad dream, a nightmare. The corridors were cold and light blasted through the windows. Unfortunately for Rosemarie, it was breakfast time, so the usual morning rush flowed through the halls. Each person turning around and staring, as she walked blindly through them, her whole body was shaking and the blanket kept slipping from her arms. Her long white blonde hair was messy, and her face pale. She walked amidst the staring faces into the Great hall, she sat down at her usual spot on the raven claw table far away from everyone, she didn’t eat because she wasn’t hungry. Her eyes were red, but not from crying, from something else.

Suddenly over the great hall Rosemarie noticed were her drawings, one was just above her head, she reached up and touched it but it caught fire and went to ash. The hall erupted with laughed as every student’s eyes were on her, Dumbledore looked up from his conversation with Minerva about green tea leaves, when he noticed Rosemarie. He watched as she reached to grab more of her drawings, but each one caught fire and ash circled the ground around her. He searched the Slytherin table looking for Gerard to take her out of the hall but he wasn’t there. Even louder the students seemed to be laughing, echoing around the hall, Remus laughed the hardest.
“SILENCE!” yelled Dumbledore angrily, “Mr Lupin, Mr Black, Mr Pettigrew, and Mr Potter up to my office NOW!”

The four students stood up and followed Dumbledore to his office. Rosemarie walked behind them until she reached the staircase, she did not look up, staring at the floor all the time as she moved one step at a time. As soon as she was through the portrait hole, she ran up into her dorm room, as the door slammed to a close, the tears began to flow down her cheeks. She could not believe she had been so foolish to think they wanted to be her friends. Gerry had been right all along and now she was alone again, for some reason this thought made her angry. Her feet treaded lightly on the wooden floorboards as she searched her trunk, until she could feel, the piece of paper. Quickly she pulled it out and looked into his eyes.

Gerard had circled the lake ten times already. He was running out of solutions of ways to apologise to Rosemarie. She had to know he never meant any of the rotten things he had said to her yesterday, he lived to be around her, and without her he had nothing. The wind blew over Hogwarts, causing the trees to sway and whisper to each other. Usually Rosemarie loved listening to the trees on a windy day, but not today not now.

~* 3 days later *~
“She’s gone, Gerard.” Dumbledore spoke calmly watching his reaction.

In this moment it seemed as though time stood still as though, they were no longer in the security of the headmasters office. Gerry could see her running down London streets, her face pale and hair on all ends, a mad expression on her face. For Gerry this was the most troubling thing in the world. He had caused this it was his fault that Rosemarie had ran away. He had no idea where she would go, even where she lived he had no clue.

“Gerard?”
“Yes, Professor?” He responded a serious tone to his voice as he allowed worry to flow through his veins.
“Do you know where she would go from here? Any place she loved more than anything?” Dumbledore asked moving closer to Gerry.

Suddenly everything clicked in Gerry’s mind; ‘the dream’ he had had, it all made sense now. In a flash he was out of Dumbledore’s office, he sprinted across the grounds. His feet barely touching the hard ground of the forbidden forest. Finally he reached the exact spot that only three days age they had sat and eaten a picnic.

As he walked into the clearing he could see her blonde hair, the red blanket wrapped over her body, her eyes closed with tears spilling over her cheeks. A large charcoal circle was around her body, and a scrunched up into a tiny ball was a piece of paper, as he moved closer he recognised a drawing, an eye emerging from the corner of the page. The eye looked remarkably familiar; his own eye staring back at him.

“Rosemarie?” he whispered softly as the wind blew strongly it carried his voice to her, repeating her name again and again until finally, she looked up.

“Leave me alone, Hallow!” She yelled, but her eyes couldn’t focus on him, she seemed different to him he had never seen this side of her before. He moved closer until he could rest the palm of his hands on either side of her face, making her look into his eyes.

“Please Rose, come back with me. Dumbledore is worried about you and so am I. I never meant those horrible things I said to you the other night, I still love you. You mean the world to me, Rose.” He pleaded, his eyes begging her to take him back, to forgive him.

“But you were right Gerry. Remus wasn’t my friend, he just wanted to play a prank on me. And I am really mad, I mean you wouldn’t have said it if it weren’t true; my parents are mad so its not long before I turn mad too. All my drawings are gone, burned to ash. So thank you Gerry for being so right all the time.” She said the last part with a touch of sarcasm in her voice, she pulled his hands away from her face and stood up and began to walk away.

“Rose, you are not mad!” Gerry said running and standing in front of her blocking her from moving any further.
